Really enjoy this game because it's very unique and fun to play getting really close to a strategic board game and I would love to see more story on it!

In steam city Units have a limited number of action-turns, and some playable characters are capable of doing more. Special units have abilities that others lack, like a character using special attacks or inspiring nearby units to fight harder against their enemies. I especially liked that every unit was basically set up as a chess piece and the maps looked like diorama , the lighting is gorgeous as is the overall atmosphere . Great potential, significant pathing problems, was the most frustrating thing other then the UI, why is end turn so far away from the center commands and the units on the far bottom left? no borderless window mode :( so full screen or normal window modes only the music was pleasant and the voice acting was surprisingly good
Only if you like real-life miniature wargames and dioramas, and only if you have enough patience to win the fight against the camera
I initially left a negative review because the camera bs kicked my @ss on the second level. But then, I decided to give it a second chance because i could feel a bit of potential, and with most of my favorite games, I initially had a complicated relationship at the begining. Once I mastered the use of both of the camera's control schemes at once (overhead movements and FPS movements) it became easier, and I could appreciate the game for what it is. Is this one of my favorite games? probably not, but it's still a unique game and a nice hidden gem. The devs set out to simulate a strategy game of old, with miniatures, like those old wargames that evolved into D&D and gave birth to RPG games. And they really nailed the visuals, everything looks gorgeous and I wish I could more easily orbit the buildings and characters which are full of charm. Every level is built like a self contained little diorama with colorful NPCs. The setting is a made of steampunk mixed with some japanime version of the Meiji era, which creates a nice original ambiance. I won't dwell on the scenario, because I don't like steampunk and the intro story sounds particularly infantile, even by steampunk standards, but scenario is not a major problem for me as long as the game is fun. Which is more or less the case here. The first level is a VERY barebones tutorial, and on the second level, the wheels are off. As you play you'll realize that the strategy is rather linear, the levels aren't very difficult, but they require you to understand how to beat them by understanding what's hidden in them and how to use the ressources. You can waste a lot of time if you rush head on and get killed near the end because you didn't pay attention to the briefing. The levels can get very long and as you progress and kill the enemy units, they become easier, and sometimes the endgame turns into a game of patience when you have some enemies left to kill or some units to retrieve from the other side of the map, one turn after another. But all of this is part and parcel with real-life simulationist wargames. As I said the camera is a major annoyance, it does all the wrong things that a game camera shouldn't do, including getting stuck on the geometry, moving either too slow or too fast, getting out of your control and rotating madly on the enemy turn, and forcing you to look for your units before you can take your turn, etc, etc... The second level is a real filter and will test your patience, there are hundreds of NPCs and among them some policemen that are important to gameplay, but you have no way to distinguish them without zooming on every NPC on the map, and the camer makes this a nightmare. The second level is the reason I initially gave up. But the camera isn't the worst part of the game. The devs decided to prevent saving during a level. I can understand that they wanted to prevent save-scumming, but maybe they should have found a middle-ground solution, like for example saving automatically every time a unit dies. The problem becomes crucial in the last two levels which can go well over three hours to complete. The only solution I found was to leave the game run in the background while I was doing something and come back to it later, but I suspect that this lack of save function could prevent some players from finishing the game. The turns resolution takes a bit longer than it should, mostly because of the game pausing after every unit, and this can not be changed in the options. In the end, I was captivated by the charm of this uncompromising simulation in a simulation, but only because I am familiar with the world of miniature wargames, so this is not for everybody. I must say, I can´t even play the game, because it crashes right at the beginning of the menu. I already tried to update my Driver, and it still doesn´t work. Really, don´t bother buying it.
