Sweet Dreams is a small 2D platformer with a pretty silly idea behind it, and I think that is part of the charm. I play as Dream Boy, a kid superhero who is stuck inside a strange dream world full of sweets and candy. The whole thing has that old school arcade feeling where I am mainly moving from one side of the level to the other, fighting enemies and collecting as much stuff as I can. It is not trying to be a huge story driven platformer, and I think keeping things simple works in its favour. The main gameplay is straightforward. I can shoot enemies with lasers, jump on them and collect sweets along the way to build up my score. There are also Power Cells that let me transform into Mega Dream Boy, which gives the combat a nice little burst of power. I like having something to work towards during a level because it makes collecting the Power Cells feel more useful than just grabbing another random collectible. The combat itself is basic, but it fits the arcade style and I found it easy enough to get into. Where I think the game does well is with its bright candy themed presentation. The enemies and environments have a goofy look that fits the idea of being trapped inside a strange dream. It has a clear 1990s arcade influence too, and I can see why the developer went in that direction. It does not have the visual detail of a much bigger platformer, but I do not think it needs it. The colourful style gives it enough personality to stand out from a completely generic 2D shooter. The biggest issue for me is that the gameplay does not go very deep. Shooting, jumping, collecting sweets and reaching the end of the level are basically the main things I am doing. The time slowing and combat elements give it a little more variety, but I still wanted more different situations to keep things interesting. The game also feels quite focused on chasing scores, which is fine for an arcade game, but it means there is less here if I am looking for a longer adventure with lots of progression. I do appreciate that it is a free game and that it supports full controller play. That makes it very easy for me to pick up and just play for a while without having to worry about committing much time or money to it. There is also an evil boss waiting at the end, so there is at least a clear goal beyond simply collecting sweets. I think the game would be stronger with more enemy variety, more interesting level ideas and some extra abilities, but the basic package is easy enough to understand and enjoy. Overall, Sweet Dreams is a decent little arcade platformer that knows exactly what it wants to be. I like the silly candy world, the simple shooting and the Mega Dream Boy transformation, and there is something satisfying about trying to collect everything while making my way through the levels. It does feel limited once I have seen most of what the gameplay has to offer, though, and I think a bit more variety would have pushed it further. Still, for a free game with a simple retro style, I think there is enough here to have some fun with it. Rating: 7.2/10
