I rejoined this game after many many years away. It was really cool to see some of the old haunts and some familiar names from so long ago. There's still a few really great players in UL, running around the dream doing their dreamy things. In it's hay-day, there could be a few hundred people playing at once. Now, it's maybe a dozen regulars. You'll notice more characters than players if you stick around a while, most of the excess is alt characters from the usual crowd. This is, however, just a faint echo of what the game used to be, players-wise, and community-wise. The KoiWare group that took this over is very cliquey - you are either one of their beloved, or just a random player, not much in-between it seems. In-clique players can do or say pretty much whatever they want, creating strife in-game or out, break rules, rant in the discord, whatever, and they only get a brow from Koi. Anyone else will be berated, banned, kicked, etc. What was an iconic mid-90's mmo is now just a group of tiny kings and queens jealously ruling over their tiny kingdom. Granted, they are hosting this out of pocket free to anyone who wants to play, but damn they sure could use some help in how to behave with their community and player base out of game.

If you're into 90's MMOs, you 100% owe it to yourself to grab the open source version of this game, make a local private server, and explore the various maps the game has on offer. I would advise against trying the game as presented on Steam for the reasons below. Unfortunately, the active version of the game has a lot of problems. The people running the game spend most of their time talking trash about players they dislike in their private channels. The game has a vocal minority of crybullies who will absolutely seek out drama with people, and then weep when you bully back. Naturally, as they've been friends with the dramamongers running it for literal years, they will always come out on top. So much so that many of them have had to be banned multiple times, only to be allowed to come back later anyway. This normally wouldn't be a problem, but the game runs entirely on player-to-player interactions. So when you have a handful of socially powerful players and GMs who actively show favoritism and ♥♥♥♥-talk what few new players they attract that stick around longer than a few days, you end up with an endless cycle of the same half-dozen people fabricating drama between them. I absolutely love this game, and will remember my near 300 hours with it fondly. But I can't in good faith recommend the version available on Steam, and struggle to rationalize it being available via Steam to begin with given how poorly it's run.
The GameMasters have completely ruined this classic game. The guy who brought it to Life WishBringer is a decent guy but most of the people on his team he just gives them free reign to ruin a completely masterful roleplaying game. They only do events on the weekends, and they ban people just for going against their words or "law". It's more like a dictatorship over here in this game. Sadly, I would've recommended this game about 5 years ago when alot of great players were alive and we had a stronger and better GM team, but this game has been dying slowly and surely, and now with what's been going on now, I can't recommend any new players come into this game, I recommend letting it die off like it's already been doing.. You will only see about 5-10 players max in the city on the weekends, during the week, you will probably catch about 1-7 people in and out of the city, now the numbers are even less because they have been banning people being purely tyrannical. Sorry but there are wayy better roleplaying games than this one out, especially with the gamemaster team being as it is already. I would highly recommend that you don't waste your time here. I could go down the list and put a large amount of reasons why you shouldn't join this game but I'll make this list a little smaller than I could. 1.) You need other players to progress your levels in the game. (( The player population is so so small that you won't see any real power for months or years. )) 2.) The GM team are mostly made up of Tyrannical people who are all friends IRL. (( If you get into a disagreement with the GM team, you're more than likely going to be banned. )) 3.) No action in this game. (( In order to have action in this game you need the players or the GMs to login and give you some action, seeing as there are BARELY any players to begin with and most of the GMs don't login until the weekend, you're left being bored with no one in the city most of the time. )) 4.) They don't respect the playerbase. (( If you oppose anything they have set up, you will be belittled, banned, and lies spread about you. This is not about me, this is on account of MANY MANY MANY players who have been mistreated by the current GM team. )) 5.) If you plan on interacting with alot of players and having alot of fun, it won't happen here. (( Like I've stated multiple times, there is NOTHING to do in the city without players, and seeing as most of the time you'll be spending your time in the city alone, this game is a waste of your time. ))
I can't recommend this game at all, there is never anyone online whenever I tried to play. The maps are completely barren or you can't enter because you don't meet the requirements to enter areas. I get that its trying to be a roleplay game that relies on player interaction but with 0 players it falls pretty flat. . .
A Historic MMORPG, Sabotaged and Left To Rot by New Ownership.
I played this game years ago and decided to check up on it. Unfortunately, as of this review, that is impossible for new/returning players. The game now requires you to create a "KoiWare Account" (KoiWare being the new team maintaining the game). The problem is, creating an account isn't possible. Upon clicking the "Create KoiWare Account" button I was met with a browser warning stating that the sites web security certificate expired over a month ago (as of this review). Not a good sign, but I carried on into the site. Upon attempting to create an account, I was met with the following web error - "Unhandled Rejection (TypeError): error.response is undefined ./src/signup/SignupView.js/SignupView/onSubmit/< src/signup/SignupView.js:75 }) catch(error => { setFormSubmitting(false); if (error.response.status === 400) { setMessage(true); setMessageList(error.response.data.errors); } " Now, I can't tell you what any of this means. But I can tell you that no matter what account info tried or what browser I used, I got this error every time and was ultimately unable to create an account. After reading some other user reviews here on Steam, it appears that this KoiWare group has also driven away the majority or the remaining playerbase by mismanaging the in-game world (0.6 players online per day as of this review). It's truly a shame to see such a legendary and historic MMORPG fall into the hands of a dev team who, seemingly, could not care less about the game. A few years back I would have recommended this game to anyone who loves RP - but at the moment it is literally impossible to begin playing it, and with how badly its been mismanaged, I don't know if I even want to anymore.
Was banned three times in as many minutes? Very weird.
Underlight is a badly made, ancient sci-fi/high fantasy (it can be hard to tell) MMORPG from last century. Gameplay consists of basic 1990's era early MMORPG stuff with a "roleplay" specific agenda. There's 4 basic classes, tank, support, ranged and melee. Progression is gated by other players in the game (you must complete "tasks" they assign you to continue progression), so you can see how that works out... yeah, it's a disaster. The community management is incredibly toxic, with the mods just randomly banning people for lulz. Good friends of the mods can do whatever they want, breaking any "rules" etc. You're forced to accept an unenforceable and sometimes bizarre EULA with a number of problems... first, you accept a privacy policy that doesn't exist, it's not included in the EULA and no link or direction to find this fictional policy is supplied. Guess how long that holds up in court? Yeah, it doesnt. You're also mandated by the EULA to "Stay in character" because this is a "role playing game". Well, I'm taking on the role of a game reviewer that doesn't put up with a lot of crap. Let's see how that works out. The nicest thing about the game is there's zero monetisation, but then the game itself has been open sourced, so it's unclear why this is on Steam, if you really want to play it you can just download it and roll your own server for your friends. It would be a lot less toxic. Finally on the technical standfront, the game hasn't been modernised at all, no effort has been made to update the core game engine. It only displays 4:3 1024x768 resolution, it looks like it's 10 years older than Everquest, the interface is a clunky mess. Despite launching on Steam, there's no Steamworks support, to play the game, you're forced to log onto a website and hand over your email address and other personally identifying information so the developers can profile you and sell your information to third parties. Given how toxic their moderators are, how comfortable do you feel handing personally identifying information to them? This is just not worth the bother.
The game focuses on role-playing and interaction with other players. Since there are literally only a few of them, I can't find any reason to recommend it to anyone. It's a confusing game and very different from what the genre offers nowadays. That doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad game, it's rather unique. If you have some free time, you might want to download it and explore the world of Underlight a bit, but that's about it. Unless you have your own group to play with, or feel like trying to match playtime with others on a dedicated Discord server, it's not worth playing much. Or rather, it won't get you anywhere, since it's the players who can teach you anything.
