Stargazer is a small platforming adventure that I found surprisingly enjoyable once I got into its old school style. I play as Jaxx Fury, a returning hero who has to save his hometown from the dark wizard Nachtengel. The story is very straightforward, but I actually think that works well here because the game is much more interested in giving me a simple fantasy adventure filled with enemies, obstacles and heavy metal music. The gameplay mixes platforming with hack and slash combat, and I liked how quickly it gets me into the action. Jaxx uses his legendary guitar as a weapon, which is a wonderfully silly idea that gives the combat some personality. I can move through the levels, attack enemies and deal with different hazards while trying not to lose all of my health. The controls are simple enough to pick up quickly, but some sections still demand careful movement. The level design is probably my favorite part. The game takes me through a cursed town that works almost like a small labyrinth, with different environments and obstacles placed along the route. I enjoyed searching around for hidden extra lives because they give me another reason to explore instead of simply heading straight toward the exit. Some areas are fairly forgiving, while others can become noticeably more difficult when the traps and enemies are combined. The presentation has a very clear retro influence. The pixel art gives everything a simple arcade feeling, while the bright environments contrast nicely with the darker fantasy story. I also really liked the heavy metal soundtrack because it matches the exaggerated hero story and makes the combat feel more energetic. Nala guiding Jaxx toward his final confrontation gives the adventure a little more structure without overcomplicating things. My biggest issue is that the game can be frustrating in places. Some traps and enemy attacks can feel more punishing than I expected, especially when I am trying to move through a difficult section without much room for error. The combat is also fairly basic, so after I become comfortable with the main attacks, there is not much depth beyond improving my movement and learning enemy patterns. The biggest limitation is the overall size of the experience. Stargazer feels more like a compact retro adventure than a large platforming game, and I finished it wanting more levels, more enemy variety and more interesting abilities. I also think the story could have done more with its fantasy setting, because the basic idea of a legendary hero returning home has plenty of room for more memorable characters and moments. Overall, Stargazer is a charming free platformer that I enjoyed for its simple combat, challenging obstacles, pixel art and especially its heavy metal atmosphere. It is definitely a small game, but it has enough personality to make the short adventure enjoyable. I would have liked more variety and a little more polish, but the combination of guitar based combat and classic fantasy platforming makes it an easy little game for me to have some fun with.
