"Super Neat Cat" is just a low key asset flip, the developer ripped off Sunny Land and just pallete swapped the fox character from the asset pack, mangled it onto a basic Unity platformer engine, and then put a price tag on it to try get paid cash money for mangling other people's game assets. Since this game is essentially a gallery of stock assets rearranged and kitbashed out, at first glance it looks okay, but there's much more to a game than the appearance that other people's game assets can provide. When developers aren't capable of doing their job and creating high quality assets, it's also true they can't do any of the rest of the job of a game developer either, and it shows here. This game is fairly dated at 6 years old... and even back then it looked old and busted compared to contemporary, professionally made 3D games of the same period. It looked bad then, it looks worse now. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. There's no initial download price, but the developer was charging $8 USD for this. Attempting to scam gamers into paying that much money for other people's game assets is NEVER okay. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It seems like a nice gesture for the game to have no up-front cost anymore, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. This is also a bit of a slap in the face to anyone who showed enough questionable judgement to pay money for this... nobody got refunded. Even as a free game, this couldn't find an audience. With a peak of only 5 players, it's clear the Steam community took one look and walked away. They literally couldn't pay people to spend time playing this. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Definitely not. No up front price, but I still feel almost as ripped off as Ansimuz, the real creator of Sunny Land.
Overview:
'Super Neat Cat' is a simple 2D platforming game where you play as a white cat on a mission to rid the world of a terrible virus called the "Nanobot Virus". Play through 63 levels (including a secret one) varying from short to semi-short lengths while you run, jump and stomp your way in hopes to find the source of the virus and hopefully destroy it. The game itself is actually pretty fun and also fairly lengthy compared to other free 2D platformers I've played. Although the levels aren't insanely long nor in depth, I still found the game to be fun albeit very easy.
Gameplay:
Think of your traditional side scrolling adventure game and you pretty much got the gist of the game. Your objective is to get from start to finish while avoiding typical hazards such as spikes, traps, fire, enemies and more. The game introduces different types of hazards and enemies that change up the gameplay at a steady pace which is honestly pretty nice. Although I personally felt the game had some repetition to it, it still didn't deter me from wanting to finish it. It does gradually increase in difficulty but overall, the game is perfectly playable for even the most casual of players. On top of that, there are some extra goals on the side that must be met if you want to get the alternate ending to the game. Each level contains a badge associated with the amount of crystals collected for said level in addition to a time trial badge and all of them must be obtained for the secret ending. Getting them is relatively easy and honestly shouldn't stress you out at any capacity. The only drawback is that it may take a little more time as you'll usually have to play through most levels twice: one for the crystals and another for the time trial. But in all seriousness, the game is so easy that it probably won't take more than 2 hours to finish assuming you're not trying to 100% the game. I only have a few gripes with the game but none of them hurt the game to the point that you shouldn't play it. My first one is that some enemies have awkward hitboxes. You're meant to stomp on animals plagued with the Nanobot Virus but some of them have such wonky hitboxes that more times than one I would jump right on top of them but will end up getting hit. Sometimes I'll jump smack dab right into their sides and they'll die or stranger yet, I'll stomp on them and take damage but still kill them. To be fair though you don't technically need to kill every enemy (except for in the dungeons) and can skip over them if you really wanted to. Another pet peeve I have is that whenever you jump towards a platform but just barely clear it, you'll perform a small hop for some reason. This can be problematic in some points of the game where you really shouldn't be jumping. Lastly, the checkpoint feature in the game isn't as useful as I initially thought as it only applies to hazards that kill you instantly (holes, sawblades, lasers). You start the level with 3 hearts and each hit you receive takes away half a heart. If you fall victim to any of the hazards I just mentioned, you'll lose half a heart but will die instantly. This is where the checkpoints come in and you respawn. But if you lose all of your hearts, you fail the level and must start from the beginning anyway. Pretty weird checkpoint system if you ask me.
Controls:
Move and jump. There's not much else to it. You do have a second jump which is great. Not only that but the game has dynamic jumping which surprised me at first cause most free platformers you get nowadays have static jumping. What this means is that instead of jumping at a fixed height, the distance is dependant on how long you hold the jump key for. This is imperative for platforming games and I'm glad the developer didn't overlook this crucial mechanic because there were quite a few times where I needed to jump low as not to die. Despite there not being any way to remap keys, the game is so primitive that you honestly shouldn't even need it.
Graphics:
It's your typical pixelated art approach that many and I mean many 2D platformer games love to incorporate. It isn't bad or anything nor is it super pixelated but at this point these kinds of art styles when it comes to platforming games is old and tired. It's not to say the colors are bland or anything. I actually like the color schemes used throughout the game. The environments change and even intertwine with each other giving the eyes at least something new to see every now and then which is great. But the overall design and look of the game is something I've seen time and time again and honestly isn't anything special. Regardless, it still works and doesn't do anything to harm the gameplay.
Audio:
Contains the usual 8bit style sound effects when collecting crystals, getting hit or jumping. It's something you'd hear back in the days of good ol' flash games which depending on the person can be a good thing or a bad thing. The only thing I didn't like very much was the music. Not because it was bad, but because it just kept droning on and on and on. The soundtrack alone isn't bad but it loops so frequently that it gets repetitive minutes into your playthrough and trust me, I've played games with repetitive music and beat them before the music could drive me insane but it'll take you more than a few minutes to beat this game. Thankfully you can adjust both sound volume as well as music volume and get this, there are volume bars. Hallelujah.
Conclusion/TL;DR:
'Super Neat Cat' is a pretty lengthy 2D platformer for a game that's free and offers simple gameplay that isn't hard. It clocks out around 2-3 hours of total gameplay across 64 levels assuming you're trying to 100% it and feels like a complete game. For even casual gamers to enjoy platforming games, this is one of those free pixelated ones that excel way farther than many others of similar style and gameplay. It feels and plays much better than many free 2D sidescrollers I've dipped my foot in and if you're looking for something casual but not too short, 'Super Neat Cat' is a decent option.
I love this game I don't why it is free! To good! Worth it!
Very Neat little game, I've never played platformers before so I struggled a bit but it was fun!
A lot of LOVE and EFFORT went into this indie game. It's a nice and solid experience.
Хороший представитель жанра, не самый сложный, но весьма интересный. Больше всего заинтриговала концовка игры, так что жду продолжения_ 8.2/10
Fajna gierka.
