I want to preface what I'm about to say with this: I understand just how difficult and time consuming game dev is. Anyone who can fully complete and publish a game is super dedicated to the craft. Even moreso with this game seeing how inspired it is. This isn't some shovelware slop that was churned out with free assets in a week, it took months if not years of work to get fully completed, probably while juggling a fulltime job. All this being said, Super Arter is a half baked, cryptic, infuriating mess. There's so many aspects of this game that make it not worth the $10 price tag. It's confusing, unforgiving, poorly thought out, sloppy, repetitive and bland. It's abundantly clear that little to no playtesting was done for this game. Giant leaps of faith that require photographic memory, projectiles across the map killing you instantly and forcing you to go back to the start. "Puzzles" that involve doing laps around the same room multiple times where buttons are intentionally placed in your way that force you to start from the beginning if you hit them. Enemy attacks have zero telegraph, things happen instantly. Penguin? Instantly slides towards you, if you don't know that they do that, you will die, potentially sending you back to the first part of a level. Boss 2's ground attack? Instantaneous. You're not having your platforming or puzzle solving skills challenged, you're throwing yourself at a brick wall over and over until you know how to navigate the level perfectly. It's not engaging or interesting, it's mind numbing and infuriating. The game gets slightly better at the start of world 4, it makes clever use of throwable swings and has you juggling the key as well as other objects to navigate to the exit, but I had reached my tolerance for this game by the time I was at the world 4 boss. I completely gave up. The attack patterns on this sword are instant and you have to get close enough to hit it with a barrel. Half the time you do this the sword uses a lunge attack that is often unavoidable, either because you're at a wall or it's too far above you to jump over it. On my furthest attempt, the "2nd phase" started and the boss randomly leaped up onto another platform and killed me instantly, undoing all my progress. I caved in and manually edited my savefile to make the game think I beat the boss. This doesn't even address how horribly rushed the rest of the game is. The main adventure is short, with only ~30 levels. This isn't necessarily bad if the levels all had unique ideas that engaged with what's possible with the game's mechanics, but each world is essentially 5 levels with the same exact idea, just laid out in different positions. The unusually short soundtrack also makes me think things were rushed. Each world has a single theme lasting about a minute that loops on repeat and 5 minutes in you'll be begging for it to stop. No level select music, results screen music, victory fanfare. It feels bare bones and unpolished. Same thing with the sprites as well. What is complete looks great, but many tiles like the platforms, are these two tone squares with no shape or shading, it looks jarring and out of place. The final boss room still has debug text on the side of the screen that the developer completely forgot to remove. The only person I could recommend this game to would be people who enjoy games like "I Wanna Be The Guy" where the whole gimmick is that the game is unfairly difficult, maybe then you'd like this. But if you were looking for a spiritual successor to Mario vs. Donkey Kong, this is not it chief.
Hi everyone! I’d like to share my experience with Super Arter. I had the pleasure of playing the game and even got to follow its development closely. I was genuinely impressed with what was delivered, especially considering it’s the work of an independent developer. The game is clearly a heartfelt homage to classic 2D titles from the 80s and 90s, offering a challenging and nostalgic experience. Yes, there are moments in the game that test your patience, but that’s part of the charm for those who enjoy titles that require persistence and attention to detail. The atmosphere, soundtrack, and level design truly bring back memories of an era where every level completed felt like a real accomplishment. Additionally, I’ve seen firsthand how committed the developer is to improving the game. He’s open to feedback and actively working on updates, which speaks volumes about his dedication to the community. Unfortunately, I recently came across a review that seemed unfair and even misleading. It gave the impression that the goal was to discourage others from trying the game. While I respect different opinions, I believe Super Arter deserves to be judged for what it truly is: a heartfelt tribute to classic platformers and proof that independent developers can create something unique, even with limited resources. I strongly encourage anyone who enjoys classic platformer-style games to give Super Arter a try. The price is very accessible, and the developer is clearly passionate about improving the experience for fans of this genre. Try it for yourself—you might just find yourself pleasantly surprised, as I was!
Super pretty visuals and really fun gameplay, an absolute 10/10 for players who are into 2D platformers and pixel graphics games
