This game made me a lesbian, 10/10.
UNBEATABLE is a game about art, it is a game about performance, it even is a game about having ADHD and liking women. This game has a beautiful soundtrack, as to be expected from a rhythm game but it reminds me of a wide variety of genres I have enjoyed over the years. Even though the game only uses two buttons for the actual rhythm section, it still is very hard to keep up with some tracks, especially on UNBEATABLE or star difficulties. Besides the arcade mode, the story is hard hitting and will pull at the heart strings of any creative that plays it. UNBEATABLE makes me want to make better art.
UNBEATABLE? Clearly not because I beat the game.
as a rhythm game, i really like the different rhythm games.. or rhythm minigames or something in the story mode, i wish there was a way to play them outside of that. the arcade mode is like a standard rhythm game, which if is what you are looking for, is good. go listen to the music. so the story. it's messy. it kind of drags you along in the first two episodes, which is, well, a 3rd of the story, though by the third episode, everything starts making more sense and onward. still, the story keeps jumping over explaining how or why some things happen? bugs and some design choices often chip away at you while you try to enjoy the story. those are the not fun parts. those aside, i finished the game literally just now and i don't know what to say about the ending yet. but the dialogue is really good. it's the most consistent part of the writing, and it's impactful. it almost makes up for the flaws of the storytelling. this, and the flaws, though, makes the game feel especially real, like, a creation made with a little of every kind of thing their creators are, and that feels nice. that and the art (including the visual variety) also speaks for the story. though i really wouldn't complain if the bugs were fixed i rate 4/5 stars
I could probably write an entire essay about this game. One that I would title: "The Absolute Dumpster Fire I Loved". UNBEATABLE is hard to quantify. Honestly speaking, it has tons of bugs and small issues, and the story and pacing honestly is pretty terrible for the first 75% of the game. But this might be the first time I can recall that that last 25% completely made the journey worth it. The story manages to completely justify itself, the art is wholly amazing from beginning to end, and the music strikes an excellent balance for a specific audience who really needs it. In a world where media is growing standardized and soulless, this travesty held together by duct tape made me feel something remarkable. Enough that I kept going back to it to play the arcade mode purely to immerse myself in it more. This game is not for everyone, and it's not for anyone who's "just looking for a good time" because it is not that. This game is for people who love art, no matter how broken it is.
To review UNBEATABLE, all caps or no caps, I think I need to start by positing a hypothetical. Have you ever turned on the radio, or been in a store where they've got music on, and heard some absolute schlock? Just, vapid, nothing pop music. Or maybe heard some corporate-ass stock music, that works too. And on a technical level, it's fine, maybe even quality, the notes are in key and it has the structure down right and maybe there's a little flourish in the background of the chorus if you're lucky, but you probably aren't. And it's fine, but you just feel nothing listening to it, because like. Who gives a ♥♥♥♥? Like, seriously. Who gives a ♥♥♥♥ about this stuff? The listeners? Does it have fans or people who've stockholmed themselves into subjecting themselves to this out of habit? Did the singers, the composers? It all feels written by committee, like a bunch of guys in suits got together to pay a band that's lost their drive to make a song that's tolerable to as many people as possible. And nobody gives a ♥♥♥♥. And that's, fine, I guess? Not giving a ♥♥♥♥ is something society really likes. Kids, kids give a ♥♥♥♥. They've got a lot of ♥♥♥♥♥ to give, it's a big scary world and they feel everything about it. But growing up, a lot of people say that growing up means you gotta stop giving a ♥♥♥♥. That you gotta settle for okay. Find a job that doesn't make you too miserable. Get married. Have kids. Retire. Die. Live the life you're supposed to, just don't give too much of a ♥♥♥♥ about it. Don't be upset when your dreams don't come to pass. Be realistic. To review UNBEATABLE, all caps or no caps, I need to continue with a second hypothetical. Have you ever gone and listened to a local band? They almost certainly give a ♥♥♥♥. They play and sing with a drive and passion you've NEVER heard from Grocery Store Pop Music, they play with crappy amps and their voice cracks and there's like four choruses even if that pisses you off because ♥♥♥♥ you they wanted that. They give a ♥♥♥♥! And on a technical level, it's not perfect. Sometimes it might even be bad. But ♥♥♥♥, you feel alive! Because they care, they care so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ much, it makes YOU care! You give a ♥♥♥♥ about this music! In a world where everything is training you to not give a ♥♥♥♥, giving a ♥♥♥♥ means something. They don't want you to give a ♥♥♥♥ about your clothes, about your job, about how you're treated, about the government, about anything you actually believe in. Giving a ♥♥♥♥ means caring, about all of this. And giving a ♥♥♥♥ means being loud. I have played a lot of good games, a lot of deep games, a lot of games so full of love and care that it bleeds out from every little metaphorical pore, but UNBEATABLE is one of very few games I've experienced that feels the need to go out and scream that it GIVES A ♥♥♥♥. It has to give a ♥♥♥♥ LOUD. Everyone's gotta know it. And in ways, it falters. It has more flaws than games I care less about. Assets clipping, some wonky writing, that one chart that's an insane difficulty spike that pissed me off REALLY bad, that one ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ platforming side-challenge where the camera and ♥♥♥♥♥♥ collision make it just abhorrent but I wanted to commit, point is there are flaws. A lot of them. But, much like a local band, that's okay. Because Unbeatable GIVES A ♥♥♥♥. Even if that giving a ♥♥♥♥ kind of speaks to a teenage and young adult self-righteous directionless rage, it CARES on a level that's so lost in so many places. It is a game that does not compromise its vision just to be more broadly appealing, because that would mean not giving a ♥♥♥♥, and they REALLY give a ♥♥♥♥. You know, when you explain an idea, the idea fundamentally changes. I've spent my life not really giving a ♥♥♥♥. About how I dress, how I live, how much time I spend exhausted in bed, about what I eat, about what I do with my time, about how living like this is slowly ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ killing me. But UNBEATABLE is inspiring, in just how loud and brash it is. How much it gives a ♥♥♥♥. It makes me want to give a ♥♥♥♥. It makes me want to write a long and dumb review that makes the phrase "give a ♥♥♥♥" stop sounding like words, for one, but it also makes me want to try. To wear bright and cool clothes because ♥♥♥♥ anyone who thinks I should just blend in. It makes me want to make music again, make weirder music, louder music. It makes me want to go see local bands, go make more friends, UNBEATABLE makes me want to CARE. Because it cares just so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ much that it's infectious, that it makes me want to live. I think once you've played UNBEATABLE, you'll either really like it or you really won't. But either way, you'll give a ♥♥♥♥, and I think that's all it really wants. And the idea changes you in return.
I thought it was just a goofy rhythm game with a cool story. Turns out its one of the coolest stories I've ever played with lots of emotions and even more relatability (and confusion). The ending had me buffed hard. Safe to say I recommend this to everyone.
This is not a story about love. But it is a story regarding that which has been lost and is still to be found. While there may be slight issues with load time or frame lag at random moments, it occurs few and far between through my playtime. UNBEATABLE contains so many songs that you would never have thought you could hear and blends them beautifully into a rhythm game and story, not to mention the astounding works created by other artists and feature in the Arcade Mode. I'm not much of a rhythm game player but I still love them and would definitely recommend it to other rhythm game players who enjoy a story with playable songs and minigames throughout.
I just beat the UNBEATABLE.... Honestly I love this game, a lot, more than i should have lmao for starters, I think the rhythm gameplay for this game is not that bad, at first I thought it was very jank and kinda bad design, but the more I play, the more I fell in love with it. Basically it's just a muse dash gameplay but there's 2 direction that it can go to, another alternative gameplay is the fighting one, same thing basically but vertical. Anyways apart from the gameplay, I think the story is not really that great, except for the last phase of the story. I see the vision but the execution could have been better, my complaints is that the pacing for the story is not really balanced or great, and also the gameplay for the story does not support with the story pacing, My complaints for the gameplay is that there's no checkpoint in the chapters, so if you wanna do an achievement, you'd have to restart the chapter from the beginning and that sucks, and also the dialogue for the characters are very poorly placed, most of the time it blocks the other characters dialogue, but thankfully when it blocks, it's not really an important dialogue to know. That's enough for my criticism, time to talk about the part I love about this game, I LOVE the concept of the story, and also the last phase/chapter for the story is executed very well done. Another aspect I really-really like is their OSTs. They are very-very good, It have a feeling of western indie rock with the twist of Japanese music theory (their chord progression /& feel), they're basically my favorite part of this whole game. (I will say the release for music streaming service are not mixed as well as the ones in this game :[ ), and also I love the amount of references of actual music theory they put in this game. and lastly for the achievements, I 100%-ed this game's steam achievement in 51 hours which could have been under 50 hours, because there's one achievement that is really stupid hard and it isn't even based on the rhythm aspect of the game, it's the 'I KNOW WHAT TYPE OF PERSON YOU ARE' achievement, I suggest you to see it by yourself, cause words can't describe the pain that people endured to get this achievement. But other than that based on my experience, this game has been the most fun game I've 100%-ed this year (steam achievement) If you want to buy this game, I really recommend you to try the prototype of this game 'UNBEATABLE : white label' first before buying, if you like white label, you will love this game also. Shout out to my awesome friend that bought me this game for my birthday <3 rating 8.7/10 enjoyment 9.7/10 quaver shrimp quaver
