The strategic battles in this cute game are pretty tough, but a lot of fun. It's an interesting sort of turn-based strategy where all the individual parts are simple, but add up to a surprising amount of depth. You brew a minion, send it into battle, it has a simple ability, and that clashes against the enemy's ability. What's really cool is that you can mix each minion's ability with a Tea Princess's special brewing type, which can give them two abilities to make them even more powerful. I'm only a third or so through the game, but I'm loving the characters and the ways they interact. Tea vs. Coffee sounds silly until you add in all the political intrigue and nuance that the writers inject into the story. And the Tea Princesses are all very love-able, even when they don't always get along. Story and strategy are the two pillars of this kind of game and this one does well at both. If you like the Tea vs Coffee premise, and you like simple but interesting turn-based strategy gameplay, I can recommend this one. For full disclosure, I backed this game on kickstarter. I'll try to remember to update this review once I finish the whole thing.
Came for the cute tea vs coffee theme, stayed for the amazing interpersonal character conflict. Every character has a uniquely developed personality and while these many personalities often clash, they all make sense from each individual character's perspective and background, resulting in dialogue which feels very real and well thought-out. As for the gameplay, the developers did an amazing job of making most levels start by feeling as if you have been put in an impossible situation, but then as you play it out you slowly start to see the path to victory as you learn how your units interact. While each individual unit is simple, the combos you can perform with other units combined with each princess's unique brewing ability make for a feeling of constant discovery and experimentation. By the last third of the game, I probably spent more time in the first round of each level than the rest of rounds combined as I examined units, princesses, and the map to determine what sort of combinations I wanted to try out.
Fun? Yes. Adorable? Yes. Challenging? Yes. The premiere tea-vs-coffee strategy game the discerning hot-beverage drinker has been needing. Seriously, this game is equal parts adorable, fun, and challenging. The story is interesting, and the tea-vs-coffee political intrigue gets quite intense. The characters are compelling, each with a distinctive, but likable personality and different abilities in-game. You need to make use of all of them to ensure victory, especially later in the game. Overall, I'd wholeheartedly recommend this game to anyone, whether you're a casual gamer or seeking a serious challenge.
I really love this game! I's cute as heck, it's got a charming theme (I mean, I'm a coffee-drinker at my core so morally speaking I'm against it, but I would still die for Black Rose), and the game has a nice variety of distinct and adorable units on both sides. Would strongly recommend!
The visual style is one of the main reasons that made me backed it on Kickstarter.
I played this game on itch and beat it, but I loved it so much I got the Steam version so I can try and beat it again but get achievements! I love this game so much! From the art, music, and gaming mechanics, everything about this game is great!
a cute, fun game (excepting all the war crimes) and shockingly challenging, with a good amount of content and a genuinely fantastic story.
Coffee? Tea? or perhaps Melee? In 3HG's most ambitious project to date, Sovereign Tea offers a unique Tactical Strategy adventure with a focus on unit-to-unit combat and resource management. Whether you're new to the genre or a seasoned veteran, this game will present a stimulating blend of challenge and catharsis to your experience. The tutorial is intuitive and the first levels offer plenty of room to catch and correct mistakes. There's even a hint function before each skirmish. However, out of pride, I didn't really check it. That is, until around the end of the game. Much to my surprise, they weren't step-for-step guides, but little details to keep in mind that may inspire a new strategy. There were a couple of instances where I knew I had a winning strategy, but I needed to grind through a some extra turns to yield results. Luckily, battles can be revisited (reenacted?) and if I were so inclined, I could try new loadouts or beat my turn record. The characters are written with such detail, they practically read with their own voice. It was fun hearing about a character and speculating how they'd behave or interact with others when they're finally introduced (based on what I know about their namesake). I may be biased as a Beverage Enthusiast, but Sovereign Tea will sit snugly in my top 3 favorite games to come out this year. I look forward to their next project!
The artwork is adorable and charming. The music is absolutely on point for setting the tone and atmosphere. The story has a good level of intrigue with compelling characters. The game play is challenging which made completing the game feel all the more rewarding.
