The Devil's Whisper

[h1]Never make a deal with the devil... :o[/h1] [i]The Devil's Whisper[/i] is a horror visual novel developed by Madness Way Games and published by Mangotronics. You take on the roles of Amelia and her fellow classmates as they work together on a school festival project. As they're driving on the road and having an argument one night, they end up involved in a car accident, having run over and killed someone very close to them. Afterwards, unexplained events start happening to them, which may very well involve the supernatural. Can Amelia and her friends get out of their situation unscathed or will the worst happen? With the gameplay, it consists of five chapters, each chapter taking on the perspective of Amelia or one of her friends. Numerous choices are presented, and depending on your choices, the character involved will either live or die (for the most part). After the final chapter, you'll obtain one of three endings: The End of the Nightmare (best ending), The Devil's Whisper (neutral ending), or Home Run (worst ending). Plenty of CGs are shown throughout the story. Also, a varied soundtrack is present as well as mostly full-on English voice acting. In addition, there are lots of Steam achievements although they won't count towards a user's global total until the game is out of "Steam is learning about this game". It's probably no surprise for those who read my reviews that I enjoy visual novels that have a heavy story focus, so [i]The Devil's Whisper[/i] caught my interest after reading the Steam store page. With that said, I'll first talk about the story. I like how it starts off, with Amelia talking about her recurring nightmares that she's had ever since she was a child, almost like she's having a premonition of things to come. Then the story switches to a slower, more slice-of-life as Amelia talks to Andrew, her fellow classmate and possible love interest, about the school festival. As Amelia failed to come up with a drawing for the event (even though Andrew was supposed to help out), their homeroom teacher assigns a team to help them out. Funnily enough, that team consists of Amelia, Andrew, Madison (Andrew's twin sister and Amelia's best friend), Conrad (Madison's boyfriend), and Claire (Conrad's ex-girlfriend whom Madison can't stand). The story is a bit slow for a while, but once the car accident happens, that's when things get switched up. I enjoyed reading how all these strange events are occurring for all the characters and they ultimately get put into a life-or-death situation. I like these kinds of stories where unexplained things happen and yet, the characters have to go through their daily lives as normally as possible in order to not appear suspicious. There are definitely heart-stopping moments towards the ends of chapters, and I could only hope that I made the right choices along the way so that the characters would survive. I enjoyed reading the major plot twist that happens in the final chapter and experiencing all three endings, as well as their respective dialogues. As for the characters, they have quite a variety of personalities. For example, Andrew is the generally level-headed leader although he might become reckless and daring if it means saving the ones he cares about. Then there's Conrad, the arrogant, haughty wealthy child who's living on his own due to not wanting to get involved in his parents' conflicts. I don't wish to ramble on for too long, but I liked all the varying personalities, and if all the characters survive, it's interesting to see how they try to work together to solve the mystery of unexplained occurrences and survive. In regards to the art, the sprites and backgrounds are drawn well and colored beautifully. With the music, the tracks are varied, and I enjoyed listening to them. As the story is mostly filled with horror (although there are happier, quieter moments), a lot of the tracks give off that terrified, suspenseful feeling. My favorite tracks would definitely be the the one in the main menu as well as the track for the best ending. Of course, I shouldn't forget to mention that there's English voice acting, which I found to be a treat to listen to. Most of the voiced lines match with the text although I noticed a few discrepancies. However, I felt that the voices fit very well with their respective characters. If I had to make a criticism, it might be that I felt that there were a couple of times that the voices sounded a bit over-the-top, like when the party would be in danger. Still, I can overlook this since plenty of horror, suspenseful movies do the same thing, and I may prefer more subtlety. XD Overall, would I recommend [i]The Devil's Whisper[/i]? If you enjoy visual novels, love horror-filled, supernatural stories with a bit of romance, want choices that actually matter, and/or just want to get all those achievements (at the time of this review, all achievements are now obtainable), then this is totally worth checking out. For the asking price, it's a good deal, especially with the addition of English voice acting. I loved this game! It's so captivating and truly engaging. The storyline is just amazing! I enjoyed the characters from the very first moment till the end. I'm replaying it hehehehe. Super recommended!

I might be a little biased, but I think it's pretty good. ;)

This is a teen horror game that reminds me of The Letter in its setup. There are 5 chapters and you play a different character in each chapter and can survive or not. The horror is very light and not really scary. The game has a good quality overall and stands out because of the good voice acting. Some characters are a bit over-the-top unlikeable (e.g. Conrad or the principal), but it is fine for a small visual novel. There is also a little bit of romance - not much, but it is cute. On the other side, I could have done without the character "breathing" animations. There is constantly some movement on the screen that distracts from the text and I did not like it aesthetically, either. In my opinion, the creator shot himself in the foot with the pricing strategy, since the original launch price was much lower than the current one. I’d still recommend it if you can get it at a discount.
