About
Your magic awakes in your new college town—and so does your heart! Can you discover who is trying to steal your power before it's too late?
Spellbound: Malachite Coven is an interactive romance novel by Erin Rowlands. It’s entirely text-based, 150,000 words and hundreds of choices, without graphics or sound effects, and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.
As you arrive at Jasper Falls College, you feel a strange magical power stirring within you. Soon, you’re invited to join the Malachite Coven, a secret group of mages who share your abilities. Your mother was part of the coven years ago—and now, so are you.
Choose your magical specialty: earth, air, fire, lightning, or water. Perform midnight rituals and pore over ancient grimoires full of powerful spells. Delve even deeper to uncover the past that your mother has concealed from you all your life.
But when someone steals the magic of a member of your coven, and it becomes clear that darker forces are at work in Jasper Falls. Can you help restore your friend’s power and find the culprit before your magic gets taken away too?
(And don’t forget to keep up with your classes—you might not be a mage for long!)
The pull of magic is strong, but the pull of your heart is stronger—especially when you’re growing closer to the other members of the coven every day. Which one of them will capture your heart?
There’s Jamie Arnoult, flirtatious and wealthy, child of Jasper Falls’s mayor. With devastatingly sharp fashion sense, perfectly-styled brown hair, high cheekbones, and sparkling emerald eyes, Jamie has a reputation as a heartbreaker—but there’s more to Jamie than meets the eye.
Or there’s Blake Evander, competitive and driven in the classroom and sports field alike—nobody else could possibly be the leader of the Malachite Coven. Blonde and athletic with a lean toned frame, startlingly deep blue eyes, and a baseball cap for every occasion—but cleans up very nicely when it’s time for the college gala.
Or there’s gentle artist Kit Reynolds, who has broad shoulders, a warm brown complexion, and an even warmer smile; generous and friendly, with a quirky fashion sense and the kind of tender heart that hates to even step on a snail on a woodland hike.
Lennon Kobayashi is tall and brooding, always dressed in black with heavy metal playing on headphones—and yet deeply thoughtful about social issues, and infinitely gentle as a partner.
But what if you choose River Ortiz, the sweet and studious librarian with lovely wavy black hair who loves soft comfortable flannels? River doesn’t even know that magic exists—but has a shelf full of books about crystals and ley lines. Could you possibly share your secret?
Play as male, female, or nonbinary; gay, straight, or bi.
Romance the athletic coven leader, the flirtatious heartbreaker, the friendly artist, the brooding rebel, or the sweet librarian.
Grow closer to your mother and seek help from the older generation of mages, or strike out on your own.
Dress to the nines to attend a lavish gala!
Balance your coven and your classes—and don’t fall behind in either!
Sparks fly when you mix magic and romance!

There’s no personality here - no heat, no emotional tether pulling you into the world, the characters, or the magic. It’s a lifeless procession of names saying things according to their tags: athletic, creative, haughty, etc. Six hours in and I still feel no connection to this coven, this setting, or the magic (which, by the way, I still haven’t actually used). If you loved Hunter: The Reckoning – The Beast of Glenkildove, which had soul, verve, and UHMPH, steer clear of this quota-filling drivel.
First and foremost, I want to acknowledge that the writing is well done, and the story itself is fine. However, in a game like this, the characters are what truly make or break the experience for me, and, to be honest, I didn’t find any of them likable. In fact, my feelings toward them were firmly set within the first few minutes of reading...SPOILERS:
The main RO's pretty much take the MC and force them into a ritual under false pretenses. The ritual is supposed to save the MC and give them magical powers, but the way they went about it was just absurd to me. Even the characters are like, "We should have done it differently." Then why didn't you? "We didn't want the MC to run away." Which even when the MC does try to run during the ritual, they are forced back into it no matter what. The whole situation could have gone differently with good communication and explanation.
Despite the unlikable characters—trust me, their issues throughout the story only make them less and less appealing to me—the mystery and overall plot remain at least interesting when you're not dealing with them. However, even with solid writing and a decent enough story, the fact that I find myself rolling my eyes or skipping dialogues because I've simply had enough of the characters is reason enough for me not to recommend this game.
我还挺喜欢这种魔法校园设定的, 但是文笔生硬,并没有感受到个性,每个角色只是根据标签来活动,包括主角。看似选择很多,实际上还是相对比较线形
It's not bad, but not great, either. In many ways, it just sort of is. It's short, and feels like a part one - the rules of magic are left vague, despite the game being entirely about magic, at least in theory. It also feels like there should be a lot of options for polyamory in this, but there aren't. It's kind of a Poor Man's Keeper Of the Day And Night. It's worth the sale price - but doesn't clear being "worth it" by a huge margin, and I'd recommend spending the money on the Keeper series instead. But, if you're looking for something light, this may be worth a read.
Honestly this was pretty good, well put together and the dialogue between the friends was pretty funny to me. I really enjoyed it.
The writing itself is quite straightforward. It has a bit of everything - mystery, romance, magic, school life. However, it really is a bit of everything. It doesn’t explore more in-depth on any one of the genres. The genre it most focuses on would be romance. All in all, I would say the writer could have been more descriptive in general. Gameplay also needs to be refined and better focused. However, the story kept me entertained enough (I’m a sucker for romance), thus I’ll give it a positive review.
honestly everything moves way too fast I barley knew the characters problems seem to be so easily resolved doesn't have enough build up imo the interactions between characters are a bit of a let down as well also for a magic game there is so little magic no point in choosing elements or whatever i don't even remember it making a difference i think i used it twice? maybe
It's a meh book. The story is very straightforward, and the characters don't have much depth. The romance is pretty rushed, but I guess for the price, it's okay.
A bit short and sweet, it feels a bit different than other interactive fiction games I've played. I like the characters and I think this game offers plenty of good choice, but the end feels somewhat abrupt- at least the two times I've gone through it by the time of this review, the end of the epilogue sort of left me wondering what the fallout of the actions I took would be, but it's sort of like I only get half of what I would expect from an epilogue. Still, the romance is cute, I agree with another review that said there was an odd case of 'cell phone distraction syndrome' of sorts whenever there was romantic tension to be had, and because the story feels so short it feels like the romance comes a bit fast too. That being said this story has such a good setup for at least some polyamory, and I was really surprised when it wasn't an option. But I only paid about $5 USD for this game, and for that I absolutely got my money's worth. It's cute, short, and sweet, well written, and a good story, I look forward to the next game they write- especially if they can improve upon the foundations made in this game.
I enjoyed “Spellbound: Malachite Coven” and found it engaging enough to stay up late completing it. While it has its strengths, such as beautiful writing and vibrant characters, it also has some aspects that might not work for everyone. (7/10) While the story is compelling, its pacing can feel a bit rushed at times. For example, you might find yourself contemplating kissing someone before getting to the point where that feels natural, or perhaps the plot pushes forward a little too quickly at times and almost seems to skip past the action-packed parts. Another drawback has to do with the romance system; while many characters display interest in you, the game ultimately locks you into a single partner rather than allowing you to explore alternatives. It’s a limitation that feels at odds with the number of potential romantic connections woven into the narrative. And to top it off, the game concludes rather abruptly, leaving you wishing for just a bit more closure. One particularly amusing quirk is the constant phone interruptions; just when things are about to get interesting with your potential partners, someone always seems to call or text, pulling you away. Indeed, people must be trying to reach you or the other mages near constantly for that to keep happening. Finally, the romance itself is sweet and charming but leans toward the lighter side. If you prefer a more understated approach to intimate moments, this works in the game’s favor. However, those looking for something deeper or more passionate might find it a bit reserved. (7/10)
