"Towards The Pantheon" is a very poorly made "I Can't Believe It's Not RPG Maker" JRPG train wreck with very poorly done pixelcrap assets (that look worse than just flipping RPG Maker assets) and of course you can't have an amateur pixelcrap JRPG without a cringey high school anime club dropout fanfiction involving the developers imagainary girlfriend. This time the imaginary girlfriend is called Freyja, who is a completely generic anime fanclub thing. The story revolves around Freyja and her party being summoned to defeat the source of The Sworn Light, which is gaining power throughout the world, which is a pretty terrible plot, but what should we expect. I guess if I wrote fan-fictions about my imaginary girlfriend I'd be terrified of light. This feels more like a tech demo or a project smacked together hurriedly to try make a kind of minimum viable product just good enough to pass the developers unambitious idea and shove it into Steam Direct to see if you can actually pay $100 and publish junk through Steam Direct. Yeah, you can. Is this good for gamers? Nope. This features really godawful pixelcrap "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this looks much worse than most other games because of that decision, and that's a major deterrent to gamers. Games like Terraria and Stardew Valley succeeded despite the bad graphics, not because of them. This game is fairly dated at 8 years old... and even back then it looked old and busted compared to contemporary, professionally made 3D games of the same period. It looked bad then, it looks worse now. On the important matter of pricing and value for gamers, there's a lot going on here with monetisation, so this really shouldn't be considered a truly free product because of that. There's no initial download price, but the developer was charging $15 USD for this. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It seems like a nice gesture for the game to have no up-front cost anymore, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. This is also a bit of a slap in the face to anyone who showed enough questionable judgement to pay money for this... nobody got refunded. Furthermore, the developer has their hand out for a $5 USD "donation" for this as you're expected to give them money for soundtrack DLC (that's already in the game) from Steam to "support" the "developer"... digital panhandling. Like the homeless guys who splash dirty water on your windscreen at the traffic lights. No thanks. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 130 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB shows this peaked at only 10 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Given that this free game won't increase your game collector count, is it worth your time to add it to your library? Nope. I didn't have to pay for this, but I still feel like I got scammed.

Towards the Pantheon is a semi-open world turn-based RPG in which you take on the role of Freyja, a mute woman that's has been tasked with undertaking a long journey Towards The proverbial Pantheon with the company of a talking cat, a ghost and a cyborg woman, with the objective of taking out some unspecified evil being who raised an army of zombies to conquer the picturesque world serving as the backdrop to the game's story. Gameplay-wise, the 4 playable heroes don't have a lot to offer in terms of individual customization, given the lack of body equipment or weapons, the rather limited selection of skills, and the fact that there aren't many status conditions to inflict, but I do like how each of the characters has a different method for managing their mana, and I appreciate the skill tree progression system. To compensate for the lack of character depth, the developer put together a card collection mechanic, in which if you have the right combination of cards you can perform a variety of super duper OP spells. There are a solid number of combinations to experiment with, but this system results eventually in the disappointing realization that by the end of the adventure it becomes almost pointless to focus on properly building your party when buying cards is so cheap and finding powerful combinations requires little to no effort, rendering null all the levelling made in the first two thirds of the game. Aesthetically, the soundtrack is not bad at all, in both quantity and quality, composed by the game's author himself, and much of the pixel art is pleasing to the eye and at least decently animated, but in almost every aspect of Towards the Pantheon's aesthetic it is plagued by a certain cheapness that detracts from the overall picture. All of these little flaws that hinder the presentation, if taken individually, are nothing to write home about, but when put together I think they lower the average experience by a lot. The weirdest thing about the whole game, and I apologize for any potential spoilers, is how there is this super elaborate lore regarding different races living together, with a vast and developed geography, with many NPCs that have interconnected subplots, and there is a lot of literature scattered around various buildings that tells us about the past of this world, that already in its present day has so many moving elements, even between the 4 playable heroes there are a ton of interactions, both optional and in the main dialogues... but then, when it comes to perhaps the most important aspect of all, the main villain, not only do you have no idea who he is until the very last moment, but you don't even know his name once you come face to face with him. He has the sprite of a generic zombie in his base form and we don't even learn his motivations before getting to kill him. I've never seen such a disparity in quality between the various narrative aspects of a single video game. Not only that, but towards the end I realized that we don't fight one of his soldiers even once, EVER. They just serve as NPCs that hang around in the various cities and have the same 3 sentences repeated in a loop dozens of times, but they do not pose any serious threat to the protagonists. Again, never seen anything like this. Towards the Pantheon isn't terribly challenging and can be completed in around 6-7 hours, depending on how much of the secondary content you want to complete. Would I recommend it? Maybe, but I would also recommend to not to set your expectations too high.
good game
I want to like it but it's too simple--there isn't enough true choice in the game. I made it through getting the second character and a boss; combat has no type advantage afaik. Leveling up meant working towards the next special node, no real choice. Cute game, good for newer gamers!
