Unsolved Case is a short but cleverly designed cooperative puzzle game that turns communication between two players into its most important mechanic. Developed and published by Eleven Puzzles, it serves as a free prequel to the Cryptic Killer series and introduces players to detectives Ally and Old Dog. Instead of presenting a traditional mystery where one player collects every clue, the game separates vital information between two participants. Each detective sees different details, forcing both players to communicate clearly if they hope to solve the case. The story revolves around the lingering mystery of the Cryptic Killer. Ally and Old Dog previously believed they had captured the criminal responsible for a series of elaborate crimes, with the suspect imprisoned at Anagram Asylum. Their confidence is shaken when strange locked boxes arrive at their homes, suggesting that the case may not be as finished as they thought. Whether they imprisoned the wrong person or someone else has adopted the killer's methods becomes an important question. Although the story is relatively brief, it provides enough intrigue to make the puzzles feel like parts of an investigation rather than disconnected challenges. What makes Unsolved Case particularly effective is its asymmetrical cooperative structure. Both players participate in the same investigation, but they do not receive identical information. A symbol, code, object, or sequence visible to one detective may provide the answer needed by the other. Players consequently spend much of the adventure describing what they see, comparing observations, testing theories, and discovering relationships between clues. The game is less about individually being clever and more about combining two incomplete perspectives into one solution. This approach creates entertaining situations that would not work nearly as well in a conventional single-player puzzle game. Even a simple symbol can become challenging when it must be accurately described to someone who cannot see it. Misunderstandings can send both detectives down the wrong path, while successful communication often produces satisfying moments when apparently unrelated information suddenly makes sense. Voice communication is therefore essentially part of the gameplay experience rather than merely a convenient multiplayer feature. The puzzle design concentrates on observation, codes, patterns, logical reasoning, and information exchange. The difficulty is generally approachable, which makes sense considering that Unsolved Case is intended to introduce players to the broader Cryptic Killer experience. Most challenges provide enough resistance to encourage discussion without becoming unnecessarily obscure. More importantly, the cooperative mechanic is regularly incorporated into the solutions. Neither participant can simply race ahead and solve everything independently because important pieces of information remain on the other player's side. The notebook and drawing functionality complements this design nicely. Players can record symbols, numbers, patterns, and other useful observations as they investigate. This feature strengthens the detective atmosphere while also providing a practical way to organize information. It becomes particularly useful when one player needs to explain a complicated clue that the other may want to reproduce or remember. These small interactive touches help make the process feel more like collaborative detective work. Visually, Unsolved Case uses a hand-drawn style with strong noir influences. The illustrated environments fit the mysterious subject matter and provide the game with a recognizable identity without relying on technically demanding graphics. Its presentation resembles an interactive mystery comic at times, which works well with the characters and puzzle-focused structure. The environments are primarily designed around investigation and clue discovery, so visual clarity remains more important than spectacle. One important consideration is the game's short duration. Unsolved Case is designed to be completed in approximately 30 to 60 minutes, so players should not expect a lengthy detective campaign. The compact runtime means that character development and storytelling remain relatively simple, and the adventure can end just when players become comfortable with its cooperative mechanics. Replay value is also naturally limited because knowing the puzzle solutions removes much of the uncertainty that makes the first playthrough enjoyable. However, its brevity is easier to accept because the game is offered as a free standalone introduction rather than a large commercial adventure. It provides enough content to demonstrate Eleven Puzzles' central design philosophy without demanding a significant commitment from either participant. The complete scenario gives players an opportunity to determine whether they enjoy this communication-heavy style of cooperative puzzling before exploring more substantial entries in the series. The strict two-player requirement can still be a disadvantage. Unsolved Case is fundamentally built around cooperation, so someone searching for a solitary detective experience will not find an equivalent single-player mode. The quality of the experience can also depend heavily on the person playing alongside you. A cooperative partner who enjoys describing clues and discussing theories can make the adventure extremely entertaining, while poor communication can make relatively straightforward puzzles more frustrating than intended. Despite its modest scale, Unsolved Case accomplishes its primary objective very well. It demonstrates how separating information between players can transform familiar codes and logic puzzles into genuine cooperative challenges. Instead of having two people merely occupying the same environment, the game makes each participant necessary to the other's progress. That dependence gives the adventure a stronger sense of teamwork than many multiplayer puzzle games achieve. Overall, Unsolved Case is an enjoyable miniature detective adventure that succeeds through focused cooperative design rather than size or complexity. Its mystery provides sufficient motivation, its illustrated noir presentation suits the premise, and its puzzles consistently encourage conversation and shared deduction. The limited runtime and lack of a meaningful solo option prevent it from being a more substantial experience, but as a free introduction to the Cryptic Killer series, it delivers exactly the kind of teamwork-focused puzzle solving it promises. Unsolved Case is a fun co-op game where you have to work together to solve a mystery. The only way through is to communicate clearly. I enjoyed playing with a friend to solve each stage.
