I have spent too much time on this game. It had its peak moment between 2019-2021. The game was originally intended as more of a cash grab style game, you required a paid currency to purchase chests and shell slots to store loot. But interest in this game died off so quickly that the owner made that currency just drop in a map called Star Cathedral, a map opened by Botters every day usually. The game is currently carried by Botters, and the only reason they exist is because the owner does not know the name of the main accounts of the current botters (so he can ban them, which he has done before). To play this game at a reasonable degree, you require a plugin called SBPE. Imagine, you need a plugin, designed by someone OTHER than the owner of the game, just to be able to play this game adequately. The plugin represents at least 3-5 years worth of updates that this game should have received but didn't. The owner clearly has no interest in keeping the game alive, he just keeps the servers running because he gets cheap discounts on them. I could keep ranting about the many issues of Starbreak but I won't, because I've already wasted enough time on this game. It's a loot hoarding simulator in its current state, with some very skilled players that have invested thousands of hours into the game which can do very impressive things. That's the game in a nutshell. If you start playing now, you might get into the game for a few months, then you'll quit, just like the majority of the player-base did years ago.

this game is like crack
I really like this game, although the permadeath function is kind of hard to get used to. It's a shame that no one is still messing with this game, I think it could have been even better. It reminds me somewhat of Metroid.
it's a side scroll which made out by mmo skin.
she stars on my break until i frozenblight
gameplay is basically bullet hell action platformer, quite fun, it's a shame that it got abandoned
back when i was in high school i spend 2 summers straight basically only playing this game and got many many friends absolutely hooked. unfortunately though, after hearing that there will be no new content, it kinda phased out for me cause i thought thats the end of it. now, 7 years later i remembered about it only to discover its still going strong despite the circumstances, props to the devs for making completely free, not even a option to dono and to the community as well for keeping this game alive and well. the game itself is still the same as i remember it. an absolute hidden gem. i would have loved to see how the game would evolved and grow but i guess it is how it is.
Warning: In-Game Cash Shop This game is infested with a toxic mobile app style cash shop. You will be prompted to and expected to give money/credit card details to the developers through this cash shop to buy in-game goods so you can play the game.
"StarBreak" is an ancient skill based cash shop infested "MMO" platformer with a sci-fi theme and a small handful of die hard sunken cost fallacy hangers-on who spent way more than they should on MTX on a platformer. I have a hard time finding any reason for 2D platformers to exist at all in the 21st century, but infesting them with a toxic cash shop really is the pits. This ancient train wreck is from 2016 and the developers aren't really maintaining it anymore, it's a dead game walking. Dead game platforming? What do you do in the game? Platform until you permadie, and then either give up or buy more stuff in the toxic cash shop like a good little cash piggy. You can't really play the game unless you're part of a large group, and given this cash shop with a game stapled onto it is gasping for air, you probably won't find one. On the topic of visuals, the weak looking 2D retro assets seem like they'd be more at home in a browser game or a mobile app. 3D graphics accelerators hit the mainstream of PC gaming in the mid 1990's with cards like the ATI Rage and Voodoo3D, there's no excuse for such poor 2D graphics in 2025. That alone is enough to disqualify this for recommendation. The developer chose not to do the job of a real game developer and create meaningful bespoke levels, narrative based gameplay progression and so on. Instead, they decided that "Procgen IS content!" and lazily tried to use procgen algorithms to create infinite, samey, repetitive, soulless levels, because that's a lot less work. As a result of this poor decision, the game gets tired and repetitive almost immediately. Developers must learn that procgen is a terrible substitute for creating real content. It should not be used as "ez-mode" for content creation, as the developer tried to do here. This game is fairly dated at 9 years old... and even back then it looked old and busted compared to contemporary, professionally made 3D games of the same period. It looked bad then, it looks worse now. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. This game is infested with mobile app store like microtransactions. This is a consumer hostile model that we don't need to see on PC. It's deceptively priced to gouge gamers, and that's a reason in itself to avoid this. Given that this free title won't increase your game collector count, is it worth your time to add it to your library? I think you should give this one a miss. Although it's free, your time and storage are valuable resources, and the market is filled with superior options.
