Mixed with its simplistic gameplay, the game also comes with a decent story. Initial thoughts after checking out the store page is that the game looks like it would be enjoyable. Having played it, I can say that the game ran just fine although the art style is not my favorite. Plot: Story about a young Botanist boy called Bob. From his small village on a peaceful planet, Bob dreams that while he was collecting samples for his next project, his basket was stolen by the roots controlled by the evil Green Queen of the Dark Forest, and the samples were scattered all over the Broken Isles, turning his dream into his worst nightmare. Dragged by the Green Queen into the parallel dimension, Bob faces his biggest fears! Now he must overcome them. Gameplay: A super-simplified gameplay that comes with a bit of weird gameplay and mechanical choices. The base gameplay is super simple with W for moving forward and S for backward, but in a weird choice of key mapping the game went for A for left turn and D for right, which threw me off-guard for a minute there. Choosing A&D for turning is okay, nothing really wrong there, but it felt super weird when combined with the game’s sluggish movement. Since this is a platformer, jumping plays an important role. For the most part, the jump feature works and plays out just fine. There is a double jump feature, which also helps in terms of moving through insanely long gaps. There is a short-suspended time in the air as well, but it seems like an animation issue rather than a feature. Apart from the platformer elements, there are also a few more things to look out for, such as various bugs and creatures that will put you down upon touch, traps everywhere (and some are even hidden), and then there are obstacles, such as spinning blades which are also a thing to look out for! World design: Simple and colorful, but the lighting is dull. Since this is a work in progress, I would like to see how they improve the visuals. There’s a lot of work that still needs to be put into it. Music and Sound effects: Well-selected background music that fits the game nicely. As do the sound effects; nothing really special but they work just fine. Considering all aspects of the Botanist, the game’s a fun one with a lot of potential. Positives: + Decent plot + Fun platformer gameplay + Decent visuals + Well-selected background music + Thoughtfully-crafted platformer elements Negative: - Dull lighting tone - Sluggish and slow movement - Odd key mapping choices A well put-together platformer with an interesting storyline. 5/10 Key provided by the developer/publisher for review purposes. Any opinions expressed are entirely my own! For a start up developer, the game plays great and gives an immersive fantasy vibe. This one sparks joy! Grab it!
Here we have a maiden venture into the world of gaming by Ghost Entertainment. They have attempted to tap into a rather challenging market that is filled with many fan favourites and classic titles. Most of us "Veteran Gamers" will recall the PS1 as the firm favourite for early 3D platform adventure titles, yet here we have a game that is reminiscent in both style, graphics and difficulty as many of those games that we all played years ago. This short game allows you just enough challenge across its levels to keep you interested throughout. Game mechanics are added and adjusted at different stages to keep you thinking, and though they will not beat most competent players, they will still ask that you maintain composure, and it will test your patience. Two game modes are available to attempt; the story mode and a speedrun section. The 8 stages that you must face are considered as one "Game", so when you look at the achievements this must be remembered if you wish to unlock them all. This was the hardest element to overcome, and only the most hardcore of gamers will have the ability and time on their hands to get to the 100% status. The game opens with you controlling Bob, he's a small mushroom boy who's curiosity gets the better of him. As the game progresses, you come across a new friend who is a dragon. Once you have this beast at your side, this adds a whole new layer to the gameplay, and makes you think out of the box. Graphically this game doesn't break the mould, and though it is more polished than many early generation console and PC games, it cannot be considered next or latest generation. The cut scenes are great and reminded me of The Brothers Grimm fairy tales. This whimsical and mischievous presentation continues through the music that accompanies all the action. The sound effects were annoying, I admit I've never been tempted to punch a Mushroom boy before, but Bob pushed my buttons. There are some graphical errors, and you'll find that you get caught on the scenery in every stage. The lack of camera panning in the current build takes some getting used to and makes it hard to plan a route, especially when you have to make a leap into the unknown. With these issues in mind, I still recommend that you give this game a go, especially if you are a fan of old school 3D platform games. I'm sure that the developers will look to expand the games content, and will work on the minor issues that I discovered. With the 2 different modes, and tough achievements to unlock, this is a title that will have people coming back for more. Can you help poor old Bob work his way through this fantasy world? Will your new dragon friend be more help than hindrance? Get yourself a copy of the game and see if you can beat all 8 stages!
The Botanist is a consolesque third person action platformer where you run around a cartoony environment and collect mushrooms and avoid angry mushrooms that don't like you. Sound familiar? At least the protagonist isn't a plumber. One important note is that even though this is an amateur project, it does seem to be sincerely and genuinely made. I couldn't find any flipped assets, plagiarism or any other kind of insincere actions from the developer, but unfortunately genuine intentions alone are not enough to produce a brilliant PC gaming experience. I will say this is at 10 times better than your average Russian asset flip... kind of hammers home the point about asset flips, they harm the efforts of genuine amateur games like The Botanist, which had very, very low player counts. Yes, the game is not at all without flaws, which we'll get into, but I feel part of the blame for the failure to reach an audience here is all the pollution on Steam... asset flipping is harmful. To gamers and to genuine developers. On the upside, the game does feature customisable controls and resolution, so at least some of the basic, minimum requirements have been met. Unfortunately there's a number of other technical defects and shortcomings which contribute to the game being difficult to recommend to gamers. The game features lazy low-polygon "retro" assets, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the mid 2000s. It's unclear why the developers weren't able to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets for the game, and also irrelevant... what matters is that this looks bad as a result of their decisions, a compromise PC gamers shouldn't have to put up with. The developers didn't design the game for modern gaming PCs, as such the display resolution caps out at 1080p, a very low resolution that became mainstream back in 2006 and became obsolete when 4K entered the mainstream in 2014. The game simply won't look right on modern gaming displays due to this failure on the part of the developers. The controls and game handling are notably very floaty and imprecise, and movement on the ground is sluggish. It's janky and unsatisfying to play... and any experienced gamer will tell you, the handling, responsiveness and general gameplay feel of the control scheme must be well polished for this kind of game to succeed. Unfortunately, this is something the developer seems to have phoned in, with little to no apparent gameplay testing or polish done. Another defect in the game caused by the console-peasant-centric design is the intolerably bad camera controls. There's no effective mouselook, and control of the viewing angles is deliberately outside of reasonable control from the user. This defect springs from the limitations of inferior console peasant children's toy gamepads, but on PC we don't have this limitation due to KB+M controls... however, the developer deliberately chose to arrogantly foist this handicap onto PC gamers. Out of spite, or laziness, it's unclear, regardless, once more console peasants and console devs have made gaming worse for everyone. This looks a lot like it was designed for consoles. While this is on PC, it has all the hallmarks and deficiencies of a console game, from the clunkier than needed control scheme to the less than cutting edge graphics. There's 10's of thousands of PC games on Steam, and PC gamers deserve only the best. This might not appeal to many gamers due to the lack of PC-centric design. It's unclear why this never made it to the video game console appliances it seems to have been designed for. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The Botanist didn't appeal much to the people who own a copy of the game, either. It has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the game didn't really capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for finishing a level without dying, trivial to get, but less than 27 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game. Hardly a success story, gamers just weren't all that interested in the game. The poor quality of this game is also reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 2 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? The Botanist is relatively cheap at $3 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 11,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
