SPORE™ is a video game I played the year it released all the way back in 2008 when I was still in high-school. I recall skipping school one day and going online to see if there was anything new to play and came across SPORE™. It's hard these days to recommend anything coming from EA and Maxis™ given their greedy strategy with The Sims franchise, but this game released during a decade where video games were still being developed by actual video gamers and not people with an agenda or a focus on maximizing profits. That isn't to say that the game is objectively great, though, and unfortunately we can see modern EA and Maxis™ resorting to the classic greed they are known for by attempting to sell a nearly twenty-year-old video game for $20 USD full price. It isn't worth that price. It's more so worth it on a 50% sale, and if it was $10 USD instead, I'd be able to recommend it. The idea of SPORE™ is pretty unique in that not too many other video games have replicated it even to this day, and playing through it, you'll understand why that is. It can be very ambitious, where that ambition can be a video game's downfall. What we ultimately find with SPORE™ is similar to other projects with the same scope: it starts off strong where the developers could spend most of their time polishing, and quickly becomes worse in later phases as they get closer to deadlines or exhausting their budget. I remember some developers themselves even mentioned in interviews that they had a vision for the game but just couldn't meet what was marketed to the players, resulting in a game that actually wasn't too well received by those who anticipated it the most during its nine year development cycle. It's a game themed around the scientifically proven evolution of sentience as you control the abomination you designed to become the ultimate apex being, with the game getting rather convoluted the more you advance throughout the different stages of evolution. Initially a primitive being as the genesis, you eventually become an advanced, spacefaring race that can ally or violently compete with other creatures that, over a millennia, have also evolved alongside of your own creation. The game has this cool timeline that showcases the numerous generations that your creature experiences through each era, and depicts each alteration you've made to stay on top of the food chain, adding new body parts that can make you more powerful based upon a stats system while removing parts that have become obsolete. There's some other visual information like your dieting structure between carnivorous, omnivorous, and a lame vegetarian type of species that has chosen to ignore the fine delicacy of meat to prioritize grass, and these choices become permanent traits at some point in your continued evolution so that you focus on other decisions like how tolerated you are by the other creatures you share the area with. I think the "tribe" stage, or the third stage of the game, is really where you can begin to notice those aforementioned flaws with development in addition to just how silly the developers envisioned the tribal era with all of the dancing and whatnot. I think it's where I made it to all those years ago when I first tried SPORE™ and then I gave up. Powering through the game this time around, each stage results in the video game becoming drastically different from what it previously was, and it just creates a game that is essentially pieced together by a variety of minigames. Camera perspective changes, the genre of the game changes . . . the game basically evolves with your character into something different each new major era in the timeline and it doesn't allow the game to become robust and polished in what it was trying to do. Where it promised a scientifically rich, seamless evolution simulator spanning cell biology to galactic empires, it failed to offer that with how much feature creep there was in addition to lacking a unified vision. It's a very fractured experience with developers clearly becoming desperate to glue everything together to try and make a cohesive narrative. Each stage feels repetitive in how it is designed as well. It just boils down to three or so objectives: collect, fight, or befriend. The space stage in particular is very grindy with its missions and objectives when it was the one stage you looked forward to the most after millions of years of in-game time showing how your creature evolved to something intelligent enough to travel around space. The only part of the game that had any true depth was its character creator, and this is probably where developers spent most of their time in refining and offering players creativity in designing whatever they want. You can stretch bones to create a very lanky, slender creature, something short and stubby, something completely mismatched and just anatomically incorrect, etc., and it can make it pretty funny when you consider you're trying to create the ultimate being. There's numerous color schemes to choose from and plenty of body parts that you'll unlock between seven categories as you play the game. In a way, this character creator menu and tool actually overshadows the rest of the game because this is the only part about it that fulfills the promise of something expansive and unique. Starting the game in this character creator, you are tricked into having intrigue and hope that the rest of the game will hold up to its level of creativity until it quickly does not. People who are expecting a deep, evolution simulator with scientific accuracy, complex strategy, seamless progression and a robust late-game with plenty to do in between it all will be disappointed, for SPORE™ is not actually that type of game. The reality of it is that it is a lighter version of that simulator mechanics with stage-based minigames that are cartoonish and feel more arcade-styled with its systems. The mechanics are very simple overall and the game has a low difficulty challenge. Phases are very disconnected and the last-game is just too repetitive and grindy to be worth the time to get there. There was just too much tension and a failure between the visionary ambition and its practical execution, but the game does deserve some credit for its procedural generation, the technical innovation, and its creator tools. I remember SPORE™ being part of a controversy of that decade as well as it released with restrictive DRM, but so much for that movement gaining any sort of influence or momentum as we now see developers utilizing DRM that is even worse in 2026.

13 on sale2 answered “not sold”0 we did not ask
The 2 “not sold” markets are read from the Steam price pass of Sep 7: that day the store answered for this game elsewhere and gave no price in those. The 13 priced markets are the same rows as the table above — each the latest price we hold, dated here when it is older than that pass. The 0 marked “not asked” were not put to this store at all — either it has no storefront there or we do not collect it yet, and neither is a statement about the game. A refusal is a refusal on one day; a store can list a title again tomorrow.
