Throne and Liberty is a big free to play MMORPG that puts a lot of its focus on large scale battles, guilds and building a character around different weapon combinations. I play in the world of Solisium, where I can follow the main story, explore the open world, fight monsters, take on bosses and slowly build up my character. What caught my attention most is that I do not pick a traditional class at the start. Instead, I use two weapons together and build my character around the abilities and equipment I choose. That gives me quite a bit of freedom when I am working out how I actually want to play. The world itself is one of the strongest parts for me. Solisium is a big seamless world with forests, deserts, caves, cities and plenty of places to explore, and the changing weather and time of day actually affect parts of the gameplay. I also really like the morph system, since I can transform into different creatures to travel around the world instead of simply running everywhere. It sounds like a small thing, but being able to turn into animals and other creatures gives travelling a bit more personality. There are also gathering, fishing, cooking and housing systems, so I can take a break from fighting without feeling like I have completely left the game behind. Combat is more complicated than it first looks. Since I can combine two weapons, I have to think about how their abilities work together instead of just choosing whatever has the highest damage. There are also different progression paths and a large number of possible builds, so I can spend a lot of time improving the details of my character. The actual combat can feel a little slow compared with a proper action RPG, especially when I am fighting weaker enemies, but I like it more once I am dealing with stronger enemies where positioning, abilities and timing start to matter more. The group content is probably where Throne and Liberty makes the biggest impression on me. I can take part in six player dungeons, solo dungeons, open world bosses, raids and larger guild activities. The castle sieges are particularly impressive because they can involve hundreds of players fighting over a castle, with things like siege golems and different routes into the fortress. Guild battles and territory control also give me something much bigger to work towards than simply making my own character stronger. The biggest weakness for me is that the game can become a lot to keep up with. There are equipment upgrades, different currencies, activities, daily tasks, dungeons, guild content and plenty of other systems competing for my attention. I can enjoy that when I am in the mood to really commit to an MMORPG, but it can also make the game feel like another job if I try to keep up with everything. The free to play structure is something I have to be aware of too, since the game contains in game purchases. I do not mind having optional purchases in a free game, but I prefer being able to focus on the actual game without constantly thinking about the store. I also think Throne and Liberty works better when I have a clear reason to play it. If I am just wandering around killing random enemies, the combat and progression can start to feel repetitive. When I have a dungeon to finish, a boss to prepare for or guild activity coming up, the whole system feels much more worthwhile. There is a huge amount of content here, but I do not think every part of it is equally exciting, and some of the quieter progression can feel like I am simply increasing numbers so I can increase them again later. Overall, Throne and Liberty is a much better MMORPG than I expected, mainly because of how much there is to explore and work towards. I really like the weapon system, the world, the creature transformations and especially the huge guild battles. At the same time, the amount of progression systems can become overwhelming and the combat does not always feel as exciting as the scale of the game suggests. I still think there is a lot to enjoy here if I am willing to commit to a long term MMO, especially when I get involved with the larger group content. Rating: 7.7/10

GOTY!
