The Mermaid Mask

It's a decent game, but not a detective game. At all. So if that's what you want to play, this is not for you. It's a point-and-click visual novel. The story is interesting and the characters are fantastically written. Absolutely horrible UX design though, why is ESC controlling full-screen? Why do I have to click to open the inventory, to open the settings, to return to the main menu, to exit the game? It should be ESC > Quit to desktop. Puzzles I found quite tedious and not that enjoyable. 10/10 for story, 6/10 for gameplay. I had a few bugs throughout the game that caused it to freeze during the accusations (so I had to ALT-F4 and restart the convos) and stopped the dictaphone from playing audio back to me, but I seem to be the minority in experiencing bugs. Overall, 7.5/10. Clearly has had a lot of love and care put into the game, and you can really feel that.

O ponto principal do jogo é a história do assassinato do capitão Mortuga, e o jogo te deixa apreensivo e curioso para saber o que aconteceu com ele, cada pista que você pega no jogo (que são bastante) são importantes para te descobrir a trama completa. O design dos personagens é incrível, junto com uma boa narrativa deles que faz com que você se conecte minimamente com cada um dos suspeitos do crime. Ótima dublagem dos personagens e que combina perfeitamente com os personagens do jogo. The Mermaid Mask é um ótimo jogo para que curte uma vibe mais detetive nos videogames.

Very satisfying. Even better characters than before, plus the excellent dialogue and voice acting that I expected from this series. I was smiling through most of it and laughed out loud at a few really solid jokes. Like its predecessor, some of the reasoning and solutions feel awkward and require significant suspension of disbelief. But unlike Tangle Tower, none of that was enough to sour me on the game. The mystery here was good enough. The story surrounding it was better. The characters and voice acting, though, are PHENOMENAL and worth the price of admission. I want more. They should do an animated series, like a modern-day Scooby Doo. I'd watch.

Pros: -Dreamlike art, surprisingly colorful and varied for the inside of a submarine. -Spooky music. -The quirkiest cast of characters yet in this series. I didn't want any of them to be the murderer. -An unlimited supply of witty banter between Grimoire and Sally. -A wide variety of fun mini-puzzles. -Pairs well with recently having read 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Cons: -Similarly to Tangle Tower, the mystery is solved by an increasingly farfetched series of reveals, rather than logical deduction. I wish the developers would go back to the original Detective Grimoire where it was actually possible to guess the killer. I hope the part where an author is struggling to write a sequel under the pressure of past success is not autobiographical, because I'll always want more entries...
