Good
Decisions really carry weight. I played with hidden consequences turned on and I recommend this for a first playthrough, coz every choice feels authentic rather than like checking off options from a guide. The game has no rewind or undo feature, so one accidental click stayed with me permanently. I left that mistake as it happened, and it fit the tone of the story better than reloading an old save would have. The biggest drawback is the character stat system. Earlier choices build traits that unlock or block dialogue options later on.A lot of interesting decisions are simply unavailable without high enough stats. My Sir Brante unfortunately had Diplomacy that was too low, I regularly saw options that fit how I envisioned him, but which I couldn't select. It didnt bother me too much for most of the game, but in the final chapter, where the stakes are highest, this limitation stands out the most.Theres a certain irony to this, cause that mechanical frustration is essentially the theme of the game: you are not always who you would like to be, but rather who your previous choices allowed you to become. It hurts as a player, but as consistency between mechanics and story, it works remarkably well. 8/10
Great story, topped off with replay ability I would highly recommend
The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante is a very well-written story (or multitude of stories) that takes place in a fascinating and unique world. The choices you can make are interesting and worthwhile, and I actually really enjoy the stats system. My only gripe is HOW finicky the requirements for different paths get later in the game. I understand fully that you can't win every battle, but even being strategic with your options, you often juuust barely don't make the cut for one choice, and that causes a cascade of events that leads you to a premature (permanent) death. I really like the game itself, I just wish it had a teensy bit more wiggle room to allow one to actually experience the narrative that they should, rather than getting pigeonholed into something that doesn't feel true to their character.
