https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2006836804

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2006836887
I love shmup games and completed several hard games. I understand my fellow gamers' frustration and agree with the Mixed user rating for Stellatum. Although I am biased towards a positive review for indie games, this game has serious issues that indicate it wasn't tested & balanced properly by the developers. This game could have much higher ratings if the difficulty and progression were properly balanced, which seems to be a common issue with these devs' games (such as their "I, AI" that I recently completed after it was "rebalanced"). I would only recommend getting Stellatum (especially while on sale) if you love space shmups with great visuals and don't mind grinding hard to get only marginally better upgrades. I have just finished Mission 50 in this game's campaign mode (completed most of the side missions and constructed all blueprints). The grind was a bit too much and playing this did not feel fun/rewarding but I finally finished it since I am a bit of a stubborn completionist.
Pros:

The general aesthetic of the spaceships, asteroids and backgrounds is very pleasing.
The customizability of the ship is a big plus. I would have loved to see options for adjusting the firing angles / spread as well as addition of a more efficient magnet part (or an option) for making materia & component collection less of a painful ordeal as well.
Some of the boss designs & attacks were quite memorable (like the laser eye boss). I wish there were more boss fights like that.
The campaign mode is long enough by itself (50 main missions + 28 side missions)
The Arena (endless survival mode) is a plus. Unfortunately RNG dictates the layout, rewards and therefore the outcome of every round, which makes comparing player scores unfair since the conditions were totally different. The first round is the hardest since you start from scratch with zero system & weapon upgrades; once you get past that it gets better.
Multiplayer options - I haven't tried this feature yet
I like the dark moody soundtrack on the menus and the higher octane music during the action.
Supports both keyboard + mouse & controller setups and allows you to customize key bindings. I haven't encountered any input lags or bugs with my keyboard + mouse setup. The ship's movement speed is dependent on the engine so if it is sluggish then you need to upgrade your engine in the hangar area.
The price is reasonable.
Supports 4K resolution and "generally" runs smooth and stable.

Cons:

Unfortunately, I had a couple of crashes during the campaign -usually when the mission was just loaded and the player ship was about to be spawned. Thankfully the save files weren't corrupted and I was able to continue after restarting the game.
There is just one ship you can play with. No alternative ships with different capabilities, and not even reskins.
There is no tutorial to help the new players understand the game mechanics. Due to this, I discovered a little too late during my gameplay that I can use materia to create the necessary ship parts for upgrades in the hangar (materia costs are a bit high though).
Drop rates of ship parts and "materia" are very low and they are easy to miss due to enemy pressure or just plain visibility. This means you'll be stuck with ridiculously underpowered weaponry and armor if you don't repeat the previous levels over and over, which will slow down your progress quite a bit.
Even on "Easy" mode, the enemy HP and fire rate is too high and they are numerous. They even shoot you while they are out of the screen. Even the peasant minions are like mini-bosses. On the other hand, the player's guns are basically pea shooters. The damage & firing rate of your main guns are too low and the cooldown periods & energy requirements of special weapons are just too high. Combined with the "weapon overheat" mechanic and forced forward movement, completing a level is more of a chore than fun.
When the ship is destroyed it is respawned at the same location without any shield or temporary invulnerability so you are basically screwed if you died under heavy fire because you will probably die there again. Also after the respawn you get half of the ship's actual armor value. Also the shields and reactor stop working (they don't recharge) after your first death.
It is almost impossible to differentiate the asteroids in the foreground from the ones in the background. Also the colors of the enemies usually matches the colors of their base, making it harder to spot them. This kind of camouflage makes sense strategically (for the enemy) but it is an inconvenience at best for a shmup player. Also limited color palette makes the game look a bit bland / monotone.
The "Collector" (collect 500 components) achievement is bugged and doesn't trigger since my number of collected components is stuck at 499 and it doesn't increase.
There are some typos within the menus (such as the "Reacors" category in the Hangar).
Story is almost nonexistent and that's not a major issue for me in a shmup game but your preferences may differ.
I would gladly change my review to a positive one if the issues I mentioned are addressed.

+- Cheap on some sale - Unremarkable gameplay. Input lag / no optimization - Everything has tiny hitboxes, except player ship. - Barely anything in the options related to the display - Bullets Battle-Garegga-hard to see - Unremarkable OST - Cumbersome interface on (prolly due to laglag) and off gameplay. - Tiny, hard-to-read fonts.
So, on one hand, STELLATUM isn't a horribly-designed shmup or anything. It's really just kind of mediocre, with a lot of stages that are just waves and waves of similar enemies, and occasional bosses which are unique but not all that interesting. On the other, there's 50 stages plus thirty side stages, and finishing the game took me eleven hours. That's a really long time for something that never develops into a really interesting game. And don't really look for ship customization to save it, either - while post-launch patches made the game less grindy, a lot of the special weapons, where you have actual choices in the matter, have far too long of a cooldown time for their effects, given that most stages just have waves and waves of similar foes, and most other equipment is straight upgrades. Ultimately, my review is as follows: only 1/3 of players played long enough to beat the first boss, and only 1/8 finished the first quarter of the game. The people who quit before then aren't wrong, and neither are the people who see that and choose to not buy the game.
Good game, I very much enjoyed it. As I see some reviews, I feel I should write something that 'overcomes' them all - well, I cant do that. But... This is finished game, balanced and polished. Long enough - maybe 14 hours to end story mode. Some levels are harder than others, not overwhelming, so game difficulty (adjustable: easy, normal, hard)is fine. It brought me memories of Xenon II Megablast - my favorite shmup of all time - you have to even collect little balls from dead enemies, except story mode can't be played through on one session (thankfully) and the music is not as good and... - you can change weapons (and other things) and - save blueprints to craft them later. - you can play earlier levels again - has lots of different weapons, protection - and attack abilities (things that have cooldown) - the ship is controlled like in asteroids (but it stops, no need to use breaks yourself) on topdown scrolling screen - playable with mouse and keyboard which is nice So there
One downside is: Even if there is lots of 'powerups' theres only few useful. Some of them look really awesome but they lack the power to compete with the others. So balance there, and maybe more levels, weapons and stuff - even on a form of DLC - would have made this game... Even better :) But it's still worth the whole price!
TLDR it's ok for little casual pass time. i can say I never encountered what most of the negative reviews said they encountered. The mouse speed is super slow that I can agree with, but i never bought a programmable 16400 dpi mouse for nothing right? I never encountered a keyboard bug not sure what that reviewer going on about. I went to mission 7 so i never had to restart after 2 missions so there is another debunked negative review. From what i can tell most of the negatives are from whiners because they lack the intelligence to figure out how to counter the flaws of the game. What game doesn't have a flaw or 2? i have never played a perfect game even triple A titles have flaws sometimes flaws they probably should of never had. With that said, it's a simple casual game, played many like it sure to play many more like it. Think my only gripe one the screenshots make you feel like you get this creative customization right off bat, well you don't so let that be a warning. That screenshot also mislead me to believe that. You have to collect the blueprints to have all them parts that the screenshot shows and you also have to collect the material to craft the components to craft the parts, so there will be a crafting grind if you wish to have the parts you see in that inventory screenshot all at once. The missions have intense moments and slow moments, just remember to let up off the fire button every now and then to let your guns cool down you don't wanna overheat in a sh*t storm lol. Sure, i recommend it for little casual break from your FPS and RPG games. If you don't like games like this, why are you here looking at it? Move along if it is not your cup of tea.

This does a lot of things right. Customize your ship, shoot some aliens and asteroids. It definitely needs some work. The text hasn't been spell checked, I had a CTD and some of the UI is very busy. It also feels a little too expensive but getting it on sale makes it worthwhile. https://youtu.be/21zD6osEFXY
