Stars In The Trash

1-3 hours to complete, Stars in the Trash is a completely handmade adventure where you play as Moka, a spoiled housecat who, after multiple failed attempts at slipping past their wheel-bound dog sibling Trasto, finally manages to slip out to the great outdoors for an unexpected journey. As typical of Valhalla Cats, the game is completely hand made, the background is watercolor paints and all the animation was first drawn by hand. There are real authentic, PREMIUM meows, purrs, and rumbles and I strongly suggest playing with a controller because it vibrates when Moka is napping and it’ll make your heart melt. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3735117223 Aside from it’s charming characters and expressive animations and the lovingly watercolor painted backgrounds, it’s a fairly easy experience to beat and not too complicated to 100%. The biggest downside is how short it is, but it’s a bittersweet feeling. You can see how much time, effort and care went into every brushstroke so it feels a bit cruel to have the game be so short, but it really is such a lovely game with so much personality from the artists I can only hope more people play Stars in the Trash, and think about it afterward. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3735117570
If you liked this review and want to read about similar games or just support me on my journey of playing my entire Steam backlog, you can join my curator group, Rune's Reviews! Have a nice day! Stars In The Trash, developed by Valhalla Cats and published by IndieArk alongside the developer, is a narrative-focused 2D adventure that prioritizes emotional storytelling and visual artistry over mechanical complexity. It presents a short but carefully crafted journey that feels less like a traditional video game and more like an interactive animated film, where atmosphere and character expression take center stage. From the moment it begins, it establishes a tone that is gentle, reflective, and quietly engaging. The story follows Moka, a domesticated cat who longs to escape the safety of home in search of something more exciting. This simple premise unfolds into a broader exploration of freedom, curiosity, and the risks that come with stepping into the unknown. Rather than relying on dialogue, the narrative is conveyed almost entirely through animation, environmental cues, and character behavior. This approach allows the story to feel universal, inviting players to interpret emotions and events through observation rather than explicit explanation. As the journey progresses, the tone shifts subtly, balancing moments of wonder with tension and vulnerability. Gameplay is built around side-scrolling exploration, combining light platforming with basic puzzle-solving and occasional chase or stealth sequences. The mechanics are intentionally straightforward, focusing on movement, interaction, and environmental navigation. Actions such as climbing, squeezing through tight spaces, or interacting with objects are designed to reflect natural feline behavior, which helps reinforce immersion. The simplicity of these systems ensures that the experience remains accessible, but it also means that the gameplay does not evolve significantly over time. Challenges are generally easy to understand and complete, placing more emphasis on maintaining the flow of the story than on testing the player’s skill. What truly defines Stars In The Trash is its visual presentation. The game features a hand-painted, watercolor-inspired art style that closely resembles traditional animation. Each environment is rich with detail, from warm interior spaces to lively outdoor settings, all brought to life through fluid animation and expressive character design. The attention to detail in movement and expression gives the characters a sense of personality that carries much of the narrative weight. This artistic direction is not only visually striking but also integral to the storytelling, as it communicates emotion and atmosphere without the need for words. The audio design complements this visual approach with a restrained and thoughtful use of music and sound. The soundtrack is subtle, often fading into the background to allow the visuals to take precedence, but it becomes more prominent during key moments to enhance emotional impact. Ambient sounds and environmental effects add depth to the world, creating a sense of presence that draws players further into the experience. Together, the visuals and audio create a cohesive atmosphere that feels both calming and immersive. Despite its strengths, the game’s limitations are noticeable. Its relatively short duration means that the experience can feel fleeting, leaving some players wanting more time to explore its world and characters. Additionally, the gameplay remains largely consistent throughout, with few new mechanics introduced to expand or vary the experience. Certain sections, particularly those involving tension or conflict, feel less developed compared to the rest of the game, which can slightly disrupt the otherwise smooth pacing. The pacing itself may also divide players. The game moves at a deliberate speed, allowing moments to breathe and encouraging players to take in the environment. This works well for its narrative focus but may feel slow for those expecting a more dynamic or action-oriented experience. The lack of dialogue and explicit direction requires a level of patience and engagement that not all players may be willing to invest. In the end, Stars In The Trash succeeds as a visually stunning and emotionally resonant experience that stands out through its artistic ambition and storytelling approach. It may not offer deep gameplay systems or extensive replayability, but it delivers a cohesive and memorable journey that lingers beyond its runtime. For players who appreciate games as a form of interactive art, it offers a heartfelt and beautifully crafted adventure. Rating: 8/10
A beautiful and adorable, very genuinely handcrafted game looking into the life of pets and strays! The story has some really sweet and heartfelt moments between the animals, it reminded me of a movie like The Fox and the Hound (one of my favourites) where the animals go on an emotional journey together! The environmental puzzles were clever but I wish some of them had a bit more difficulty in the solution! In the community hub they've shared lots of videos and pictures of all the huge amount of work that went into this game! Thousands of drawings for the frame by frame animations, every background scene is handmade with watercolours, and the music was composed beautifully with piano and violin! Everything about this was really special and genuine!
If you are a dogs/cats lover , you should absolutely try this one out !! I love hand drawn games , especially times where every single thing is AI already... i really wish games like these gets MORE attention than before , I saw the video so i really can feel whole game developing process was really challenging like mission impossible. Sincerely hope yall devs and your own pets can lived happily & healthy as many years as possible ! Ofc wish you all the best ! THANK YOU FOR THIS GAME
Not the most fleshed out game but tells a worthwhile heartfelt story. Deserves more support for the amazing artwork.
A very short game, but with wonderful narration, charming visuals, and delightful cat sounds. You can truly feel how much love the developers put into it. I wholeheartedly recommend it!
Cute game. The art is really great, and me reminded me a lot of the old Disney style. It's pretty short, but fun none the less.
Stars in the Trash no busca impresionarte; busca quedarse contigo un rato más. Es de esos juegos que no gritan, pero tampoco se olvidan. 10
