This game is special. Please do yourself a favour and try it. I promise you, that if you like Survival-craft games in the slightest, you will most likely enjoy this. The reason I am so sure is becuase this is the game that got me into the genre in the first place. 5/5
This game is only getting a 1.0 launch because it was about to get a warning plastered on the store page by Steam about how long it’s been in early access. No official mod support after 5 and half years. No steam workshop. They will not say how long they will support the game after the 1.0 release. The dev’s don’t even want to continue the Build of the Month after the 1.0 release. I think that says it all about how they feel about the community. The game has changed a lot since I started playing in March 2021. I’m sure you can have fun in the game, I did and still do. I’d like the say ‘The Bee’s are Happy’, but yeah this is ‘not good.’
absolute unbalanced ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
ugh horrible grindy game with terrible combat. have fun pressing a button to mine ore VERY VERY slowly. I don't get it why people like these games, the game it self isn't fun, thats for sure
Valheim scratches the itch for a good Survival Crafting game that blends both a deep crafting/building system, as well as a decent combat and leveling system. I typically liken the combat to "Souls for babies" in that you shouldn't just spam mouse clicks to defeat enemies, yet you aren't horribly punished for doing so. Crafting runs deep with a lot of different components and materials that get unlocked by traveling to new biomes. Each "level" builds on the other after beating the boss in each biome, unlocking helpful character buffs that typically make life a little easier. Multiplayer is actually quite fun, though can be somewhat laggy at times depending on the number of players. Hordes and Boss battles could use a good rebalancing depending on the number of players though. With more updates on the horizon, I don't see myself getting bored with it anytime soon, and feel that it's well worth the money if you're into the Survival-Crafting genre and wish games like 7DTD and Minecraft had a little bit more of a fleshed out combat system.
it's a clunky, pretentious slog that has absolutely no respect for your time or the foundations of good game design that have come before it. The base building and terraforming is also clunky but at least provides some innovation. It's not a coincidence that barely any of the player base actually finishes the available content.
Disclaimer: This game rules and I support it and have played it since the beginning. I have purchased like 5 copies of this game for my friends so I'll say whatever I want about it. I have to say, I think $30 is asking too much for 1.0. And I'm pretty disappointed. I bought this game at $20 thinking there would be a lot more QoL polish and content. But in reality, it's a handful of biomes and bosses with a lot of grind between. If you like punishing deaths and QoL tuned down so much you will rip your hair out like I do - you can find plenty of hours in this game. The base building is janky enough to allow for some real creativity while also making some really bone-headed design choices and being supremely frustrating. I have lost 100s of iron scrap to the sea glitches, and seen tamed wolves murdered by two 1 star trolls with logs spawning right on top of each other. The kind of ♥♥♥♥ that instantly deletes hours of work and *shouldn't have happened* will happen to you in this game quite a lot. I love this game. But if you don't already love it, I gotta say your $30 should go to a different survival craft game. I don't think this one pays off as much as Enshrouded or Grounded or Dune Awakening. For a small shop that made a bajillion dollars off of this games randomly viral success, I would expect much much more. This thing is super rough for 1.0 and I think it will flop with the first-timers. As a software engineer of 20+ years, one has to wonder what they have done with all of their time and money. :<
I have tried and tried and tried to give this a chance but every step of the way it feels like the game is actively dissuading you from continuing. While some aspects of the game are best of the best, there are just too many things that actively harm the experience. To start off with the good: the building system is absolutely phenomenal. The restrictions on material force you to be creative and make more realistic buildings and areas instead of giant monoliths and floating platforms. The game really shines when you start to put your little village together, and with 1.0, there's so much variety and decoration you can do its amazing. If you look at this game purely as a budling game its nearing a 10/10. Unfortunately the game really doesn't allow you to thrive like that and the bad way outweigh the good. The game is just ALLERGIC to QOL. Everyone know how terrible the game used to be with being unable to teleport metals. My guess is this incentivizes you to either make a logistics network or separate mining bases. In practice its just annoying. With 1.0 you can disable this feature luckily. However storage is another issue as chests don't hold a lot and you need a lot of them. You also cant build or craft from chests so you need to have everything in your inventory. This is also a problem as you only have so many slots and can only carry so much. This compounds on the fact that there are no dedicated equipment slots so you have to have every piece of armor taking a precious inventory slot. Also your tools have durability but are free to repair (as long as you have the workbench) so its just another tedious thing to keep track of. I understand what they're going for but it is just not fun at all. You basically have to mod the game using a 3rd party website as there's no workshop. The game is also just basically a wiki game. If you dont know how or what to do, you have to look it up. Even if you fix all these QOL issues, there's fundamental flaws with the game. The biggest baldest issue is how just unforgiving the game is. Not how difficult it is, how unforgiving it is. When you die you lose all your buffs from food, rest, and awakened powers. You then have to sit there for nearly 10 SECONDS WHILE IT FADES TO BLACK. Then it has to load for a few more seconds, of course. Then you have to run to your corpse to pick up all your stuff. This is where the deathspiral begins. The enemies that killed you do not despawn. You lose some experience and have basically no stamina, and you regen is shot because even if you respawn in your bed you dont get the rested bonus. So now you have to run to corpse -> die -> run to corpse -> die over and over again until you finally get your stuff back. If you are in a mid-late stage area you will be one-shot so good luck :) This is just a fundamental flaw and honestly just kills any excitement I have while playing. TLDR: Building is amazing, but the game doesn't want you to play it. If you really want to play this game, you have to mod it into a tolerable state.
