Experienced on the Meta Quest 3 and HP Reverb G2
You can view my full review here: https://youtu.be/HPIwZ9snkAo The Phoenix Gene VR is a narrative-driven arcade on-rails shooter. You basically hold your Phoenix with your motion controllers and move it from one hand to the other, like a marionette. It has Xortex-like gameplay. The game seems to be a straight port of the Quest version. So graphics are low polygon. There are a total of 8 total levels. Campaign takes 3-4 hours, depending on skill level. You can choose difficulty and also room-scale options that increase the challenge. It can be a nice workout a the higher room-scale options. Game is running on the Unreal Engine 4.2. Game was running a steady 90 fps on my RTX 5090. I did not experience any serious issues or bugs. You can play seated (small room-scale option) or full room-scale (large room-scale option). Please note that using HP Reverb G2, I had to edit button configuration in Steam VR, I published my setup). A Must-Play VR Experience – The Phoenix Gene Soars The Phoenix Gene is a triumph. I looked them up and made by a small team this is a hidden gem in Indie VR. Immediately transported into a beautifully crafted sci-fi world that feels alive, what I love in The Phoenix Gene is the blend of action, storytelling, and VR mechanics. The controls feel intuitive and responsive, making movement and combat incredibly satisfying. Whether you're dodging incoming fire, strategically navigating environments, or engaging enemies, the gameplay feels fluid and empowering rather than overwhelming. The narrative is beautiful... Instead of feeling like a simple shooter, it feels like you're playing a central role in a larger sci-fi epic. The pacing keeps things exciting without feeling repetitive. On the technical side, the performance is smooth and optimized. The developers must have clearly paid attention to comfort and accessibility, which I think would make it enjoyable for both us seasoned VR players and newcomers. Overall, The Phoenix Gene is thrilling, imaginative and surprising. It showcases the true potential of immersive gaming when put together by people who are using their talents and imagination rather than high budget slickness. If you’re looking for a VR title that combines heart-pounding action with compelling storytelling and good mechanics, this is absolutely one to play. So glad I came across it. Highly recommended! 🚀
Just started playing and it's been very fun so far. Good intro to VR gaming.
The Phoenix Gene is an on the rails VR game, where you are constantly in motion but in control of a Phoenix name FireStorm, who is here to rescue Jackie from a company that is up to no good. With tons of action, intense boss fights and interactive cinematic sequences, this game gripped me from start to finish. The Phoenix Gene is great to play while seated with settings for comfort to make it more accessible if things are out of reach, along with a brilliant narrated story with great voice acting all the way through. This game is also very graphically pleasing to the eye, and has great music throughout. Quick reactions are needed with this one though. As you progress through the story, you gain more abilities to fight the enemies, but things get more and more intense! You have to combine good skill with excellent co-ordination, which in my case, I don't really possess, so retrying the levels I struggled on a couple of times, got me through without an issue. I've really enjoyed playing through the whole game from start to finish, and at the end, you are then rewarded with extra challenges, but you have to make it through the story first, then you can really test your skills and see if you can make it to 100% completion! Brilliant game. I highly recommend!
Super cool concept. Feels like starfox in VR. It brought back the nostalgic feeling I love from starfox. It was a blast to fly with the dragon like phoenix character. Really dig the the narrative and soundtrack as well!
This isn't the normal style VR games that I play, but I found it very entertaining. The tutorial was quick and simple, giving me a good grasp of gameplay mechanics. I like that even at level one it kept me engaged because I newer knew what was going to happen next. The original mechanics were fun, it really felt like flying a toy around that could shoot fireballs. Sometimes it felt like I might have needed a bigger space to play in, but that didn't really interfere with having fun.
Played tons on Quest, real unique experience. Steam version looks better. Great story, amazing soundtrack
The Phoenix Gene was a fun and energetic game that kept me moving and shooting. I liked dodging those blasts, and at some point I even jumped up over an obstacle while firing. It has some cool game mechanics that I haven't experienced in other games, so it was nice to get into something new. Also the dragon that I get to control is an extension of my hands since it follows. As for graphics I think it's bright and vibrant. The level designs are also interesting. I have limited space in my room so I also like the fact that I can use stationary scale, but I have tried the room scale gameplay and it was a lot more immersive because I felt I was in it. I'd recommend it!
Super fun! I owned this previously on Quest and repurchased while moving my library over to Steam. Originally I had been concerned about motion sickness but the way you have a more consistent motion and control the Phoenix with your hands is a very cool mechanic.
Absurdly fun, way more than it deserves to be. Who knew flying around in a huge dragon would be so fun
