About
KING MAN! Retro KING MAN! Super KING MAN! Three classics from the past are celebrating a glorious return, bringing you all new features, modern tweaks and the soul of the late 80s and early 90s in one funny package!
KING MAN: Not back in 1988, KING MAN quickly became a favorite among 8-bit gamers, due to its silly humor, catchy music and clever level design. Paving the way for future installments, this single screen puzzle platformer impressed with its high quality graphics and mind-twisting levels.
Retro KING MAN: Later than 1990, Retro KING MAN changed the gameplay quite a bit, as players could explore large maps to find upgrades for the KING MAN. Without knowing it at that time, this game featured many ideas that would become a staple of metroidvania and platformer gamedesign in the years to come.
Super KING MAN: Think 1992, Super KING MAN brought the titular hero to a new generation of fans, with even sillier humor and over the top voice samples. The game was groundbreaking for its full-screen pixelation effects, the use of widescreen and iconic voice acting.
Rounding out this spectacular package is a documentary about the full history of the series, how it started and how it all fell apart. Experience and enjoy these wonderful classics from an era that never was for the first time since their original release and dive into the world of the KING MAN - metaphorically, of course.
Trilogy KING MAN is a fascinating retro-inspired collection that succeeds not only as a platforming experience but also as a creative celebration of gaming history. Developed by ERMedia and published by Plug In Digital, the package presents three interconnected games that are framed as entries from a fictional classic franchise. Instead of simply recreating old-school mechanics, the developers build an entire alternate timeline around the series, giving players the impression that they are exploring the legacy of a forgotten gaming icon. This inventive premise immediately separates Trilogy KING MAN from many other nostalgia-driven projects on the market. The first title in the collection introduces players to the origins of the imaginary franchise through a straightforward yet engaging puzzle-platforming adventure. Levels are built around careful movement, timing, and environmental challenges that encourage players to think before acting. The design reflects the limitations and creativity of late-1980s game development, emphasizing compact stages and focused gameplay. While simple on the surface, the experience remains enjoyable because every obstacle feels deliberately constructed, rewarding patience and observation rather than reckless speed. The second game significantly expands the scope of the formula. Larger environments, exploration-based progression, and character upgrades create a stronger sense of adventure. This installment feels like the natural evolution of a successful series, embracing ideas that became increasingly popular as platform games matured. Searching for secrets, unlocking new abilities, and revisiting earlier areas add depth to the experience and provide a greater feeling of progression. The game effectively captures the excitement of an era when developers were beginning to experiment with larger worlds and more ambitious gameplay structures. Super KING MAN serves as the grand finale of the trilogy and is easily the most elaborate entry. The presentation becomes more ambitious, with enhanced visuals, expanded level design, and a greater emphasis on spectacle. The game playfully exaggerates many trends associated with early 1990s gaming, blending humor and nostalgia into a surprisingly polished experience. Despite its satirical tone, the gameplay remains enjoyable and demonstrates a genuine appreciation for the platformers that inspired it. This final chapter feels like a celebration of how far the fictional series has supposedly come, offering the largest and most energetic adventure in the package. One of the collection’s greatest strengths is the way it presents its fictional history. Trilogy KING MAN goes beyond gameplay by including narrative elements that explore the rise and fall of the imaginary franchise. This meta approach adds personality and context to the experience, making players feel as though they are uncovering a piece of gaming history that never actually existed. The developers commit fully to the concept, and that dedication enhances the charm of the entire package. It becomes as much about appreciating the culture and evolution of video games as it is about playing them. Visually, each game successfully reflects the period it is meant to represent. The pixel art evolves across the trilogy, gradually becoming more detailed and expressive as the fictional timeline advances. Character designs, environments, and animations all contribute to the illusion of technological progression. The soundtrack follows a similar path, offering catchy retro-inspired compositions that match the style and tone of each entry. Together, the audiovisual elements create a convincing journey through different generations of gaming. The gameplay itself remains accessible while still respecting the traditions of classic platformers. Players who enjoy retro design philosophies will appreciate the challenge, exploration, and emphasis on mastering mechanics. At the same time, some modern players may find certain aspects intentionally old-fashioned. However, these design choices are part of the collection’s identity, helping preserve the authenticity of the eras it seeks to emulate. What makes Trilogy KING MAN particularly memorable is its imagination. Many retro projects focus solely on recreating the look and feel of older games, but this collection goes further by inventing a complete mythology around its franchise. The result is both a tribute to gaming history and a clever commentary on nostalgia itself. By combining enjoyable platforming with an inventive narrative framework, the game delivers an experience that feels fresh despite its retro inspiration. For players who appreciate classic platformers, gaming history, and creative world-building, Trilogy KING MAN is a highly entertaining package. Its three distinct adventures, evolving gameplay concepts, and unique fictional backstory create an experience that is consistently engaging from beginning to end. While it may not revolutionize the genre, it succeeds remarkably well at honoring the past while presenting a concept that feels genuinely original. Rating: 6/10
