⋆。‧˚ʚ ୨ৎ ɞ˚‧。⋆ Be careful what you wish for, a devil might be listening! After changing dimensions through a lake by your house thanks to a wicked devil, you're now in the land of the dead, but there's a small problem: You are alive. You have to navigate this new alien world and to your luck, a handsome vampire lord has taken full credit for this mishap. But there's more! An adorable doll-guy and a ghost with a mysterious past are there for you too, in case you need a shoulder to lean on. Though maybe you cannot lean onto Ghostie... Anyways! Spooky Monster is both cozy and a thrilling otome game. You chat, you wander and you feel free all around until you get further into the story and see the men's yandere side. Though it's not excessive or heavy like its counterparts, darker elements are present in the game for genre's followers. You have one week before you leave this realm to return to your own, but will you be willing to leave? Or will there be other conditions that tie you here? With its beautiful art, decent story and darker elements with relatively short play time, Spooky Monster is among the VNs I'd recommend you to try. (Especially if you're looking for something more budget friendly. Even better if it's discounted.) Maybe the only downside of the game is that you cannot romance the devil. However it's still a decent game to have in your library.
What happens when a wish goes awry? :o

Introduction
Spooky Monster is an otome, dark fantasy visual novel developed by 雉野ハチ and published by VNka. You take on the role of an unnamed heroine whose name you can customize (I randomly chose Maisy) living on a farm with her younger brother, Alan. After Maisy and Alan have an argument, Maisy runs off towards the lake, and on a night which the moon shines bright, she makes a wish to not go home for a while. Without realizing it, Maisy's wish comes true, as a demon named Osbert kidnaps her to a world where demons, vampires, and other supernatural beings exist. Can Maisy find a way to return home, or will she end up falling for someone in this world, perhaps choosing to stay? As for the gameplay, it consists of choices, which appear during events as well as places where Maisy can visit. Depending on these choices, Maisy can end up on one of three routes: Cyril (the vampire who's a noble), Eleven (a zombie who wants to make friends), or Ghost (yup, a spirit who has amnesia). Cyril has two romance endings, Eleven has one romance ending and one friendship ending, and Ghost has one romance ending. There's also an ending in which Maisy doesn't end up with anyone. Plenty of CGs are present as well as a varied soundtrack although there's no voice acting. At the time of this review, Steam achievements aren't available and the game won't count towards a user's global total until it's out of "Steam is learning about this game".
Review
I'll admit that this visual novel didn't get on my radar until I noticed that a lot of friends wishlisted it. After getting a review copy, I read the store page description, which intrigued me and motivated me to give this game a try on the sooner side. XD The story has a bit of a slow start when Maisy leaves off in a huff over Alan arguing that she should find a boyfriend. However, events quickly ramp up when she's taken to another world by Osbert. Even though Osbert seemingly is helping Maisy, it turns out that he has an ulterior motive. Specifically, he wants to offer Maisy to Cyril, his vampire lord, as food. Thankfully, Cyril refuses, so Maisy is stuck in this other world until the moon is in a certain phase. Basically, she's stuck there for a week. This gives Maisy time to explore and meet other characters, like Eleven and the Ghost, as well as a few other NPCs. Maisy's interactions with them are funny at times although there are scary moments as well. Being dark fantasy, it shouldn't be a surprise that there are horror moments. Having explored all the routes and endings, I'll say that I liked that not all the endings are happy. Some can be quite horrific and bloody, so best be aware. For those looking for the happy endings,
pursue the Ghost's route and make a very specific choice or go for Eleven's route but be persistent (even though the latter doesn't have romance)
. As for the romance options, I liked all of them although the Ghost is my favorite, especially after finding out his true identity. As for the writing, I played the English version, and the translation is pretty good. I noticed a few sentences which sounded awkward, so it would help to have a native speaker proofread them to make for smoother reading. Still, the story is understandable enough. I should note, though, that in regards to the bonus stories that are unlocked after you complete certain endings, only the first one has English translation. It's unfortunate since I really would have loved to read these stories and get to know more about Cyril's, Eleven's, and the Ghost's pasts. With the art, it is gorgeous. The sprites are in the anime style that's typical for visual novels and the backgrounds are drawn and colored well. Especially, the CGs are well done, and there's a CG gallery from which to view them. Unfortunately, I couldn't take screenshots, probably due to the game engine's limitations. Otherwise, I would have loved to show them off, but I suppose that looking at the screenshots on the store page will have to do. XD In regards to the music, the tracks have a good variety. Most of them have that spooky, horror vibe, but a few have more of a light-hearted, even comedical at times, feel. As I mentioned earlier, no voice acting is present, but considering the price of this game, it's very fair, and I don't consider voice acting to be a necessity.
Conclusion
Would I recommend Spooky Monster? If you're looking for a horror otome game that's on the short side and you don't mind the lack of Steam achievements, then it's worth checking out. It was quite a delight to read through all the routes, and I happily would have bought this game for the amount of time that I got from it. It's definitely worth the price, but of course, you can choose to wait for a sale. Finally, I'd like to thank VNka for the review copy given to both my personal curator, The Introverted Gamer, and Otome Rakuen, where I help with reviews for otome games. Finished Spooky Monster today, so I thought I would share my thoughts on a few points. Overall, I think it is a fun title.
Setting / Story
I think the game has a nice setting and draws you in fairy fast. Fans of vampires, ghosts, etc will have some fun LIs to look forward to.
Characters
The game has 3 LIs. I liked them all a lot and they were all pretty different. I enjoyed not knowing how the LI Ghost
looked like
for a good portion of the game. That added some suspense. I think it is a bit of a shame that
Osbert
is not an LI. He is a very interesting character, so if the devs ever make DLC or a sequel would be great if he could be an LI too. The other NPCs were also entertaining.
Endings
The game features
6
endings. I enjoyed all of them. As a Yandere fan, I was hoping for some darker endings which the game does have, so that was nice. Fans who don't like bad endings might want to stay away from Ending
4
.
Art
I thought the art in the game looks nice and there are a decent number of CGs. Some have slight changes as well. My favorite CG was from ending
3
where MC
was sitting on Eleven's lap crying
. Loved this moment.
Gameplay
The game features a map and allows you to visit certain locations. This wasn't confusing or anything and I think for the most part it is fairly easy to plan which character you are trying to go for based on the locations you visit. I do recommend creating a few save files though to make obtaining endings a bit easier since you can load at certain choice points then instead of starting over.
Sound
The music was a good fit for a spooky setting. I enjoyed listening to the tracks and it didn't sound like elevator music / didn't need to mute anything.
Suggestions for Improvement
1) Add controller support. At the moment the game didn't play too well with a controller. 2) Setting Option to adjust features like sound level
Conclusion
The game was fairly short, as it only took me around 3 hours to finish. Despite the short length, I was able to fall for the characters fast and enjoy the world building. I think fans of Ephemeral would enjoy this title or fans looking for a "spooky" setting / something to play around Halloween time.
This was a fun otome visual novel with a unique monster-themed setting. The characters have distinct personalities, and some of them definitely have strong yandere vibes, which makes the routes more dramatic. The art is nice, and the CGs add a lot to the emotional moments. It’s not a huge game, but for fans of otome and dark fantasy it’s a very enjoyable experience.
Spooky Monster is a fantasy Otome set in a unique fantasy world, where the unknown can be much more dangerous than you think. One wrong mistake, and you just might not be returning home. And yes, that mistake includes falling in love with some cute, yet lonely bachelors. At the start of the game, you start off as a hard-working, yet ambitious young woman. Spending her life working on her farm with her brother has been great, but she decides to make a wish upon a nearby lake on a moonlit night. Unfortunately for our heroine, the legend isn’t necessarily true… But the lake connects to another world. Just as her wish is made, it is heard by a demon who drags her down into the lake - flipping her world, quite literally, and dragging her into an unfamiliar world filled with fantasy creatures. The wish has now turned into a binding contract with the demon, also known as Osbert, who does not intend to let you leave so easily. He harbors ulterior motives that you learn very, very quickly. Spooky Monster includes a cast of several (mostly) likeable characters, all with their own problems - some more severe than others - which our heroine just might be able to solve. But the number one goal intended for you here is to persuade the noble vampire, Cyril, to drink blood. Osbert wants to preserve the already endangered vampire race, and he’s willing to go to extreme lengths to achieve this, even abducting a human from their world… ahem. Other than Osbert, I genuinely really liked the whole cast. I originally thought I would join the “why isn’t the demon romanceable” crowd. But honestly? After meeting him, he can stay in the hot-but-not-romanceable bin. Even Patrick becomes likeable if you follow his story! When it comes to the controls for this one, I played on the steamdeck - and honestly, it wasn’t terrible and better than a lot of other VN I have played on it. I noticed a few issues, such as words being cut-off as if it was the end of the line of dialogue, and the second-half of the word being shown on the next line. Sometimes the heroine’s sprite also would bug out, with a clipping of her on the very bottom of the screen. These could very possibly be just steamdeck issues, however. Between each scene you are brought to a large map with several areas on it. You choose where to go and who to talk to by picking a location. It is often pretty easy to know where characters are by following their usual hangouts or just following where they mention in your last scene with them. However, I think it would be a great QOL to include icons for where characters are currently, as well as some kind of signal/warning when a selection will lead to the end of the story as there is more than one “no turning back” scenario, so I suggest regular saves. There is also a point where if you’re following Ghost and Eleven’s story, you will lose all affection with Cyril and I assume get locked out of his route entirely so those saves can be very, very important to prevent having to do a full replay for multiple endings. Spooky Monster has pretty art, I enjoyed the appearance of all of the characters, especially how unique some looked. Eleven (who I was quite fond of) has a cool design, notably more unique than the others. But even despite that everyone else looked great. Patrick’s design really caught me off-guard, but I enjoyed the details - even his mouth moved when he spoke, despite being wrapped up in bandages. The music was also fitting for the game, and honestly gave me the vibe taht this would be a cozy little play for halloween. The biggest issue I came across with Spooky monster was the script itself for a few reasons. The English translation is good. It’s understandable and I don’t have to drill my brain to try and work out what’s being said or happening, however, I think it would be right to assume the translation was done via AI, if not the proofreading was done through AI. A lot of sentences would just be written oddly, in a way that I don’t think would be how a native English speaker would say. On top of this, I noticed it was pretty common for the script to have people’s names typed incorrectly. For a large chunk of the game I noticed that people were calling Eleanor “Eleonor”, and Lianan Xi got extended a little to “Liannan” in one scene. I did enjoy the game enough to think quite positively after play, so this didn’t hinder it enough, but especially from the mistyped names, I did feel like it was constant and annoying enough with the “Eleonor” that it did pull me out of the game/immersion a little. I believe this all could be solved with an experienced proofreader checking over the script. Despite my above complaints, overall I really did quite enjoy my time playing Spooky Monster. The later you get into the game, the more enjoyable it becomes. I wish I had more time getting to know the characters as I didn’t feel as strongly as the heroine presented in their endings, because I felt I only really got a good chance to know Eleven. Especially considering… well, you don’t even get to learn anything about Ghost until near the end of the game. Cyril’s good ending was a little brutal, but enjoyable. However I didn’t feel as emotionally affected as I could have been with more time to know him. More time in the world and the characters would be one thing I’d have asked for, or at least some more time with Cyril so I can feel more deeply about him or at least understand the heroine’s feelings more. He had probably the most significant ending, but I enjoyed others more just because I felt I had more time to connect to the characters to a certain level. Spooky Monster is a fun, short and enjoyable Otome. It has its flaws, but considering the price for the content I personally can overlook them. For the price, I also think it’s a great deal. Depending on your reading speed you could easily get 3-4 hours of enjoyment out of a £5 purchase. If you like fantasy worlds and slightly darker themes, you could definitely enjoy Spooky Monster. Just be aware of the script errors/issues I mentioned before if they are something you’re likely to be put off by. I feel a lot more lenient on such things as long as I enjoy the game, personally. This might even be a solid pickup for a cozy little halloween night, as mentioned before - I definitely think it could add some extra enjoyment. I really enjoyed this otome visual novel. The characters were interesting, especially the love interests. Each route felt a bit different and the multiple endings made me curious to replay and see how things change depending on your choices. The CGs are pretty and fit the tone of the story well. If you like otome games with darker themes and supernatural romance, this one is definitely worth checking out.
