"The Last Secret" isn't a game, it's a cringey non-game high school anime club dropout fan-fiction that's been dumped on Steam into the games section. As a visual novel, it doesn't have any gameplay. It's just a lot of clicking through bad, cringe dialogue that no real publisher would ever accept. When people can't get their work published in print, they pay the $100 fee to dump their fan-fiction here instead, where we have to put up with it when looking for things that are actual PC games. Square in the middle of what we expect from garbage Steam Direct e-books, this one tackles the author and his suspiciously underaged looking pink haired imaginary anime girlfriend, prompting us once more to ask why these high school anime club dropout fan-fiction writers are so creepily obsessed with underaged girls. Anyway there's some plot about the author exploring LGBTQIA relationships with his imaginary girlfriend. It's enough to make you throw up. The cringe is extreme. Because this was put together with the Ren'Py e-book construction kit, it didn't require any actual coding or development. It's a tool for failed authors to push their garbage high school anime club dropout fanfictions as games. Just like there's no professional writing here, there isn't any professional software development either. Visual novels/e-books are the worst way to try read a book (and they're always written far worse than real books too). Imagine reading your favorite book, be that War and Peace or The Davinci Code (are you ok??), but you have to click the mouse for every single sentence that appears. You'd hate it. It's a garbage way to try read a book... and even if it wasn't, this still isn't a game. Now imagine that clicking experience, but with utterly cringe anime club fan-fiction writing. If the author had any talent, this would be published in print on bookshelves. Instead, it's here on Steam. This garbage only ended up on Steam because they paid $100 to self-publish since no real publisher would take them. E-books are technically simple, and don't require any of the heavy features that actual cutting edge PC games need... in fact, the whole thing can be done in a web browser. There's no justification for charging money on Steam for what might as well be a webpage. We don't buy gaming rigs to spend money on something Chrome or Firefox could do. A peak of 7 concurrent readers for a free visual novel/e-book is a disaster. Out of 130 million potential gamers, almost nobody was interested. That level of rejection speaks for how badly written this is. To put this into perspective, to satisfy the global demand for this book, you'd only ever need to print 7 copies. That's what failure looks like. While this e-book's free, you can get better quality books and comics for free online or from public libraries. Steam is for PC games. Your gaming rig is not a Kindle or a mobile phone e-book reader. It's impossible for me to recommend things to PC gamers that aren't really games.
