About
Touhou: Fading Illusion is a visual novel set in Touhou Project universe that comprehensively describes Gensokyo and its inhabitants. Get ready to meet many of the series' iconic characters and travel to various locations in the Underworld, Gensokyo, Heaven, and even Outside World!
Throughout the ages, excessive curiosity has had a cruel cost. Once, the urge for the unknown made humans superior to animals, but the fear caused by this urge gave birth to the youkai, creatures that rose above mankind itself. Although both species have managed to find a way to coexist peacefully, even today modesty is still not in high favour. While technology is advancing at a rapid pace in the Outside World, the Gensokyo sages are falling deeper and deeper into the illusion of their own power, not realising that there may be something very different, deep, and extremely dense that even they should not touch. With each passing day, the prospect of its coming to light is gradually becoming a question of time.
Reimu is enjoying a warm spring day at her shrine, but her rest is interrupted by Yukari, who, in her manner, shows up unexpectedly and gives the shrine maiden an urgent task: Yukari wants Reimu to follow Sumireko at the festival at the Myouren Temple. The matter concerns the Hakurei Barrier, so Reimu has no choice but to go to the base of her rivals and hope that in the evening, Yukari deigns to explain everything that is happening.
Suitable for people unfamiliar with Touhou Project! A brief introduction to the universe in the free Prologue and an extensive in-game dictionary will keep newcomers from getting lost.
Non-linear plot! You have access to many choices that can dramatically change the plot. Currently, you can play Prologue, the first three days of the Destitute Chapter and the first day of the Underworld Chapter. That's about 10-15 hours of reading.
Journey through the vast world of Touhou Project! Visit the Former Hell, Netherworld, various parts of Gensokyo and even beyond!
Over 50 characters from Touhou Project series! You will definitely find someone you'll like.

Amazing plot and unique routes. Game explains a lot of canon touhou lore(including manga and even points on exact chapters of events mentioned) but has it's own dark atmosphere. Many questions are being answered further in another routes so to know whole picture of story happening on the screen you should at least finish 80% of routes but still game has a lot for player to still theorize about some details. Overall it's one of the best touhou fanworks i have ever seen. Personally i would like more references to touhou print works except mangas like "A Beautiful Flower Blooming Violet Every Sixty Years" also has alternative name "Seasonal Dream Vision" or "Perfect Memento in Strict Sense.". I will buy every next DLC.

good use of renpy

(I am writing this from a fresh perspective after finishing, do note that my opinions can change, and nothing is entirely black or white nonetheless) First impressions?: It's fine, some things I hate and some things I love but the good isn't seeming to outweigh the bad quite yet, and I really just cannot recommend for anyone to really invest in this, at least for now with the state it is in. It certainly has potential but that's the most I can say. I like the overall presentation of everything, generally pretty fresh, and I also haven't seen anything animatic-like coming from VNs to portray anything related to what's actually happening, so that was nice. I really like the accessibility of it all, the Dictionary feature is pretty useful, and proves to be also be a lot more needed nowadays, as TOUHOU has perpetuated back into being popular again, for the 20th time, again..... Dialogue feels pretty unnatural and overall just looks like they were trying to cram in the Dictionary notes inside of it, but I guess taking into consideration the types of writing I've seen from similar indie VNs, it is on the less awful side. Dislike the fact that its a VN, which is surprising considering I like VNs for the most part, but again just ties back into my point about how they wrote dialogue, everything just makes it feel so flat (Even if the visuals are good, you can't forget the novel part) And on the topic of that, the writing feels very "regiony" It leans into the Japanese culture it takes place around, which isn't necessarily a bad thing even though I have my gripes with it from a fangame perspective, but I find the execution to be super cheesy to be completely honest (I REALLY don't get how relevant the mention of what Reimu is eating provides at all to the scenario that Yukari wants to steal some of it other than taking up space of text for no reason.) and anything that DOESN'T lean super heavily into that (like the inclusion of that ancient ass Bepis meme) feels even more forced somehow? I obviously don't need to explain how choosing Bepis over literally anything else you could name a soda to avoid copyright instantly dates it back 15 years even though this hasn't come out, and problems with tonality and groundedness that causes, but damn dude. I will say that I do like the music and art out of this game; it does try and maintain a general consistency within its main VN style but the times whenever it does make any stylistic switches I really enjoy it. My only criticism within both those aspects would be the fact the music also tries to do that, but ultimately remains largely inconsistent, where slight inconsistency adds freshness within the art, I am super opposed to it within the music side of things. (for my creds, I'm an audio engineer, producer, etc, anything working within sound.) I get that the music within the official TOUHOU takes an eastern-western approach (mixing of different elements, styles, genres, and putting them into one OST,) but to my knowledge the game doesn't really deliver on that even when its pretty clear that's at least something that they're trying to do, and that mainly shows with how they don't really keep some type of consistency within the ways in which they make the music (which is my main point with this criticism.) It seems like they cant really find that balance within the eastern-western approach that ZUN uses and it definitely shows within the music, whether that be differing amounts of quantizing or "machineifying" between different tracks, differing quality of VSTs between tracks, taking a more eastern approach instead of being more balanced within the actual writing of the music (and instrumentation not changing even despite whenever they take a western inspired approach to writing anything.) All of that really just adds up to be a pretty lackluster imitation of ZUNs overall style, I generally wouldn't have as much of a problem with it if they did something more their own style, but I would appreciate if it were more true to how ZUN does it, since obviously there has to be a lot less degrees of separation considering its a fan game and not something loosely based off of the main media. REALLLYYY don't appreciate the use of generative AI (c'mon guys.) Game has been in development (as it says on the storefront) for 3 years, which should be more than enough time to deliver more than a prologue, 2 chapters, and only really consistently releasing bundles of the OST. I get game development takes time and more so on the indie side of things, but you'd expect more out of something that demands more, especially from VNs, even having to buy the OST in bundles anyway or the 10$ per DLC that adds up to 70$ (as 7 chapters are slated for release) shaped elephant in the room is pretty insane from most gaming standards, and I just don't quite get yet how exactly deserving of that treatment this game is Also, while looking at the reviews, apparently this game doesn't follow ZUNs guidelines as it pertains within commercial works, so I would be very careful to actually spending money on the game anyway
