Before I played The Last Secret, I had a small pp, no friends, no gf, depression, and no life. These things havent changed, but the game is pretty good

The Last Secret is an unusual visual novel that blends science fiction, mystery, romance, comedy, and puzzle solving into one surprisingly substantial adventure. Developed by TBF and published by TBF and TLS, it takes a more interactive approach than many traditional visual novels. Instead of simply moving through conversations and making occasional dialogue choices, players encounter puzzles, mini-games, relationship decisions, branching outcomes, and numerous opportunities to influence how the story develops. Its presentation is clearly rooted in indie production, but the amount of content packed into the experience makes it an ambitious project. The story revolves around a protagonist whose seemingly ordinary life becomes considerably stranger after unusual mental abilities begin appearing among a group of friends. Matters become even more mysterious with the arrival of a distinctive pink-haired girl connected to the larger events surrounding them. What begins as an almost playful supernatural mystery gradually develops into a broader science-fiction adventure involving secrets, conspiracies, dangerous discoveries, and increasingly serious consequences. Despite these escalating stakes, the writing regularly uses humor and character interactions to prevent the narrative from becoming relentlessly grim. Much of the game's appeal comes from spending time with its varied cast. Characters such as Meilin, Honghong, Karina, Ben Benjamin, and the mysterious newcomer bring noticeably different personalities and perspectives to the group. Their conversations provide the emotional foundation for the mystery while also allowing friendships and romantic relationships to develop. Players can select a male or female protagonist, and romance is flexible enough to accommodate different preferences. Same-gender relationship possibilities are available through the game's rainbow mode, while players who would rather focus entirely on the mystery can avoid romance and continue with the main adventure. The puzzle system gives the experience a stronger adventure-game identity. Players encounter a selection of challenges and mini-games rather than repeatedly using one mechanic. Some require logical thinking and pattern recognition, including challenges based around connecting colored elements while following specific restrictions. These activities create welcome breaks between longer sections of dialogue. At the same time, the developers wisely avoid making puzzle difficulty an unavoidable roadblock. Hints and assistance are available, allowing players who mainly care about the characters and story to continue without becoming trapped by a particular challenge. Choices become increasingly important as the adventure progresses. The game contains eight favorable endings along with numerous bad endings, making experimentation worthwhile. Different romantic choices, decisions, puzzle outcomes, and narrative routes create reasons to return after completing the story. The presence of 40 achievements further encourages players to explore content they might have missed during their initial run. While not every decision completely transforms the plot, there is enough variation to make the player's involvement feel more substantial than simply clicking through a predetermined sequence. Its visual presentation is colorful and approachable rather than technically elaborate. Hundreds of images are used throughout the story to illustrate characters, environments, and important moments. The character artwork has a simple and charming quality that matches the generally playful tone. Players expecting highly animated scenes or the extravagant production values of major commercial visual novels may find it modest, but the consistent artwork serves the storytelling effectively. Music is another important part of the atmosphere. The soundtrack accompanies the game's shifts between comedy, mystery, romance, and more dramatic situations, while vocal tracks add personality to certain moments. The combination of original music and multilingual songs gives the production a distinctive character. Multiple language options also make the adventure accessible to a broader international audience. Steam Deck compatibility is officially categorized as Playable rather than fully Verified. Performance with the default graphics configuration is considered suitable, and the game can run successfully on SteamOS. However, handheld players should expect compromises. Some functionality is not fully accessible through the default controller configuration, touchscreen interaction or a community controller layout may occasionally be useful, and text entry can require manually opening the virtual keyboard. Some interface text may also appear small, while certain prompts can display keyboard, mouse, or non-Steam Deck controller icons. It is therefore functional on the Deck, but the experience is less seamless than a fully optimized handheld release. The Last Secret ultimately stands out through the sheer variety of ideas it combines. It offers a substantial mystery, an eccentric group of characters, optional romance, numerous puzzles, mini-games, achievements, multiple endings, and considerable player choice without demanding a purchase to experience its core content. Some artwork and presentation elements understandably lack the polish of larger productions, and its mixture of serious science fiction with comedy and romance may occasionally produce abrupt tonal changes. Even so, those imperfections are outweighed by its personality and willingness to experiment with the visual novel format. For players who enjoy story-driven games but want more involvement than simply reading dialogue, this is an appealing combination of interactive fiction and puzzle adventure. Its flexible romance system, approachable puzzles, branching conclusions, likable cast, and surprisingly expansive narrative make it easy to recommend to visual novel fans willing to embrace an unconventional indie production.
