Solemn Knights: Entirely Ours Definitive Edition – A Proper Look

Introduction
Solemn Knights: Entirely Ours Definitive Edition is an indie turn-based RPG that aims to capture the feel of old-school tactical games but with a modern indie touch. On the surface, it looks like a solid medieval fantasy adventure with methodical combat, exploration, and a slow-burn narrative. However, after spending time with it, it’s clear that while there are good ideas here, the execution stumbles in some major areas—especially when it comes to the story, character development, and lackluster ending.

History and Development
The original Solemn Knights: Entirely Ours was a small indie release that didn’t make much noise. The “Definitive Edition” was supposed to refine the experience, fixing balance issues, adding content, and improving the game overall. While some mechanics have been cleaned up, the biggest flaws—particularly in storytelling and character development—remain untouched. The game seems to have been made by a small team, and while that’s always something to respect, it also means some aspects feel half-baked. There’s ambition here, but it doesn’t fully come together.

Gameplay
If you like slow, tactical turn-based combat, you might find Solemn Knights engaging. If not, you’ll probably find it tedious.

Combat: The turn-based battles emphasize positioning and resource management. Healing is scarce, and abilities are limited, making each encounter a test of endurance rather than just strategy. Some battles are genuinely fun, but others feel like a war of attrition that drags on longer than necessary.
Exploration: There are secrets and hidden items scattered throughout, but the level design is fairly linear. If you take the time to search, you’ll find useful upgrades, but don’t expect a massive open world with tons of side content.
Progression: The game keeps things simple. You level up, gain new abilities, and can slightly customize your character’s build. Unfortunately, the depth is lacking, and many abilities feel either overpowered or completely useless.
A major issue is difficulty spikes. Some fights will be a complete slog, and others will suddenly feel unwinnable unless you’re perfectly prepared. The worst part? The ridiculous timed escape sequence near the end. After all the slow, deliberate combat, the game suddenly expects you to rush through a segment where you can easily fail just because you made a minor mistake. It feels out of place and poorly designed.

Story and Characters
This is where Solemn Knights really falls apart. The setup is intriguing—Thelonius wakes up in an unfamiliar world with no memory of how he got there. The problem is that the game never truly develops this premise into anything meaningful.

Thelonius (Protagonist): He remains a blank slate for the entire game. There’s barely any personal growth, no emotional weight, and no meaningful choices that shape his journey.
Party Members: They exist. That’s about it. They don’t evolve, they barely interact in meaningful ways, and by the end, you won’t care about any of them.
The Ending: To call it lackluster would be putting it nicely. After slogging through difficult battles and a nonsensical timed section, you’re left with an ending that feels rushed, incomplete, and unsatisfying. It doesn’t feel like a true conclusion—more like the developers ran out of time and just threw something together.
This is a real shame because the world feels like it should have depth. The problem is that the story never truly digs into its themes, characters, or setting in a meaningful way. It’s all surface-level.

World and Atmosphere
Visually, Solemn Knights goes for a pixel-art style that works well enough. The environments are dark and moody, fitting the medieval fantasy setting. It’s not the most detailed pixel art you’ll see, but it does the job. The soundtrack is one of the stronger aspects. It’s melancholic and atmospheric, adding to the sense of isolation and mystery. However, by the time you reach the end, the music won’t be enough to salvage the experience.

Final Thoughts
Solemn Knights: Entirely Ours Definitive Edition had me hooked for most of my playthrough. The turn-based combat was enjoyable, and the world had just enough mystery to keep me engaged. The journey itself was solid, but the lack of character development started to stand out the longer I played. The protagonist and party members never really evolved beyond their initial introductions, making their struggles feel somewhat distant rather than personal. And when I finally reached the ending, it left me feeling unsatisfied—not because it was bad, but because it felt like there should have been more. The game also suffers from too many random encounters, which, while manageable, sometimes make exploration feel like a chore rather than an adventure. The timed escape sequence near the end was frustrating rather than thrilling, an unnecessary difficulty spike that felt out of place. Still, I have to acknowledge that this is a free game on Steam, and considering that, it’s a respectable effort. It’s not without its flaws, but I did enjoy my time with it. I just wish the story had gone deeper, that the characters had more growth, and that the ending had been more rewarding. It was fine, but I walked away feeling like it could have been something greater.

I'm leaving a positive recommendation because I want to see other RPGmaker devs succeed. I would definitely recommend this game for other RPGmaker developers to get a broader sense of what makes RPG's tick and what makes them break. Overall, despite the above-averge surface-level polish, this game feels like someone's first game and first story as gameplay and story elements feel disjointed and not synergized as a cohesive whole. My big question is, am I the only player to have made it to the very ending on a blind playthrough? This game is VERY difficult.
I got 5 hours in and for a free game this has legs and seems to stand its ground okay but there are some design faux pas that make this game a bit of a irksome interaction. Update: I got to the end and there is an Endgame/ New Game +. You can get softlocked out of some quests and weapons before ending the game w/o warning unfortunately. You will get access again via post game & New Game +? Pros: Story is generic but serviceable. Unfortunately you don't get a big bad early into proceeding but the main hero shows agency and brings you along for a harrowing journey. Characters seem nice and the writing works for what's given. Same with the world building. Combat and Character Growth are okay but the balancing is slightly odd. Somehow has controller support and fullscreen at least. I like the characters for the most part. They seem believable and likable. The characters are good but the story they are going through sometimes makes some bizarre decisions and goes in weird directions. Cons: Encounter Rate is a b****. So much random battle. Experiencing Performance issues on an RPG Maker Game has me vexed but it also seems my graphics card doesn't want to bother with this game. In like the 5th city I ran to after capturing that thief inventor guy, you can get softlocked in the bottom left of the map. You can run over some enemies and get bodied by others if you're not careful. Grinding is necessary but the game doesn't really consistently give you the resources that make that easy. However, if you just fight everything that comes your way, you'll eventually become capable of overcoming whatever the game throws at you. As mentioned above, you can get softlocked out of some quests and weapons before ending the game w/o warning unfortunately. But you can eventually come back to finish things up for the Post Game/New Game + However, each level gained restores your health which makes leveling worth it. Problem is when you finally unlock magic, you can't restore MP with leveling like you do HP and MP restorative items seem rarer than HP and some enemies don't go down easy w/o Magic. Also the encounter rate gets kinda high. There are also some graphical glitches with the text that make certain words or sentences hard to read. Here are the story stuff that kinda made me a bit WTF Spoiler Warning: [spoilers] 1) You beat the last primordial being and the town with the guinea pig and ultimate weapons location get's attacked ad you're $*** out of luck if you didn't get a chance to finish the quests there. There are also at least 2 to 3 other quests I still had there as well as a chance to join some guilds. No warning from the game about this till its too late. 2)Final dungeon has Astoria destroyed, it's people dead, and we didn't get a chance to learn much about it or the people of the kingdom. It is a bit haunting and sad but it also feels a like a bit of a waste. 3) The stupidest JRPG plot twist outside of Star Ocean 3's the world is an MMO and FF7R's this is a sequel remake using time travel, Theo and Yuri's names were switched at birth? So the prophecy was meant for Theo who is actually Yuri and Yuri is actually Theo. And then they switch names and Theo Yuri (Black Sauske with spear) goes from a Dark Knight to a Paladin and does a Cecil Harvey but driver's licenses and names with Kain because f*** you. Why was this necessary? It doesn't change much or shift anything other than remind us that they need to go to the courthouse and DMV to change their IDs that they're switching names. This is so stupid and pointless. 4) Sidenote: I only found two ultimate weapon recipes. One for Theo Yuri (Black Sauske with Spear) and one for Sareath (Healer Lady and potential love interest)? No love for Yuri Theo, Protagonist guy I've been following for 99% of this game. WTF guys?! 5) Mayor randomly decides to poison the towns water supply and hold people, (including Sareath, Healer lady and potential love interest?) hostage. There's no elaboration on why he's doing this. He's not even working with the main big bad which would've at least been interesting but I don't think there was ever an established motivation for them to suddenly break bad. Like how do you get money or power poisoning a town? Are you in a death cult? Did Sareath (I don't recall how to spell her name, I'm sorry.) refuse to go out with you after you refused to help her town? Why be that big a ♥♥♥♥? 6) I got ending B which seemed to consist of Yuri Theo and Theo Yuri fighting the snake guy twice. Once with the party and again after escaping the castle, forcing Ark and Sareath (She who heals you) to leave the party and the two knights avenge their fallen kingdom. Defeating the great darkness and the big Deus Ex Machina Angel that revealed the Theo Yuri prophecy revelation promises to help the kingdom rebuild to restore it. The ending is kinda butt. There's no closure on the journey and relationship with Ark and Sareath, the world they were in, the journey they went through or why this deity needed to go into another world to find a hero to fight the great darkness. We don't even get an elaboration on why Theo Yuri & Yuri Theo were taken into this world in the first place. Everyone in the kingdom is dead and we're not sure if this god is intending on bringing everyone back to life or just get new people into the kingdom or what? We don't see the other people that were helped or affected by Yuri Theo & the twist kinda makes Yuri Theo (OG protagonist) feel a bit sidelined. I guess there are other endings but everything about how I reached this one just makes me a little exhausted and disappointed in this game. It's fun, it's free but damn this feels like a fumble. [/spoilers] I got 5 hours about of free JRPG goodness. It's fine for what it is and gives you a good JRPG booster for a small amount of time investment. Again, the characters also work for what you need but in the context of the story, it feels like a lot of wasted potential. (Which actually does remind me of most Square Enix JRPGs. Love the characters but the story just makes me wish I didn't bother getting invested.) It's fine for what it is just don't expect a graceful story landing and don't buy the $50 version still on Steam.
RPG Maker strikes again! "Solemn Knights: Entirely Ours Definitive Edition" is one of hundreds of low effort RPG Maker flips spamming the store. RPG Maker is designed specifically to be used by children, in their own words, "These easy to use tools are simple enough for a child". It's just a bunch of canned assets mixed with cringey high school anime club fan fiction. This is another painfully generic RPG Maker asset flip here on Steam, but at least the developer didn't make this one about himself and his imaginary girlfriend. Instead in this high school anime club dropout fan-fiction plot, the author pretends to be a knight from a fantasy world who is then teleported into a completely different fantasy world and engages in the usual crap Final Fantasy ripoff JRPG combat that RPG Maker can't even do a halfway decent job of ripping off. It's all so tiresome. Like other RPG Maker "games", the game engine is extremely low quality. It displays badly in fullscreen, and has no real graphics settings or HD support. It's not up to the same standard we expect from a modern PC game. We can make the argument that construction kit toys like RPG Maker are intended for making small games and demos and things to pass around with friends. They shouldn't be used as a substitute or "Ez-mode" to allow unqualified amateurs to LARP that they're real, actual game developers. This is typical RPG Maker shovelware... It uses copy and pasted pixelcrap art, looks bad and plays even worse. This construction kit is designed for children is trash, and products made with it offer no value to PC gamers. Now onto pricing and value. This is "free" enough (not every "free" game in the "free" section is truly free, there's usually some hidden price tag), at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good, and the cost of a game is more than just financial, your time is valuable too. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 130 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB shows this peaked at only 3 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Given that this free game won't increase your game collector count, is it worth your time to add it to your library? I can't suggest people should download this, there's too many quality issues. Games don't exist in a vacuum... PC gamers have thousands of better options over this.
