Step Away makes your time off-screen feel more rewarding. While you’re away, going for a walk, cleaning up or grocery shopping, the little wanderer gathers steps. When you return, you might find he’s earned a new hat for his journey.
Revenue comes from in-game items and microtransactions, which our price-based model doesn't estimate. The player count below is how many people own it, not what they spent.
About
Hey there!
Ever find yourself stuck in front of your PC with zero motivation to do the things life actually expects from you? Then this little app we made might be just what you need.
Type in what you're about to do, place your cursor in the square, and watch the little wanderer set off. While you’re away doing something useful, like going for a walk, cleaning up, or grocery shopping, he’ll quietly gather steps in the background. And when you come back, he might even have earned a new hat for his efforts.
We know it’s not always easy to get away from screen and deal with life stuff. This app gives you a gentle push in the right direction and a small reward for being off-screen.
This is a super minimal experience. No pressure, no complexity, no real gameplay. Just peaceful vibes and a little guy walking while you’re AFK.
Rack up steps to unlock a handful of charming hats. Equip whatever suits your style.

Step Away is one of those games that is barely a game in the usual sense, but I actually like what it is trying to do. The whole idea is to give me a reason to step away from my computer and do something else for a while. I type in what I am about to do, place the little character in the square and then leave him walking while I go and do whatever I need to do. When I come back, he has collected steps and can sometimes unlock a new hat. It is extremely simple, but I think that simplicity is the whole point. The little wanderer is easily the best part for me. I like having this tiny character quietly walking around while I am doing something away from the screen. It gives me a small reward for actually leaving the computer instead of making me feel like I need to keep playing. I can go for a walk, clean something, do some shopping or just get on with something else, and the game keeps progressing in the background. I think that is a genuinely nice idea, especially compared with games that are constantly trying to keep me looking at the screen. The hats are a simple but effective reward too. As the character collects more steps, I can unlock different hats and change how he looks. There are not loads of complicated customisation systems here, but I found myself wanting to see what I would unlock next. It gives the otherwise empty background activity a little bit of purpose. I also like that the game does not make the rewards feel too important. They are just small things I can collect while I am away doing something more useful. The minimalist design works really well for what Step Away is trying to be. There are no enemies, difficult objectives or complicated menus that I need to keep checking. I can start it and leave it alone. The little pixel character walking around is relaxing to watch, but I do not actually need to sit there watching him. That is probably the most important thing about the whole game because the experience would completely miss the point if it constantly demanded my attention. The obvious weakness is that there is almost no traditional gameplay. I am not making interesting decisions or overcoming challenges, and there is very little reason to stay in the game once I have set everything up. Even the developer describes it as having no real gameplay, and I think that is a fair description. The hats give me something to work towards, but after a while the experience can become more about waiting than actually playing. I also think some of the later rewards take a very long time to reach, so the progression can feel extremely slow. I think the best way for me to use Step Away is as a little companion rather than a game I actively play. I can leave it running while I get away from the computer and then come back later to see how far the wanderer has travelled. It was also apparently created as a very small one week experiment, and I think that explains why the whole thing is so focused and stripped back. There are 15 achievements as well, which gives me some extra goals if I care about that side of things, but I would not recommend playing this purely for the achievements. Overall, I think Step Away is a cute little idea that succeeds because it does not try to be something it is not. There is almost no gameplay and the progression is very basic, but I like the idea of rewarding myself for actually stepping away from the screen. The little character, simple hats and peaceful presentation give it enough charm to make me want to keep it around. I would not rate it highly as a traditional game because there simply is not enough to play, but as a free little app designed to encourage me to take a break, I think it does its job surprisingly well. Rating: 7.2/10
cozy idle
Nice for a nice sleep or a walk
Bezduché, nezáživné, život ubíjející. Naprosto k ničemu tahle pseudohra.
