the SFB gang has done it again. and even better somehow! as much as i loved Tangle Tower, (and believe me, i did!) this proves to be a fantastic successor in every way imaginable. even better animation, 3D models for clues adding depth to how you can investigate them, more complex and interesting puzzles, and a truly gripping story mixing mystery and mysticism in a most rapturing way. you can play this game without playing tangle tower, but you would get more out of it if you went out of your way and enjoyed all the previous entries in detective grimoires collection. play it now, love it, and tell everyone else to play it too.
it was extremely cool. music and character designs and stories were brilliant.
This was a great experience. As someone who played Tangle Tower, they improved almost every mechanic from it. The pacing is literally perfect, and you never feel like you are making too much or too little progress at a time. Sometimes mystery games can have the detective characters come to a conclusion that seems very sudden and like a stretch, but that rarely, if ever, happens in The Mermaid Mask. All the discoveries you make interconnect seamlessly. Pair that with excellent writing that combines serious and silly elements expertly, and you have a wonderful game. Overall, this might actually be a 10/10 game for me. There were only one or two parts that I felt stuck on
(one of which was a puzzle that expected you to remember a piece of information that you could only see one time)
but it's most certainly possible to get through them without looking it up; it might just take some trial and error. You don't have to have played Tangle Tower before this, and I would say that if you had to pick only one, you should pick this one, but I recommend playing Tangle Tower before this nonetheless.
An absolutely thrilling story from start to finish. I absolutely ADORED the dialogue, and all the characters were so incredibly fun. Absolutely an amazing addition to the Grimoire series of games.
I loved this game. I'm recommending it to everyone I know, whether they like puzzle / detective / mystery games or not. What a fun story! Amazing art and voice acting as always! I know the creators said they're taking a break, which is very well deserved, but I cannot wait for them to release another game. Mermaid Mask was so well done, I'll be talking about it to anyone who stays near me long enough to listen.
Truly a masterpiece
I wanted to write a whole essay of a review, but I had to stop myself. This is downright one of the best written and best made adventure games of the last decade. I am not kidding. The characters are amazing, the writing is absolutely top notch, with a level of depth and content I have rarely seen before. The whole game is constantly intriguing without being filled with pointless red herrings or false leads. I've played the previous two games in the series as well, and each one has been better than the last. Huge congratulations to the dev team!
It was a long wait, but the game was worth it. I played the previous installments with my 10yo kid and he insisted on putting The Mermaid Mask on the wishlist. So we did, and regularly checked on the release date. At last we had a free weekend together, and cracked the game (3 achievements missing...) in 16 hours. The story was really great, everything logically connected, every character with unique quirks and traits. There was a stage where we had to ask everyone about everything, because sometimes the comments pushing the story forward were a bit unexpected. But once all clues were unlocked, in the endgame, all started to fall into place in the most satisfying and logical way, leaving no loose ends. Really wholesome and touching experience, for something disguised as a "detective game". My kid already asks about the next part!
