Hey guys, I am actually kind of a friend of the developer and I've been following the development of the game for some time now. I really like this game, Like really like it. It's perfect to play with a younger cousin or with a group of friends to have some fun messing around with the different combination of modifiers and game modes. One combo that's super fun is Greasy Wood, Brawler, and Party in both pvp and campaign. Things get crazy quick but that's just part of the fun! Like I said I've been a long time fan of the project so take my review with a grain of salt. Still though, Rodney congratulations on the launch this is an awesome game!
Found this game thanks to SilokHawk! Toy Tanks is a truly enjoyable Wii Tanks spiritual successor that remembers what made the original game so fun, while also improving upon the formula!
Game is worth <$10, honestly about 5... I bought it to support the dev who made a successor to wii tank game this and tanklike are my 2 goto simple tank games it's such a small market, that it's nice someone at least tried still could use some better upgrades for replay ability some kinda shop or money/xp earned from beating tanks diff types of ammo you can equip etc
Very Fun! I found the game when it was still in early beta and it has much improved since then. The physics are really fun to play around with once you master them, but I still have lots of fun even without fully mastering them. All in all it is a very fun game :) (P.S. Brawler is best)
This game is still in early access but they removed it just so it doesn't get a warning from steam. Soo, what now? Is this game in early access limbo? Probably. Are we gonna get an update soon? Certainly not.
As you can see, this game takes heavy inspiration from Wii Play's tank game and I find it equally enjoyable. The added dash mechanic makes it very chaotic and a lot of fun being able to ram into tanks to deal damage as well as ramming into bullets to repel them. My only complaint (but not really) is that the aiming line is very very short and I find it difficult to get bullets where I want them to go sometimes. However, I've taken this up as more of a challenge to get better aiming with it and I've made some progress and it feels good being able to snipe a stationary tank from far away in the map. The single player modes are quite challenging if you're a completionist like me. There are three difficulty modes to choose from and to three star a map you must beat all the tanks within the allotted time as the meter ticks down. Taking hits subtracts from the meter and landing hits / getting kills replenishes this meter so the focus of the game is speed and efficiency which is a tad frustrating with how chaotic it is but that's what makes it fun.
Lots of QoL problems. The game's graphic setting straight up don't work correctly at all. The game doesn't know how to handle window priorities which is very annoying in the harder boss fights. The game also seems to has aspects that are frame bound so at 1000fps (which the game will try to pull even with 60 enabled) somethings just break. The UI is also not that well designed. The game tells you that you got a new tank. Does it tell you where or how to equip or use it no. Also visual telling of features is just not a thing. There are invulnerable enemies that take no dmg until everything else is killed. How are you supposed to know this. Not at all besides trial and error. Also how are you supposed to know there is a dash button and where it even is. Has fun parts to it but overall a pretty frustrating experience.
Followed this guy's development through some game development channels, and he's really done it great. A wonderful project. I was a huge fan of Wii Play's Tank game and the fact that this is such a wholesome spiritual successor to it makes me extremely happy. I marvel at some of the detail and thought put into such a simple game. The lack of online co-op is a bit of a bummer since Remote Play is not perfect, and not a viable option for everyone, and having three dimensional physics interactions in an orthographic perspective can be a little confusing, but those are minor complaints. One of the biggest issues I've had so far are the fact that the game is not colorblind friendly by any means. It's a guessing game as to what tank I'm going up against since only a few of them have unique textures, a lot of tanks have special behavior that are significant and being colorblind prevents me from knowing this before seeing their ability in action (for example, healing and mine layer tanks look identical). There are also a lot of red or gray tanks that seem to have radical differences but I've never been able to tell any of them apart, if I'm even supposed to. This also makes the tank selection sort of hard because some tanks have very differing behavior and similar colors, but I've been able to memorize them from the stat distribution patterns. That said, it's still loads of fun and I can brute force most rooms and learn the tanks by memory without needing to tell them apart. It's still a solvable problem if enough textural differences are introduced to the tanks, or at least making their two-tone patterns more unique, but it's something I'm jaded about and very used to. If you're colorblind, it may or may not be troublesome for you. Overall the game is a bundle of joy, and if you're not colorblind I imagine it'd be even more joy. Remote Play Together works for me and it's been a hute. Very cute party game, and the difficulty can get really quite intense if you want a challenge. The current sale going on is a no brainer, but $12 is absolutely fair if this is something you're into.
Wii Play Tanks but cooler and more fleshed out!
The game play is fun but tried to play with a friend and the menus are just awful when trying to do steam play together. Does not appear like it will be updated as they have started a new game
