The game focuses on role-playing and interaction with other players. Since there are literally only a few of them, I can't find any reason to recommend it to anyone. It's a confusing game and very different from what the genre offers nowadays. That doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad game, it's rather unique. If you have some free time, you might want to download it and explore the world of Underlight a bit, but that's about it. Unless you have your own group to play with, or feel like trying to match playtime with others on a dedicated Discord server, it's not worth playing much. Or rather, it won't get you anywhere, since it's the players who can teach you anything.

For those reading the review with no idea what I'm talking about: Every 9 Orbits(Levels), a player must seek out a Teacher to have their Sphere level increased. Failure to do so will result in you being unable to raise your Orbit any higher. Upon doing so, your Orbit will be increased by 1 and you may resume grinding XP. You can also watch this to see a good review of what this game is like: Josh Strife Hayes checks out Underlight. I really want to recommend the game. I truly do but I can't because the devs insist on sticking to the stupid system of players "proving their worth" through ridiculous tasks. To be fair, the requirements for advancement in early Spheres and being taught Arts has largely been reduced or lifted entirely up to Orbit 35. Beyond that, you should always expect to be forced to "prove your worth" by a Teacher to be granted an Art or an increase in your Sphere. Guess what? Being granted a higher Sphere carries greater demands in "proving your worth". As one might expect, these "greater demands" are only slightly higher for successive Spheres until you are tasked for reaching Sphere 4. The general guideline states that one must lead a large scale event involving other players. Sphere 5 requires leading multiple large scale events. Sphere 6 and above require events over a long period of time that impacts the game narrative. Doesn't sound too bad, right? Wrong. Not every person enjoys putting together in-game events and being a "community pillar". This is especially true when it comes to long-running attempts at events to be deemed "worthy" of Sphere 6 or higher. The alternative for gaining Spheres is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ combination of a grind and fetch quest. Players can proceed through Spheres by raising the Major and Minor Arts related to their class to their current Sphere level. If you're Sphere 5 and at Orbit 59, you will be required to have said Arts at Level 50 or higher. From here, you MUST seek out one of the GM characters to be tasked with obtaining Support Tokens from your peers aka other players. You had best have friends who like you among "your peers" if you want an easy time with this route. Regardless of what route you take, you are completely dependent on other people's approval to continue raising your Orbit after reaching set intervals of 9. Did I mention that raising your Orbit eventually turns into a hellish grind that lasts for a week or more against deadly NPC enemies just to gain 1 Orbit? Clearing a grind of that sort does NOT count as "proving your worth" either. Instead, it merely grants you the opportunity to do so. By now, you may be asking this question; Can't a Teacher just grant you an art or sphere without all the tedious BS? The short answer is; Any teacher who does will lose their status as a teacher for "abusing their power". Just skip the game if you're annoyed by your progression being gated by stupid rules and other players' approval.
После установки занимает 128 МБ Плюс: не смотря на то, что игра вышла аж в 1997-м году, до сих пор выходят обновления (последнее на данный момент— 02.01.2021, 3.1.14 L1). И это замечательно. Минус: нет русского перевода.
I came into this game hoping that all the bad things that I had heard about it were exaggerations. And, sadly, none of them were false, as I had hoped. Rather than just recanting what I have complained about in the forums and wasting time on this review by copying and pasting what I've said before, I'll just summarize how bad it is. If you want to hear more about it, just go to the Steam community discussions and look at some of the posts comments, and you'll get the gist of it. The gameplay is basic and decent by itself, but the leveling system is simply so bad that you may as well not play the game at all if you want to make any progress at all. Its main flaw is that once you reach the maximum level in one of the arts (the name for spells and abilities in the game), you are required to go to another player that is a designated teacher, who will then grant you access to increase the maximum level in that art. This is the same for your sphere (your character's prestige level that is reached every 9 orbits. Orbits being normal level). Depending on what class (or focus, as it is called in game) you are in, you are required to find a teacher of that same class. which is difficult when not many players are ever online. Often times and especially at higher levels, teachers will require you to do quests to actually level up, which often times end up being complicated or just menial. Like asking others what an obvious skill does and then just regurgitating it back to the teacher. Or explaining what the skill does in character.... unless you explain it in a way they don't like, then they just give you a menial task. Sometimes it can be something cool like participate in an event, but often times the events that happen in game are held on weekends and often span out hours. And not only with the teacher system does it often just not work out whether you get a stupid quest to complete or cant find a teacher, but if the teacher is just busy or doesn't like you, then kiss the idea of leveling up goodbye. Also, when I played there was only about 1 or 2 soulmaster teachers i had ever met and almost never on so if you do choose to play this after reading this at least don't play that class. The XP gain for skills is slow and monotonous. I literally learned how to code a program to click the use button specifically for this game, and it just barely helped. Match that with how difficult it is to level up your skills with the teaching system, and it makes progressing in the games a nightmare. The lore of the game is complicated and mostly useless. And unless you just want to read the poorly put-together wiki or scavenge around the game for large info dumps in books and scrolls thrown about, don't bother. You could ask other players, but because the game is all role-playing games, you often times can't really understand the whole picture of what is really being explained. and while out-of-character conversations are possible, they are looked down upon and could even get you in trouble. So I personally gave up trying to understand the lore halfway through my time in the game. the problem with the player base and the game masters. The majority of the current players in the game are old players who have been playing for 10+ years and only really operate within their own social circles. and from what I have seen, they are close to the game masters. That being said, it almost makes the older players the de facto rulers and main characters of the game and makes participating hard. I have personally not run into trouble with the game masters in my time playing, but the characters like Wishbringer that are owned by the game masters are trying way too hard to be the main characters of the game. and often feel less like the whimsical and powerful oracle-type character that they seem to try to be and more like an intimidating dictator that should not be disagreed with. I can't specifically comment on any drama that has been happening with game master abuse that I have read about. But I will say that the amount of people who have spoken up about it and how bad it is has been very damning. especially with accusations of unjust banning for a game like this that requires a ton of grinding and time. TLDR All in all, this game is bad. bad gameplay that has borderline unexcusable leveling mechanics, especially for the mmo rpg genre. poor graphics even for the time. no players. bad lore. bad game master team. The people I have met on this game have been all around nice, and the only real fun that I have had was interacting with the few players I have stumbled upon. To those that I've met, I hope the best for you and that you find a new game that treats you better. Crackjaw
I first discovered this game, I believe around 1997. I watched a PBS doc on the creation of it, and was curious. After a bit of research, I gave it a try. This internet and online stuff was new to me then. Sure, I did the Prodigy thing, AOL, but both did not appeal to me at the time. Then, Underlight! This game sucked me in! Bad graphics, poor mechanics and all. I never played Meridian or that other Ultima online game, but this game, I found a home for my then state of self. Thus, I did the download for a beta. entered, and found a home. I was greeted by factions within, choices to make for my character, and of course some grind to level up. I became Jevik Bane in the dream, a true zealot of an in game belief. My character then allowed me to find escape from a troubled life, as I thought back then. This in-game persona actually brought forth real world friends. I spent many years playing this outdated game, then stopped. Yet, when this game went to Steam, I was drawn back in out of curiosity. The game, graphic wise did not change. Of course, money is needed for such, but the community it...WOW. My character Jevik Bane was still there though. I tried him for a bit, but in time, as I change, games change, I killed him off. I no longer play Underlight, but all do know, this game goes on, and highly suggest you all give it a try. Sure, it is the oldest of old school, but such a free world of discovery and adventure. This is a game the promotes creative thought and supports such. Download it. Give it few hours, and let yourself immerse your creative self of character.
Such a great Role playing game, the comunity is so wholesome and will teach you many things through the player driven lore, don't underestimate the old gems. If you truly want to play this game and learn more i suggest you join the discord where most the players interact and talk about the events that are organised.
Role playing in the most sincere form. Come make your own dream.
[
Underlight: The Magic of RPG Experience✨
Underlight is a unique RPG game. Mystery and Exploration: The world of Underlight was full of mysteries that I enjoyed exploring. It was exciting to explore new places and solve mysteries. 👎 Negatives: Learning Curve: The game can be a bit complicated at first. The learning curve can be a bit steep for beginners. Technical Issues: I sometimes encountered technical issues within the game, which affected my gaming experience a bit. Deep story and character development is one of the game's greatest strengths. Community interaction and exploration enrich the game even more. However, the learning curve for new players can be a bit steep. Technical issues can also sometimes affect the fluency. However, these details do not overshadow the overall charm of the game. Highly recommend for an enjoyable experience! █░█ █▄░█ █▀▄ █▀▀ █▀█ █░░ █ █▀▀ █░█ ▀█▀ █▄█ █░▀█ █▄▀ ██▄ █▀▄ █▄▄ █ █▄█ █▀█ ░█░ⓒ
