As most Touhou games are, this fanmade shoot 'em up sports nail bitingly difficult screenfuls of bullets. As an added twist, stages rotate from top-down to head-on directions, built in Unreal Engine. Now that the game is accessible at no cost, there's no reason not to give it a spin.

Pros
✅ Difficulty selection: Easy / Medium / Hard ✅ Three stages, two on-rails and one multi-screen arena ✅ Regenerating HP with counter mechanic to tank hits, provided sufficient MP ✅ Entirely free
Cons
❌ Limited number of enemies, likewise of little variety ❌ You can only face two directions, even though enemies come from all sides ❌ Continues revive you from checkpoints with almost no HP, except before bosses. Could hinder newer players from making progress ❌ Only an hour's worth of content, unless aiming for high scores In case you're unfamiliar with it, Touhou project is a series of SHMUPs that started from a solo developer and blossomed into the largest known arcade shooter series, with many of its related games made by humble fans. Multi Scroll Shooting is a classic example of an average entry, starring Konpaku, one of its many female characters. There doesn't appear to be any lore to enjoy here, merely the excitement of weaving between impossibly narrow gaps between bullets and enemies. Contrary to other SHUMPs, there are no alternate characters, and no powerups to collect or customize play. Konpaku comes with a 5-prong fan of wave bullets, fired directly in her line of sight. You can flip 180 degrees to handle any pesky surprises, but you can't seem to face any other directions. Her HP regenerates slowly over time, provided you don't get hit. If you do, a shield appears for a couple milliseconds, giving you the option of taking the damage or countering with a special, which fires off a gigantic crescent, both dealing heavy damage and erasing all hazards in her way. The special bar slowly regenerates over time, just like her HP. There are actually two variations of the attack, and you'll need to compete the tutorial to understand their usage. (I actually completed the game only using counter, whoops!) The game adds an extra dimension not often seen in shooters, being behind the character's back. It isn't used often, and can initially be confusing, since it's not entirely clear where the hitboxes are for explosions and the like. It's still a welcome addition to keep things fresh, since SHMUPs as a whole tend to suffer from being overly identical. Two stages follow the standard scrolling formula, culminating in bosses with unique threats to overcome. The first is a giant jellyfish that spawns drones, and the second is an evil version of your character, who not only uses your abilities, but some very dangerous screen-wide attacks. There's also a bonus stage that's a giant open field with enemies from every corner, that gets extremely chaotic very quickly, sure to please challenge seekers on Hard mode. While we could dissect the the game a bit further, it's a fan project that's had its price removed for all to play. What's not to like? Give it a try if you're inclined, it's a worthy diversion and one of the decent free games on Steam. Achievement Hunters: Complete every stage on any difficulty. Continues are allowed, but that doesn't mean it's easy. Expect to die while learning the patterns, and watch out for the low HP on revival that often leaves you no room for error. Though it depends on skill, ~30mins to 100% is possible.

The original Touhou series is much better than this production.

Touhou Multi Scroll Shooting's main gimmick is its plethora of perspectives. During levels, you'll dynamically switch between a horizontal view, birds-eye view, a Space Harrier-esque view from the back of your character and free-roaming areas that are also viewed from the side. It's as strange as it sounds, difficult to get used to but strangely appealing at the same time. While the bullet patterns didn't blow me away, the game is alright for the extremely low price point. Be warned that Normal Mode is already really brutal when compared to what usually counts as "normal" in Touhou games. For some reason, the Extra Stage is less challenging than the main game. That's a twist...
This is an honest review from a person which really love Touhou Games and this game is a short game, so i'll keep my points short and try to get it across as fast as i can. The game have a cool concept and gameplay but there just are too many downsides. First of all, the game doesn't run properly on my PC on higher dificulties because of poor opmitization, and even though it has a good gameplay, it has really poor graphics, the fairies are really ugly and unpleasant to look at, the background of stage 1 it is horrendous, stage 2 kind of fix this problem but the fairies are still ugly as hell, and the Original SoundTracks of this game is not all that bad, but not great either, the remixes are kinda cool tho. I don't want to be too harsh on this game because i had fun in the half an hour that i played of it, but i wouldn't recommend it to any of my friends because of the graphics, lackluster Danmaku and not really fun OST. The pros of Touhou Multi Scroll Shooting: It is a free game, so you can try it and just never play it again (that's what i kinda did it) but it still has a lot to improve upon to, but only because of it short duration and free access to play, i would say it to give it a try if you liked a game like Azure Reflections and like to try indie experimental games in general. (I still wouldn't recommend to my friends) Looking forward to play the next game.
Touhou Multi Scroll Shooting is a lazy 2D retro shoot 'em up made by using someone else's IP and slapping some assets onto a basic Unreal shmup engine. Unsurprisingly, a game made in such a lazy, derivative way is of extremely poor quality, and has no value or merit as a serious PC game. This is an unabashed, lazy ripoff of Touhou Project (Copyright ZUN, 1997). Many lazy "amateur" developers don't pay attention to their obligations under copyright law, and often steal the ideas of actual, real game developers without credit, such as the "developer" here has done. At this stage no legal action has been taken by ZUN against the "developer" here, but it's never off the table, as previous copyright law cases have shown. Now, it's true that ZUN has in the past permitted some limited derivative use of his copyrighted work, but only for non-commercial use. While this game is currently without any price, the developer was violating ZUNs copyright by using Touhou Project for commercial purposes without permission. This is not okay! Putting aside the unethical intellectual bankruptcy of stealing someone else's copyright works for profit, this is also breaking that unwritten law of stealing other people's game ideas... you should at least try to do better than the game you're ripping off. Touhou Multi Scroll Shooting is considerably worse than Touhou Project. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The developers didn't design the game for modern gaming PCs, as such the display resolution caps out at 1080p, a very low resolution that became mainstream back in 2006 and became obsolete when 4K entered the mainstream in 2014. The game simply won't look right on modern gaming displays due to this failure on the part of the developers. Touhou Multi Scroll Shooting didn't appeal much to the people who own a copy of the game, either. It has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the game didn't really capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for finishing the first level, trivial to get, but less than 32 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game. Hardly a success story, gamers just weren't all that interested in the game. The poor quality of this game is also reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 3 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. The game is currently free, but the developers were charging money for it. Nothing speaks more to a developers belief in themselves and their product than making their game available for everyone without remuneration, but this is also in some ways an acknowledgement that the game failed to achieve any commercial success (unsurprising due to the quality issues). It's a shame in this case that the implementation is below the minimum standards a dedicated PC game should offer to enthusiasts. The quality here is simply too low for me to recommend, even for free.
Profile Features Limited!
Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
Developer Response!
The developer has weighed in to inform everyone they didn't read the Developer Usage Rules for Steam "partners", or they deliberately ignored the part where Valve says:
Though it may be tempting, not every review needs to be responded to. A developer response will frequently draw more attention than the original statement, potentially turning a small issue into a much larger community discussion. It's also not a good idea to use this feature to refute customer opinions. Your direct attention can be seen as validation or a defensive attempt to silence your customers.
The developer insists they're not breaching this copyright license agreement: https://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Touhou_Wiki:Copyrights You know, the license terms that ZUN placed on his wholly owned Touhou Project intellectual property. The license that specifically states you can't sell derivative works based on his IP for profit, you absolutely cannot sell such works on app stores and other marketplaces, as the developer was doing... deliberately breaching a copyright agreement and using someone else's IP for profit! The license is very plain in this regard, and the "developer" of this crap bit of IP infringement decided laws don't matter and breached the license. For money. Unacceptable. The developers only excuse? Other people committed copyright infringement for profit, in breach of many laws in many regions, so therefore it's okay if I do it. Nothing in the developers pointless breach of Valve guidelines changes any of the important facts of my review. The impetus of my review is unchanged. I cannot recommend this game to anyone. Absolutely don't reward copyright thieves.
