2.4/10 - About How You'd Expect An Olympics Game To Be... So there are some cool things about this game; there are 26 different events and a career mode to choose from. Some of the movement triggers feel like hitting notes from Guitar Hero; which was pretty cool. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough to put this game into the thumbs up category. It always ruins sports games for me when it's not skill based; meaning once you figure out the moves you can get amazing scores every single time... That's not fun. Also, another killer for me is the audience; no time was spent with this obviously. In a stadium of 50,000 there are only 4 different looking audience members. Even for 2008 that's pretty bad or just lazy. The game will crash if you minimize the screen; and maybe a few other times like it did for me. This game could actually be fun if the multiplayer/coop existed in any capacity. Someone must have been pretty high to think this was still worth $20. Actual Value - $1-3ish

Accidently Reviewed
Was this review helpful or maybe even not helpful? Either way join this group for more. Free Keys and Reviews weekly! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbLOdjahwIY This reminds me of a cross between Epix Summer Games and some Konami game I had on the Gameboy. It's not perfect by any means but the range of events is quite wide and there are far more than you first realise - various kinds of cycling, swimming, jumping, running, and throwing stuff. You win shiny things, and break records and your keyboard. It ran smoothly for me and some of the events had a bit of a learning curve. It suffers from some lazy moments (did it have to be rushed out for the Beijing Olympics, I wonder?) but is basically fun. It's certainly not presented in '3D comic style' - more 'trying to be real but not quite getting there because we don't have the money' style. Nor is it worth £15.99 - get it on sale. Until then, watch me butcher it!
I am a pole vaulter at the D1 college level in the US. I bought the game, went straight to the pole vault event. Afterwards, brought in all of my roommates, (who are also my teammates,) and we sat down and did a decathlon. Never before have I seen all of my roommates so excited to try and outdo each other as much as when I bought this. We got a noise complaint and the 800m runner broke a blood vessel trying to win the 400. Beautiful game. Thank you devs.
Summer Athletics 2009 includes indeed a lot of different sport events, but the differences between them leave a lot to be desired. The new coop- and splitscreen multiplayer-modes are also fairly amusing, but overall there is too little innovation.
Summer Athletics is an ancient game from 2008. It's a whopping 16 years old at the time of this review. The game lacks support for the typical features of modern gaming PCs, hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on contemporary machines. The game looks and feels dated. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an old game. This seems to have be lingering on Steam with an inflated price to try profit from abandonware. This is a rather poor bargain bin entry from 2008 designed for the Nintendo Wii. As it says on the box, you do a number of summer olympics themed minigames like various swimming, track and field events, all of which involve bashing away as hard as you can on the buttons of a console peasant children's toy gamepad. So there's no depth here at all. On the upside, the game does feature customisable controls and resolution, so at least some of the basic, minimum requirements have been met. Unfortunately there's a number of other technical defects and shortcomings which contribute to the game being difficult to recommend to gamers. Because this is designed for consoles, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the inferior console gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the console-centric developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for consoles forces upon a game. Once more, console peasants have made gaming worse for everyone. There's 4K support but the graphics are still super dated. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 7 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? Summer Athletics is insanely expensive for an abandonware nostalgia gouge, at $20 USD, and it's not worth it. That's right, TWENTY BUCKS FOR A SIXTEEN YEAR OLD GAME. The game is just too old, hasn't been modernised. And as the old saying goes, you can't go home again. For comparison, the $20 asking price for this game could get you games like "Detroit: Become Human", "Satisfactory" or "Monster Hunter Rise". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.
