One of the best games of this style I've ever played and the others was 1991 Heart of China (GOG only at present and original format so looks VERY old school - crap) This game is clever and has a guided direct path (I think - repeatability is low I think = though this new remaster of the graphics may entice me) Play it - it is lovely and fun.
I devoured the first half and it was shaping up to be one of my favourite games ever...and then the second half came and it is one of the worst things I've ever played. **Note: I did not play the remastered version as I didn't know if anything was changed in the story or voice actors and wanted to try the original. The game was super glitchy and didn't save a bunch of times and had some weird faces & movements. I also triggered a major event in the first chapter without meeting 2 characters and discovering some things so I had to go back to a previous file. I do not know if that is fixed in the remastered but I won't hold it against the game in my review either way** PROS -point and click -beautiful, fleshed out settings -loved the concept of the plot -I instantly liked and cared about many of the characters -I liked being able to choose what to say in some instances -I personally liked that the tasks seemed more realistic than "here are 100 puzzles we dropped into a mystery that make no sense other than the developers wanted to make a puzzle", but if you're wanting puzzles, this isn't the game for you. CONS -While the scenes are beautiful, there is a lot of passing scenery in the background when you are on the moving train. I had to cover up parts of the screen at time because it was bothering my eyes and making me a bit motion sick (though since it was a limited point and click, it was still playable for me, unlike games where the user can move 360) -Plot holes -Turned into a bit of a soap opera in moments, and there could have been better motivations for things. -The narrative structure got repetitive and dull. **Spoiler on game structure ahead**
You play the events of the game twice, from different POVs. It made me less interested and the game feel too long
-Despite being wholly less interested in the second half, I hated the end of the game rand it ruined the entire game for me and made me feel like I wasted my time and money, despite getting hours of gameplay. ****WARNING: The following spoils the end of the game!!!*****
The game relies on deceiving the player, even though you're playing in the first person. You choose what to say, you have thoughts, you write journal entries, meanwhile you are the Raven for the first half of the game. I had a brief thought during that time that I hoped they weren't going to do something stupid like that, and then they did. I wasn't impressed and it made me hate the character and the game. It's not even that the Raven escapes, I could have potentially been ok with that, depending on how it is played out, but not when you're lying for no other reason than to hope to say "gotcha!" to the player. A twist like that works in a third person book or movie, but not when you are literally that character, and not just misleading but straight up lying just to try to get the person playing. Even the game description lies. And then the events of end game and the escape are never actually explained, it just ends. And the characters who I still cared about at that point and wanted to see happy, you are left in the dark about. Ugh, I hated it so much and wish I could warn people, and don't know how to do that without spoiling it.
wow. another wonderful game from King Art. Highly recommend it.
This version of the game was bundled in with the purchase of The Raven Remastered, so I decided to give it a try. The story is a clever homage to Agatha Christie that gets a little convoluted towards the end. The locations are nicely rendered and the music is great. I thought the characters looked a little creepy at times. The puzzles at the beginning are logical and solvable, but tend to get frustrating towards the end of the game. I played with mouse and keyboard. I encountered many glitches involving disappearing characters and animations locked in a loop. Many forced me to restart from a previous saved game. Often the hotspot for a required object is some distance from the object itself. A puzzle towards the end of the game would not unlock until I entered the incorrect solution. I spent a good third of my time searching the discussion boards for fixes. None of these problems were encountered when I played the Remastered version. The Raven is a well crafted mystery that's worth solving. I highly recommend playing the Remastered version instead of this one. If you do decide to play this version, save your game often!
