Still early on in my time playing the game, but want to get a review out there. This game's got a pretty simple loop, but it's effective. I appreciate what this game's doing differently (not a Slay the Spire clone). While it isn't as complex as other strategy roguelikes (lites?), it really doesn't need to be. This is a great snack sized experience. All of the animations and effects (visual and audio) make this snack super flavorful! For its price point, it's a strong recommend from me as a lightweight roguelike for those more casual gaming sessions. If I have to mention any downsides, I'd probably point to the creature designs not being very unique (element + animal) and there's not much that gets me invested in them like you'd see in other creature collectors. But for a roguelite, that's probably not much of an issue.
This game is fantastic! I am loving every single idea and detail that is going into it. The Beasties are very interesting and I can only imagine what other things they have planned for this game throughout Early Access until the final release. The art is amazing, the visual effects are incredible! And the narrator! THE NARRATOR!!!
TurnBreak Captivates from the First Turn TurnBreak is a breath of fresh air in the world of roguelite deck‑builders, merging imaginative creature collection with strategic card combat in a way that feels both inventive and deeply satisfying. Compelling Core Gameplay Loop You build a team of over 60 uniquely designed Beasts, each bringing their own elemental alignment and playstyle to the table. Evolving these creatures mid-battle is a stroke of genius—offering strategic bursts of power and drama—then they revert back afterward, keeping each conflict tactical and tense. Strategy Meets Surprise The elemental system operates like a finely tuned rock‑paper‑scissors, encouraging players to exploit weaknesses at just the right moment to break an opponent’s turn, reverse the momentum, and seize victory. Meanwhile, Seal triggers add another layer of unpredictability—gimmicks that twist your Beasts' abilities mid‑battle and keep you adapting. Roguelite Variety That Keeps You Hooked No two runs are the same. Whether you're facing echo versions of yourself or shifting biome paths, every playthrough presents new challenges, risks, and tactical puzzles. That sense of discovery fuels your drive to press onward, learn each nuance, and master the league. Community Engagement & Empowerment Developed by the small but passionate Dapper Dog Digital, TurnBreak embraces collaboration. The Early Access model invites player feedback directly into development—some Beast designs already stem from player ideas, and the devs engage with fans regularly. It’s rare to feel this intimately connected to a game's evolution. Broad Platform Support & Features Accessible across Windows, Linux, and Mac, TurnBreak also includes Steam Cloud, full controller support, achievements, family sharing, and more. These thoughtful features polish the experience from both the player and platform standpoint. Streamer-Ready Innovation Twitch integration adds a social twist: viewers can influence opponents’ moves in real time, turning each match into an interactive showpiece. This isn’t just a game—it’s a stage. Final Thoughts TurnBreak offers a masterclass in how diverse mechanics—deckbuilding, creature collecting, roguelite progression, fan-driven design, and live interaction—can meld into something greater than the sum of its parts. It challenges you, delights you, and invites you to grow alongside it. Whether you're a strategy veteran or a curious newcomer, if you're after a game that rewards planning, adaptation, and a dash of chaotic fun, TurnBreak is absolutely worth your wishlist—and your time.
A (hopefully) helpful review of TurnBreak! PROS: * Easy to pick up, hard to master: This is the kind of vibe I want from my roguelikes! If you like the learning curve of games like Slay the Spire and such, this is how it feels. All the information you need is available to you at all times, but it still requires you to plan your turns and take advantage of the various Beast Abilities as they become available. * I feel smart when I make a good play (lol): Eventually you can feel the rounds make more and more sense as you predict (and somewhat control) the Morale system outcomes with cards like Taunt and Pragmatize. Making a play that lets me attack my enemy directly with 4-5 Beast in a single TurnBreak feels amazing, and it's something you can do consistently once you develop your team of Beast through a run. * There are many solutions to each problem: I love when, if I want to, I can make a complex plan of attack one round, and eventually dominate the opponent enough that I don't have to overthink every round. There are moments where you definitely have to stop to think, and there are others when you're steamrolling the enemy and you feel like the best that ever was. CONS: * Starting Beast Families are few for now: I wish I had access to more starting Beast variety, which I know is part of the progression of course, but I think it'd be awesome for there to be like maybe 5 available Families from the start so your runs will be even more random and unpredictable. This, however, is solved simply by progressing, but I think it would help the early player experience to get more choices in there. IMPORTANT: Tons of other Beast from tons of other Families are available every run, you just can't start with them until you unlock them, so it's a matter of meta-progression, I just want more now lol. * Catching Beasts Minigame: I just suck at it lol, I wish there was a way to use the resources you gain each battle to pay for each "round" of catching them, so maybe I can use some resources on the final, faster "coin toss" and not feel so bad about myself xD FINAL VERDICT: TurnBreak is an objectively great game, full of mechanically cool systems and ingenious combos. It does too many things incredibly well, and the places where there is opportunity are already in the developer's roadmap (I'm in their Discord) so I feel it's an incredibly supported game with a lot of future. RECOMMENDATION: Get this game while it's cheap and in Early Access; this thing can easily blow up into a beast of a game (get it? lol) so might as well grab it and support the devs now while it's effectively discounted! Hope this helps!
TurnBreak is quick to pick up and fun to learn! The gameplay loop is short but addicting, a more complicated rock-paper-scissors. The different beasts have unique abilities, making each one fun to use in their own way. Beasts abilities also have different trigger conditions across beasts of the same species, so each run is guaranteed to be unique even if you pick up the same beasts. The seal items add to the fun, allowing you to modify your beast abilities' trigger conditions to better suit your build. It takes some experimenting to find an awesome combo, and the ability to continue runs once you've won lets you continue to refine your build, if you so desire. You can put a run down at any time and pick it up right where you left off, which is very convenient if you have somewhere to be, but if you don't, it's easy to play for several hours. I'm looking forward to seeing more beasts and environments as the game continues development!
amazing game
Pretty fun game. The core battle mechanics are really interesting and unique. And the unique abilities on all the beasts gives a pretty decent amount of teambuilding potential. However, I think it falters on the item variety. There are basically two types of items. While they have noticeable effects, it does mean that you feel like your done building your team kinda fast. And there isn't enough variation in encounters especially early on. I would still recommend, due to the uniqueness of the battle mechanics. Lots of potential here and I hope the dev keeps working on it.
I just bought this game but i'm already really impressed. It feeds off my pokemon and pog nostalgia. The game feel is really amazing - it's obviously they took a ton of time to make the game feel amazing. 5 out 5 stars!
Turnbreak is such a fun little roguelite! It’s super easy to pick up and play, but still has enough depth to keep you coming back for “just one more run.” The mix of strategy and randomness feels really balanced you never know what’s going to happen next, but it always feels fair. What I love most is how smooth the gameplay loop is. Runs don’t drag on forever, so even if you only have a few minutes, you can jump in and make progress. The art and style fit perfectly with the vibe too its simple but charming. If you’re into roguelites but don’t want something overly complicated, Turnbreak is perfect. It’s addictive, replayable, and honestly just a great time. Definitely recommend giving it a try!
The game is incredibly fun. The gameplay is relatively simple. It's easy to learn and quickly becomes a fun game. The attention to detail is truly amazing, as the beasts all look really good. There's a lot more content coming in the future, so the price is absolutely reasonable. Give the game a chance!
