I absolutely adore this game & I believe that this is one of the best (if not the best) fmv that have hit us so far. It doesn't rely on cheap fanservice spam nor on crazy innovative gameplay to get the players going, but instead just fully utilise the characters and the(ir) stories to do the heavy lifting which feels rather refreshing. Do be warned though that I'd recommend playing Love is All Around (LIAA) first before playing Such a Guy as while they aren't too related with each other, I believe that Such a Guy builds off LIAA so much so that you can only appreciate it after having played LIAA. Some scenes also just flat out play out better with some LIAA knowledge in mind to which it makes me uncomfortable to recommend Such a Guy to a person who have never played LIAA, let alone those who have yet to touch any asian fmv before. Going over the story, in my opinion it kinda started off pretty weirdly & awkwardly since it shows off a short montage of the place before throwing you into bunch of characters & situation without properly addressing MC situation, but after reaching the rental house (20-40~mins) then it really starts getting good since the game have started introducing you to the characters. The introductions are rather base level, but are fleshed out enough for you to have favourites. Each girl have their own unique charm & lovable traits where despite me not loving everyone, the game does a great job at slowly warming them up to make me dislike them less as time goes on. Each interaction with them also builds up over time resulting with the formation of beautiful friendship (and possibly something more). Simple act of "hey can you help fix this painting for me" ended up turning into an eventful stay-up session resulting with a decorative painting that allure guests to rent the place. There are a lot of these kind of things that doesn't seem big at a glance, but actually plays a major role later on in the story, especially as they build up with one another, creating for a chain of events. As a whole, the way that I can describe the fmv is that it’s a rather slow-burn where some characters romance might not be directly shown as oppose to "felt". I also would like to give a huge applause on the OSTs. While I’m no Wendy Wang fan, I do admit that the addition of her songs into the game is a huge up for the game, same goes for other soundtracks that are in the fmv. Now for some of the other “less” notable stuff that I really like, it’d be the nice QoL feature of the ability to seek 10s forward/backward for any & all scenes (even those that you haven't even seen!). It's a really nice feature and I wish more fmv would offer the option, especially when some of them can be rather buggy with your save states. Such a Guy is also relatively long with my first run reaching about 10-14h~, and for about $10 (local pricing), it’s a pretty good deal and finally the humour of the game is also crazy good, some can come off as rather "ehhh", but this isn't the norm. Despite all of this, the main cons for me is that MC kinda feels too dumb/full of himself at times which while doesn't ruin moments, does make it feel super unrealistic sometimes. Other than that, Some scenes were also built expecting player to choose choice Y, not X, which means that if you chose X, the dialogues afterwards don't really make any sense. This also effect flashback scenes which make it feel bit jarring since "what the hell I didn't do that!" which can come of as rather immersion-breaking. Furthermore, sometimes the game would be bit bugged which makes you either can't go to menu or theres no sounds coming out, requiring you to reload the scene or outright restart the game. Some scenes also lock your navigation, thus having you to load to a previous scene which can be rather annoying. The endings (imo) are kinda rather unbalanced where, without going into spoiler territory, some girls are able to show their affection way better than others alongside the fact that some of the them can be rather short. For the mixed stuff, the dev is actively still updating the game to which I heavily applaud them for, but this have resulted with the nerfing (and even outright removal) of mini-games and scenes, possibly due to player complaint and frustration. This does mean that the Such a Guy of today is different than Such a Guy of release as the nerfs that were done on the mini-games (imo) have in turn made some sections of the game to be of less impact due to the lack of challenge that were originally presented in them. Are they annoying? I mean yea, but it’s not like they were added in without a purpose and now with the removal of them, some scenes just ended up feeling empty (at least to me). Another mixed stuff would be, as stated before, the lack of fanservice within the game as Such a Guy doesn't rely too much on sexualised content which may be a negative to some (I counted 2 scenes that can be counted as fanservice, even then they aren't that bad). For once I’m grateful for it since I’m not one who enjoy fanservice in my fmv, but others might not be incline to agree with me. Lastly would be the lack of affection meters/lock requirement within chapters. Some players like the challenge, other players hate it since it removes the ability to goof around. Personally I think that Such a Guy have managed to reach a good middle-ground for both parties where there are endings that can be achieved specifically by goofing around & even then theres still affection requirement for the “girl-choosing section” at the last chapter of the game. Ultimately, if you're looking for another heavily-sexualised fmv ala Eternal Rebirth or most of Storytaco fmv, then you aren't getting it here, but if you're looking for a deep, engaging, and well-put out stories, then Such a Guy is just that and with all of that, it’s no surprise that it managed to win the community award of best fmv of 2025. Asian fmv is in a state where it’s getting increasingly good by the year and with 2025 closing by, it makes me look forward & wonder as to what 2026 have in store for us. 9.8/10 (this review was typed with Canary)
Amazing FMV! Alot of slice of life moments and story as well as cast was pretty great! The game is very polished. There are 9 chapters so there is alot of character development and the price even without discount is very fair. Would love a sequel and I would def recommend this game. Certainly one of my fav FMV out there
