Great artwork, voice acting, story, and gameplay!
I feel fortunate to have had steam recommend me this game - unbelievably charming and a joy to play from start to finish. the puzzles are fun and interesting, the story and characters are well-written, the voice acting and music are both great, and the art ties it all together. can't say enough good things about this game. looking forward to playing more from this studio.
I LOVED tangle tower and I was so excited to know SFB was making another similar game! And it's just as amazing as I imagined!! It has all the pros of the last game - incredible orchestral soundtrack, unique, memorable characters, enthralling story, creative puzzles - and somehow makes it even BETTER with new ways to interact with evidence, even more commentary from the suspects, and plenty of callbacks to the previous games. It was so much fun trying to piece together all the connections and what it could all mean. But even without any knowledge from the previous games, this one still presents a captivating mystery that stuck with me even when I wasn't playing. SERIOUSLY recommend!
This is why I love the 'Detective' games. Unique memorable characters, a good mystery with plenty of twists and foreshadowing, a delightly artsyle supported by an equally delightful soundtrack. It was a long wait for this game, but I look forward to seeing where this goes next!
Phenomenal mystery game all the way through. Had me absolutely hooked.
Felicia! When I catch you Felicia! Another great continuation in the series. This game really benefits from you having played the pervious one, Tangled Tower, however it's not necessary but there will be clear easter eggs you won't get. And the seemingly continuation of the mystery around Felicia is something I hope they keep going. There's many clever things to be done with her character and the mystery around her and I'm excited to see where the devs go with it should they choose too.
A wonderful leap forward in narrative, design, and execution from Tangle Tower. It was exciting to see how the team has honed in their craft. Every conversation point is well written and the game is without any generic statements or wasted space. The chemistry between the two detectives is great and makes for a fun journey while solving the mystery. The Mystery this time is the biggest level up since Tangle Tower. That game had a great mystery box, that was unfortunately lackluster once opened. The premise to the murder this time is a wonderful closed mystery room that actually delivers and a superbly crafted and well delivered resolution that exceeds expectations as a murder-mystery narrative.
yes
In a dev stream showing gameplay of the demo, one of the developers (Adam, I believe) referred to Mermaid Mask as something like "an artist['s] game", and I think that's the best summation there could be for it. The soundtrack, dramatic performances, script, visuals—there is SO much artistry and passion for the various crafts on display here. Not only are the smallest details paid attention to, but some actually matter in the story itself. The creators' enthusiasm for what they have created is so apparent that sometimes the characters themselves can't resist pointing out the apparent poetic meaning of an object or something of the kind. On the detailwork, something I appreciate about the Grimoire series (and SFB games in general) is that there are background elements that are totally optional to investigate, but unlike in many other detective game series, rather that solely dressing they often provide hints at other details of the world. A lot of the dialogue is very funny, sure, but it creates such a feeling of discovery to be able to sniff out a detail that solves or implies something about some trivial question on the side. It's also dearly appreciated that if you present a clue that's technically correct but jumping the gun a bit, rather than just marking it "wrong" the characters will assure you that it will be used in due time. It doesn't particularly matter in that there's no scoring, but it feels satisfying as a player to be recognized for having a solid thought process, even if you aren't saying exactly what the game wants you to. I'd have to marinate on whether I prefer this to Tangle Tower, but the mystery solving is FAR more engaging. There are more puzzles (yay!!!), more clues, and genuinely challenging lines of logic to follow, or at least they average much more challenging than Tangle Tower's. Every character's "suspicion" confrontation feels so much more involved, and pretty much every character makes a compelling suspect and has their own relevant baggage to bring to the table. Unusually for a detective game but true to form for Grimoire, some non-murder-case details are left unexplained, to varying degrees; sometimes it's pretty inferable, sometimes it's simply open. If you expect your mystery games to explain everything, this may be daunting for you (as it was for me initially). However, if you are an artist of any shape, sort, or form, HIGHLY recommend all the same. You just may find your perspective changed.
Hey did you know in the Odessy the sirens didnt tempt Odysseus with sex or whatever, but actually sang about knowledge of the future and the secrets of the universe, and only tying him to the mast kept him from destroying himself in pursuit of knowledge? Hahaha. Yeah.
