3/5 STARS! The Invincible has a great atmosphere and some genuinely interesting ideas, with a strong sci-fi setting that kept me curious. The visuals are impressive, and the story has some very memorable moments. That said, the pacing and gameplay can feel a little slow at times. Overall, it’s still a great game, especially if your interest is piqued by the aesthetic and setting.
For a walking simulator, it's quite robust. And the game is injected with more choice than what is usually seen in the genre. It's a good looking experience for sure, but there are pacing issues. The story moves forward in an almost stuttering manner – or "one step forward, two steps back" kind of a way, leading to an unsatisfying progression. Some texture bugs here and there, and the engine gets bogged down if you move faster than the game expects.
I am really torn between recommending this or not. On one hand it has really cool visuals and themes. It is an interesting story and the writing is decent, but a bit hand-wavy at times. And the world-building is very intriguing. But on the other hand it is short, rather shallow and a bit clunky to "play". It has several different endings depending on choices, but all of the endings just cut to credits before any of the interesting suggested events take place. It felt incredibly anti-climactic to hit the end of the game... And replaying the end to try the different endings felt like an unsatisfying slog. And I don't think it will offer much replay value, unless you have somehow completely forgotten the plot. My main thought after finishing it has been: "Huh, what a missed opportunity. This could have been amazing"... I just cannot recommend it at the full price. You can find many better story experiences that offer dozens of fun hours for that price. If you can snag it at a high discount percentage(~50% or more), and are OK with it just being a ~6h slightly above average visual novel experience, by all means try it out.
Came for the Game, Left for the Novel.
This is a brilliant adaptation of Stanislaw Lem's novel. It looks amazing, capturing the '60s retro-futurism in all its glory. I still rotate screenshots from it on my desktop; they are striking. It is very faithful to the original mood—the slow, pensive, slightly wistful elegance of Lem's prose translated seamlessly into video game form. Is it a very good story, though? In my opinion, no. The moral has aged pretty poorly, and the science fiction and mystery elements are naïve by modern standards. But if you want a video game adaptation of Stanislaw Lem, you won't find better. And it's gorgeous to look at.
Good game with a good story. This game makes me want to pick up the book it was based off and give it a read. The scenery and stylization is anmazing, and all in all it's a good short linear story game that I'd recommend to give a try.
