Rome 2 (with Divide et Impera mod) is the definitive total war experience. While the base game is a bit too casual and might as well reward random clicking on lower difficulties, DEI adds layers of immersion, trade-offs and complexity that make your choices meaningful (instead of just receiving infinity buffs and bonuses like the base-game without trade-offs). DEI battles can be a slog, but provide far more tactical nuance than the base game. You can add sub mods to bring the battle duration closer to the base game if time is a factor. The supply and area of recruitment systems mean you have to plan your moves and buildings carefully. Politics is essentially a means to avoid civil wars or deal with them efficiently when they inevitably arise. There's a decent amount of depth to character and family management, which is good. As with every total war game, siege battles are atrocious. Do not play them unless you like a buggy mess. And if you're bored with DEI, you can always try out several other overhaul mods which transport you to different eras, introduce different mechanics and all the rest of it. Without fail, I keep coming back to Rome 2 year after year, month after month. The franchise completely fell apart with the saga titles, but older titles are more alive than ever because of mods. Modern CA is not a good games studio (punto e basta), but their older games up until Attila were good, even though campaign mechanics from R1 were progressively removed for some odd reason. If ancient warfare, conquest and empire expansion is up your alley, Rome 2 Divide et Impera is for you. Try it.

finished my roman playthrough and really just a great ancient warfare type game, i'm not sure what to say here very well optimized, i have a lower-mid range PC and it runs very well even with full 2000 - 2000-ish battles, graphics were mildly better than i expected, really fun to just play battle mode too if you don't want to do a campaign, it takes time and patience if you're new to tactics and such from this period, but it's very worthwhile and satisfying to learn and experiment with the game, hence battle mode if you're new and want to just see how each unit works in combat. this game had piqued my interest so much i even found myself searching up tactics, units and formations and allat just to improve (dont do economic victory for your first playthrough, i guarantee you'll miss atleast one requirement in economic victory by the late-game, and by that time; you'll realize you missed your last opportunity to finish that requirement a longgg time ago to complete that requirement) great nation-building game overall and really enjoyed every hour and battle so far, worth the price and i'd recommend trying out total war atilla if you want a more hardcore, apocalyptic, less beginner-friendly experience,

AI armies have double the movement points than the player and they can recruit far more than you can too. Lost all but Rome within 5 turns of game start. What a joke of a game.
