There is only you, the abandoned remains of a former life and the flourishing nature that feels great in the absence of man. This world is both gloomy and empty, but so incredibly beautiful.
Dark
A part of the world that has always abused it's citizens, made them invisible. We see it in the way that not a single decade goes by without seeing yet another war in that region and soldiers sent to die. Civilians, die twice, at the hands of soldiers come to save them. And then are erased. So the propaganda tape rolls, and so one expects to see games that portray the propaganda and it's untruths. I think it does that quite well actually for the dark brooding mood of the game. A warning.
Translates Poorly
The game mechanics are simple, you have to collect a few items, and explore slowly on foot. Everything is dark, so the thing is to conserve light. That's a hint as well. The game provides very few hints, and the puzzles are probably unsolvable in a hurry without a guide. Made harder because the few hints you do get are not really enough unless you speak Russian and have solved similar puzzles.
Not too Scary
There are a few shadowy moments, but nothing that counts as a scare, the mazes are scary enough just by being dark to be honest. I really never truly figured out the twists and turns of one maze which has you walking in water about a foot deep at times. I think what messes up any realism is how the soundscape and sound effects are often really random. No directional sound and no strictly environmental sounds either. And that's why you don't want to be paying full price at all. I found there is a plugin you can download from LoneDev which fixes my biggest issue with this game and that is the POV and head bob which made me a bit queasy feeling. Conserve light. Grab it on the specials, grab a guide and enjoy the dark mood - for more dark mood games check out this list https://store.steampowered.com/curator/41773079-EmpathyGames/list/91748/
I was on the fence regarding this game, and although it does have some fun aspects, the cons sadly outweigh the pros imho. That said, once you get used to it, you begin to have more fun, only for the game to abruptly end because it's so very short.
PROS
+ Great graphics + The ambience is on point, conveying a feeling of abandonment and regret, probably the game's strongest point + The soundtrack and audio effects in general are commendable + A big enough building and surrounding areas to explore freely and at your own pace + A satisfactory amount of achievements to hunt for + Although the game is very short (if you know what you’re doing, you can clear the entire thing in 20-25 minutes), the asking price is quite low + Two different endings, that require two different playthroughs
MEH
? The story has been made a gazillion times before, nothing surprising let alone groundbreaking here. It does serve the game though, so I guess it's a pass, although the overall message is heavy-handed ? I would have loved to know what the many writings on various walls meant, but I couldn't since the vast majority of them is in Russian. That said, it does add a sense of mystery and adds on the already brilliant atmosphere, so I will let this slide as well
CONS
- There is no manual save feature, and the auto-save checkpoints are few and far between. Which means it's very possible to wander around trying doors and exploring other locations, and collecting items (keys etc.), only to find yourself having lost a considerable amount of progress if you decide you've had enough for one session and quit the game to come back to it later. This was my biggest frustration. If manual saving was possible, I would be willing to let every other con slide and give the game a positive rating - Super clunky movement, with a weird 'sliding effect' whenever you sprint - There is a big delay between mouse movement and flashlight movement, which is frustrating, tiring and can be a bit disorienting too. You eventually get used to it, but this doesn't excuse the error - Running speed is quite slow - The jumping ability is utterly useless. Apparently your character can't jump more than a few inches, which is ridiculous, especially considering that your character doesn't really need to jump anywhere in the entire game - Even with the settings on max brightness, the game is very dark in most indoors areas.
Especially when it comes to the basement area, this makes progressing extremely difficult
- Some puzzle solutions are obscure and don’t make a lot of sense - The English translation (wherever it's available, mostly for documents) is full of grammatical and syntax errors, which unfortunately breaks the immersion quite a bit - A couple of the achievements
the alternate ending and the god of walking simulator
are really hard to get All that said, this is a borderline negative review. The game isn’t by any means bad, it just lacked in certain areas that I personally consider kind of deal-breaking. If you’re all for atmosphere, mystery and beautiful surroundings and sounds, go for it, since it’s really cheap.
As a walking sim, I guess this game is passable. What's that? Story, I hear you ask? What story? ;) The extensive Russian graffiti and signs suggest a post-Chernobyl setting, with the central setting being a building (possibly a school) replete with a murky basement, and outside, a shed of some sort. There is some structure to the sim. You get some keys, a fuse, a switch, all for the express purpose of getting the power up and running so you can play a video reel in the lecture hall. Once that happens you aren't far off finishing the game. Unlike other sims, there isn't much voice over. There are some notes (in English), and there is a small amount of Russian voice over, but for the mostpart it's just you walking around discovering snippets. One feature that the game has is two different endings based on light and dark. It's not something you'd know about, going into your first game... unless you've had a look at the steam achievements beforehand. Essentially, during a second playthrough, you try not to use your torch or your lighter at all, and when outside, avoid sunlight as much as you can. I'll be honest, it's a bit of a balls-up as while you are underground it can get really confusing and it's easy to get lost. I recommend a guide if you're trying to get 100% achieves. ______________ The store page talks about 'incredibly beautiful' but I never really saw any of that. The majority of the game is spent indoors, and the range at which you can travel outdoors is severely limiting. Indoors, however, they did get right. 'Gloomy and empty.' I've played a few games now with this eerie Chernobyl-like setting and I'm not sure it'll ever work to a resounding success. While it does have a few minor puzzles, the rest of the game is sadly a rather forgettable experience. It's right on the fence for me, and while it was tough to decide on, I'll go with a positive.
Two Hours to Finish
