This is so good! I like the story... The designs... Even the music is epic!!! There are no voices and I am thankful for that, as I like to create my own. >:3 The artwork is impressive and all the CGs... AHHHHHH! So good! I think the hottest ones were with "Senpai/Suzuki"... Especially the water and the last one... >.> "Subaru's" comes close too... Poor "Secret Character", who didn't get much of a story... It's more of a story of chance? Without knowing the person too much? But the ending was funny heh heh. I don't mean the romantic part! Even the achievements were funny! I liked the mini games and exploring the rooms and learning more about characters and events. The novel comes in both English and Russian andddddddddddddd It's spectacular! Both translations are well done and they know the sayings/phrases super well. Who's the best? There is no such thing! Every story happened in alternative story line and every character had something unique to offer. But... I think the stronger emotions were with "Subaru". Not for me. I mean the character. It has absolutely nothing to do with him having black hair. Like nothing at all. (Joking aside, his feelings are the strongest). It's super good... Super fun... And can't wait to come back and re-read it once more!!!
I'm sorry, but I didn't like this game. I really felt that the main character was simply enduring her situation without really acting or taking responsibility for it. How can you be in a romantic relationship *by accident* for months, in love with someone else and do nothing about it all that time??! I have to admit that despite her severe lack of self-confidence, which is clearly highlighted in the game, I couldn't really empathize with her... The ending is really far-fetched. I understand the need for drama, and I know that otome games aren't always meant to be realistic, but this twist isn't really well done. Overall, I didn't really get hooked on the story and how it was constructed. Many moments and dialogues sounded false. Perhaps this story could have held up if it had been developed over several episodes... In any case, I don't think I'm part of the target audience of this game: too many lies and inconsistencies, despite a few funny moments. Still, the music and graphics were pleasant. Beautiful scenery and color palette.
Good novel about keeping love and friendship. I recommend to read it
Hello there fellow VN enjoyers. I thought 2 share my thoughts and feelings on this game as well. Even if I usually don't do much reviews (compared to how many video games (variety of genres) I've been playing in my life). Also English isn't my native language, so sorry for that. Please be aware that the review could contain a few minor or bigger spoilers (those will be marked as spoilers). Sounds ♫: Sounds and Music are rly nice. No VA. Graphics ☼: Graphics are really neat, even though most CGs were maybe a bit "plain" imo. Controls ✥: You have more or less the normal VN controls. Story ❀: You have a main love interest who you plan on confessing your love to, then stuff happens (keeping it spoiler free) and you are kinda "rushed" through the story with more or less plot-twists. Replayability ∞: I would recommend going through all 3 routes, but not sure if I would replay it as a whole. My Opinion ❤: So I had my fun with it. I guess my favourite was Sergei and I was really sad that his route is kinda cut short of most stuff so you don't really feel the romance there. Beside that you have ups and downs, as in good and bad parts. Didn't expect the spicy stuff to be honest but it may have made some routes more enjoyable. Negatives ✗: The translation was kinda odd at some times (maybe because I am a non native english) so I had to read some parts more than once. Also the fact that every route you decide to take more or less resolves around still a precise guy can be annoying at some times. ~ I would not recommend the game as a full price title but If you find it on sale and you want to try it out, sure thing go for it. 3/5 ✮
Good art, but the storyline is an exercise in frustration
I would not recommend purchasing this visual novel, especially at full price as completing the story for me was an uncharacteristic act of masochism. I will elucidate further below with many spoilers, so continue at your own risk.
The main criticism I have is that the characters are narcissists, manipulative and controlling of not just other people, but also their 'friends'. The dynamic truly exemplifies 'With friends like these, who needs enemies'; where the major 'twist' of the story being that the friends manipulated the main character into the scenario that is the crux of the story. It is clear from the beginning, even to the protagonist, that Suzuki probably never would have accepted her feelings sincerely, merely played with them and yet Kagari, (the 'best friend') pushed her into trying to confess. Suzuki is known as a playboy, yet the protagonist is so arrogant to think that she can change him (whether this is Kagari's influence is unclear). It is baffling that she is further surprised when he ACTS like a playboy, flirting and touching her sensually without her consent when she is dating Subaru. He manipulates the protagonist with this hot and cold, mock innocenct act of obliviousness towards her feelings, and also manipulates the rest of the school. He carefully calculates his activities, being on the council to look good for future prospects, to get sex from the Council president and play with her feelings and to use as a scapegoat for responsibilities he agrees to with his group of friends; he even admits he only joined this art school to give his dad the middle finger. Later, he eventually shows growth by admitting these flaws, but shows no behaviour about changing these toxic traits; a pattern that is seen in all four of the main characters. Subaru is touted as a bad-tempered but stalwart friend, yet he is shown to be just as manipulative. He deliberately gets in the way of the protagonist's confession and worst of all, takes silence as consent. He shows further problems with failing to get the protagonist's consent when they are dating, touching inappropriately, leaving 'marks' on her body in an act of possession as though she is property, and controlling her behaviour with anger and aggression. Kagari is described by the protagonist as her best and only female friend. She is openly controlling and manipulative, showing no remorse for this behaviour or her frequent temper tantrums. She treats the protagonist more akin to a doll or a pet than a friend who should be her equal, controlling what she wears, openly criticising her behaviour and appearance. Worst of all, Kagari explains these behaviours as 'helping' the protagonist, exuding a vibe of charity and pity. The most infuriating part of the storyline is the protagonist. The story being told through their perspective allows the audience to understand her view of the world and it is truly twisted. Perhaps from her friends' manipulation, perhaps just her own inherent ideals, the protagonist is pessimistic, self-pitying, strangely aggressive and incredibly misogynistic. Whilst being all these toxic things, her ideals and view of the world also manages to be incredibly hollow and vapid, with dashes of hypocrisy. She is insecure about her own appearance (probably because of Kagari as well as previous bullying) yet judges others appearance, evidenced by her thoughts towards Sergei and how disgusted she is by the 'vixens' that chase Suzuki, though she is actively doing the same thing. Every female in the game is associated with negative thoughts from the protagonist with little evidence of deserving these kind of thoughts or harsh judgement, even Kagari can't escape some of the protagonist's negative judgement particularly in the beginning introduction of her in the novel. The protagonist seems to have internal unnecessary aggression towards Subaru, assuming every thing he does has malignant intentions even without evidence and it brings into question why they are friends in the first place if she thinks so lowly of him. However the protagonist's worst trait is lack of proactivity. This is passed off as social anxiety but this anxiety only appears when suitable for the plot. There also seems to be a misunderstanding of anxiety and peer pressure, I cannot imagine anxiety causing someone to go along in a relationship she doesn't want for over a month. Her indecisiveness was a key factor in the game's illusion of choice, where the player's choices do not matter for a big portion of the novel; and are more frustrating than if the player hadn't been given a choice at all.
There are further problematic storyline design choices, in that there are a few situations of racism and contradictions like the protagonist being super clumsy, but also a karate prodigy; worst of all, the characters have minimal personal growth as people. I do wonder who the intended audience is for the visual novel, as the characters ages are not stated, yet they participate in raunchy activities; whilst also showing extremely immature behaviour and views of the world. It is also a possibility that nuances got lost in translation as portions of the story felt unnatural in their wording, so this is something to be kept in mind.
Typical is an independent visual novel that wears its inspirations proudly, presenting a warm and familiar tale about youth, companionship, and the uncertainty that comes with growing up. Developed by kalanhow and published by TsunamiGames, the game follows Amaterasu, an art student navigating university life in Tokyo alongside a small circle of friends whose relationships evolve over time. The title itself hints at the experience awaiting players: a story built around recognizable anime-inspired themes, where everyday conversations and emotional decisions take center stage. While it does not attempt to radically redefine the genre, it succeeds in crafting an accessible and inviting narrative for players who appreciate character-focused storytelling. At its heart, the game explores the delicate balance between friendship and romance. Amaterasu's interactions with her companions gradually reveal differing personalities, ambitions, and emotional struggles. Each member of the cast fulfills a distinct role within the story, helping to create an engaging group dynamic that carries the experience from beginning to end. Rather than relying on grand plot developments, Typical emphasizes the quieter moments of life—shared experiences, awkward encounters, and the lingering question of whether pursuing love is worth risking an established friendship. These themes are universally relatable and give the narrative a sense of sincerity, even when it leans into familiar genre conventions. The game's branching structure provides players with opportunities to influence the direction of the story through dialogue choices. Multiple routes encourage repeat playthroughs, allowing players to discover alternate outcomes and gain a better understanding of the cast. The overall length, which falls within the range of several hours, feels appropriate for the material being presented. The pacing remains steady throughout, avoiding unnecessary filler while still allowing enough room for emotional scenes to resonate. Although veteran visual novel fans may recognize many of the narrative beats long before they occur, the game's charm lies less in surprise and more in the comfort of spending time with its characters. Presentation is another area where Typical performs admirably. The character illustrations are expressive and complement the tone of the story, while the backgrounds effectively establish the atmosphere of campus life and the surrounding city. The visual style is vibrant without becoming distracting, contributing to the game's easygoing appeal. In addition to its visual novel framework, the title introduces light point-and-click mechanics that let players interact with objects in select scenes. These elements are relatively minor but provide a welcome change of pace, making the experience feel slightly more interactive than many of its peers. Typical ultimately succeeds by understanding its audience. It delivers a straightforward romantic narrative with enough personality and player agency to remain engaging throughout its runtime. Its greatest strengths are its likable cast, approachable storytelling, and pleasant presentation, while its biggest weakness is its reluctance to move beyond the expectations of the genre. Players seeking innovative mechanics or a deeply complex plot may come away underwhelmed, but those looking for a relaxing visual novel filled with heartfelt moments will likely find plenty to enjoy.
