This will be a positive review, and i really, *really* like this game. another reviewer mentiond Slicks and Slide from the good old days, and i remember playing that on a an ancient 286 machine with a friend, best game evar! The handling in Street Heat is almost identical to that, the drifting physics are nice and smooth, the colour scheme mix of black and white with bright neons is cool, with a nice look and feel. We found setting up online a bit of a nightmare though, took a few runs to get a lobby with both of us in it, which was a shame, it wasn't intuitive, so could do with some clarification, make it a little easier. the game overall has a very console vibe, and i don't know whether that'sa long term plan to migrate it onto consoles, so i guess any work around the online element has to fit into that. The permadeath when you go off map (as opposed to just off-track) feels a little negative, and could have a re-spawn maybe? clearly once the main game engine is done, there's lots of scope for additional features/power-ups etc etc, not sure that you'd need too much, and balance can be iffy once you start playing with that stuff. The game engine running Unity seems to be very slick and polished, and while the "map on a screen" idea takes me back to old codemasters days, it feels like maybe there could be more use of the 3D environment? not down to following the car, but maybe tinker with some of the layouts/angles to use the engine to do something cool? I see something in the control setup about using the d-pad around the paint-jobs/livery, that feels like it coule be better off-line, from the main menu, to set up before you go into the lobbies? unless i've just missed something there? trying to fiddle with that when you're on the line waiting to start sounds like it could be too fiddly/distracting. boil it down: work on the online functionality, make it a little easier to manage getting a lobby up make the car customisation a main menu thing think about the permadeath otherwise, I really love the game, hope to see some of the other functionality tidied up a bit, i'll keep en eye out for updates!
Maybe im missing the point here. Played game for about 45 minutes. First couple of races crashed out but after about 5 races started winning. Ended up winning the championship by 11 points and looking at the lap times the ai where 3 seconds off the pace. So I obviously I was the yellow car as you cant select any others. When I won the championship nothing happened and I cant select a different car. The other most disappointing aspect for me was the framerate. I have a high end pc that plays the modern games without a problem but for me this game just isn't as smooth as you would expect it to be. Had a look online but nobody was playing. I love top down racing games but for me this is limited without enough content and could be improved in many areas. I am also a games developer and I think another key point has been missed here. If you make all ai cars with the same skill level the points get spread thoughout the 3 cars. If one of the cars was more dominant they would be a bigger threat to you in the championship. Hopefully this game improves and gives the player more to do in the future. I am going to give it a thumbs up with the hope it improves. The truth is unsure!
Get this game only if you know that you want to play with your Steam friends together. Or make a local 4-player party on one machine. And only on sale. Besides that: meh. Not that good in singleplayer. You can grind for the other 3 car type or you can make 100% achievement if you are into those things. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1811801653 The game itself: reminds me Slicks 'N' Slide for MS-DOS. The aesthetic is fine, music is okay, handling needs some practice but the lack of variety makes the game boring.
Street Heat is a console ported micro-racer game, basically a ripoff of the arcade classic Super Sprint (copyright Atari, 1986). Race against bots or co-op on low poly maps (the maps are stylised to try disguise the low poly console assets). There's very little to this game, it's shallow, uninspired, and 100% derivative. It offers nothing that games decades old don't already provide with better quality. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The game features lazy low-polygon "retro" assets, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the 1990s. It's unclear why the developers weren't able to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets for the game, and also irrelevant... what matters is that this looks bad as a result of their decisions, a compromise PC gamers shouldn't have to put up with. Because this is designed for consoles, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the inferior console gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the console-centric developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for consoles forces upon a game. Once more, console peasants have made gaming worse for everyone. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. Street Heat has the farcical price of around $8 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam.
Well yes, but actually no.
Here's what you do:
Street Heat is a top down, single screen racing game primarily for multiplayer as there currently is no single player content other than four achievements (more on that below). The controls are a gas, brake, and left/right steering.
What I like:
+ The visuals are great with vibrant colors. + The music is amazing synth that sets a cool vibe for all the races. + The car physics feel right as you can easily slide around turns by controlling your speed. + The track designs are great at being distinctly different from each other. The solo city setting does not get tired due to the unique layouts of the tracks accompanied by distinct border colors. There are at least 11 courses, not including reverse variations (not sure on total, more on that in dislikes) + 1st place gets 5 points, 2nd 3 points, 3rd 2 points, 4th (last) 1 point, crashing gets you 0 points. Player with the fastest lap gets an extra point, regardless of final placing on the track + Train tracks on a lot (not all) of the courses add a random timing challenge to each track that must be planned for and adapted to. + Randomly placed oil slicks each time the track is run changes the difficulty of parts of the track, reducing effectiveness of muscle memory and more reliance on adaptation. + Local and (theoretical) online multiplayer, with or without bots (more on that in dislikes). + 1st place winner from the previous race breaks a tie in voting for the next track to race on (more on that in dislikes).
What I dislike:
- There is no way to select a specific course to race on in any game mode. The first track is always random and then each track after that is a vote on three possible tracks taken from the larger pool of tracks in the game. - The game seems to have been abandoned by its creators as there must have been a ranking system before but there isn't one now. Eight of the twelve total achievements were given to me upon booting up the game my first time. One is for doing just that, but the other seven were for ranking up and unlocking cars which is no longer a thing. Maybe online is even cut out. I haven't been able to test the online play, but I can create a lobby for myself and any number of local players or bots (total four). - Four players seems like a low maximum on this type of game, but the tracks do look designed to fit only that number. Larger (wider) tracks would be needed to support more players. - There is no time trial mode or anything other than basic competitive race mode with other cars. As it stands, there is no single player content other than the four achievements you don't get from starting the game (which I got in an hour and could be done faster). - Crashing in races takes you out of the race and you get no points. Crashing is done by either getting hit by the front of the train (not the side thankfully) or falling off the track into a bottomless pit (these pits are not all over the place, but can catch you off guard very easily because there are guard rails in some places, but not all). I think crashes should just be a respawn to be more party friendly, or at least make crashes permanent be a toggle in the race options. You can also still crash after getting first place (going from 1st to last for that track). - Speaking of which, you retain full control over your car after you finish the race. So you do have to make sure you don't crash and lose your placement, but you could also turn around and try to mess up the next player behind you to further cement your lead. This sounds fun at first, but I could see it being really toxic/bully behavior in online games. - The "local" or "online" play mode does not give the player any settings. These are automatically set, filling empty positions with bots (I can't tell what difficulty) to get 20 points. Only the "create" mode allows you to choose how many bots v human players, the AI difficulty, and how many points to go to. This is an automatic online mode, so there is no pausing (at least not any bots).
Conclusion:
I had a lot more negative to say than positive, so I do not recommend this game overall. I'm glad I got it for half price, but the game has little to nothing to do in it if you can't find people to play with. I do think it is a shame that a game with such a great core has been left behind. This game just needs some more options, basic course selection for local play and maybe some other modes (at least time trial). If a game is made primarily for online multiplayer, it won't be successful without a community.
Here's a demonstration:
https://youtu.be/dTxW6fSdGQs
