Reviews
Fun game for the price if you like a different kind of storyline.
It's not actually as bad as the reviews would make it seem. It's not a great game by any means, it's okay. The narrative and level design is alright. The bad part is the combat. It's atrocious, it's terrible. You face multiple enemies attacking you from all sides at once, with other ones shooting at you from a distance. It's fairly anger inducing. You have to put up with this for 85% of the game until you unlock some abilities, then it's actually... okay. Combat is never great by any means, but it is okay. It does reach the point that it's actually kind of fun instead of being this chore you dread. Too bad that's only for 15% of the game though. It's actually kind of sad to see. This would have been a much better game if it just gave you most of the combat abilities earlier in the game. Combat seems to have been designed around late game abilities. For example, one of the primary combat abilities is "stepping", which is that you take possession of enemies. At first you can only step into one enemy and it's very difficult to replenish the stepping ability. By the end of the game you can step three times, and it is super easy to replenish it, then all the sudden being surrounded by enemies doesn't matter because you just step into a bunch of them and have them attack each other. This should have been the case much sooner, most players won't even make it far enough to get the the decent combat because it's too frustrating early on. If you do decide to give this game a chance, pro-tip, on the skill screen don't bother with stealth, it's worthless. I don't know why they included this mechanic at all. At most you will get one or two enemies with stealth before everyone is attacking you. You can't even use stealth on the tougher enemies at all. The other word of advice is max out Umbric abilities because that is where you will make things more fun. Plus once you max out an ability tree you increase the powers of that tree. There are some combat abilities that might be worth investing in early on like the dodge ones (but the parry ones are worthless, there are too many enemies attacking you from multiple sides to make use of it, only max them out to finalize the tree and get the damage boost from it). So yeah, I guess this isn't a glowing review, but if the narrative or world look interesting to you you might as well give it a shot knowing that combat eventually gets better.
This game is a 6 out of 10 for me. It still has some bugs in it and some of the boss fights was hard for no reason.
I wish I could give this a positive review, as it's a really interesting game that tries to do some really interesting things, both in it's story and setting and it's combat mechanics. Unfortunately the game is super janky (and this coming from someone who really enjoyed gems like Mars War Logs, The Technomancer and Elex) and boss fights are so poorly tuned they create a massive diffuculty spike that is hard to overcome. The game is buggy (although no show stoppers, luckily) and is overall a chore to play. I'm keeping going because it is genuinely interesting, but I can't recommend it in this state.
I had a pretty good time with this one overall. The graphics are really nice, and I liked the whole vibe of the world. The lore was interesting too, even if the story itself was more just okay for me. The combat was probably the part I enjoyed the most. It was fun figuring out how to deal with different enemies and trying to play them against each other instead of just button-mashing my way through everything. A few things annoyed me a bit though. There are way too many collectibles, and some are really easy to miss, which can be frustrating. Some of the animations also didn’t look that great to me. And near the end, it felt a little too focused on combat. I would have liked a few more puzzles or slower moments to mix things up. Still, I enjoyed it. Not perfect, but definitely fun and with a cool world.
Nice Stealth Gameplay
I only have 5 minutes into the game and im not impressed with performance. Store page says "SteamDeck compatible", but im running an og ROG Ally (running SteamOS) which on paper is more capable than a Deck. Running at 1080p medium quality and balanced up scaling, i cant even crack 30fps. The game looks alright but the FPS seems low considering up scaling medium quality. Am i expecting too much?
