SNOWY MEMORIES is a moody, thoughtfully constructed indie title that blends 2D action, survival mechanics, and narrative-driven exploration into a cohesive and atmospheric experience. Developed by quan home and published by 糕薯科技 alongside 拾光创梦, the game positions itself at the intersection of science fiction mystery and methodical gameplay, favoring tension, planning, and discovery over constant spectacle. From the outset, it establishes a quiet, somber tone that invites players to slow down, observe their surroundings, and piece together meaning from fragments rather than relying on explicit exposition. The story centers on Han Xue, an android who awakens from a fragmented dream into a world that feels partially broken, both technologically and emotionally. Reality and memory blur together as she navigates environments shaped by advanced AI systems and abandoned human ambition. The narrative unfolds gradually through environmental cues, cryptic dialogue, and collectible records, encouraging players to actively engage with the world’s lore. Themes of identity, memory, and artificial consciousness permeate the experience, giving the game a reflective quality that lingers beneath its mechanical challenges. Gameplay is built around a careful balance of combat, exploration, and survival-oriented decision-making. Movement and platforming follow familiar 2D action conventions, but encounters are designed to be deliberate rather than chaotic. Ammunition and resources are limited, pushing players to think before engaging enemies instead of relying on brute force. Each confrontation carries weight, as careless play can quickly deplete vital supplies, turning even minor mistakes into meaningful setbacks. This restraint adds tension and reinforces the game’s survival focus. Exploration follows a structure reminiscent of Metroidvania design, with interconnected areas that gradually open as new tools, upgrades, and knowledge are acquired. Backtracking is encouraged, not as filler, but as a natural extension of discovery, allowing previously inaccessible spaces to reveal new narrative or mechanical layers. Inventory management plays a central role in this loop, forcing players to make difficult choices about what to carry, what to discard, and how to prepare for unknown threats ahead. This persistent pressure transforms inventory space into a strategic resource rather than a convenience. Combat and environmental puzzles are tightly interwoven. Enemies often interact with their surroundings in ways that require awareness and positioning, and some obstacles can only be overcome through creative use of limited tools. Rather than isolating puzzles into separate sections, the game integrates them directly into exploration and combat spaces, maintaining immersion and reinforcing the sense that the world operates as a cohesive system. Progress feels earned through understanding and adaptation rather than through raw reflexes alone. Visually, SNOWY MEMORIES adopts a detailed, anime-inspired art style infused with cold, cyberpunk aesthetics. Stark lighting, glowing interfaces, and shadow-heavy interiors create a sense of isolation and quiet unease. The environments feel lived-in despite their abandonment, suggesting histories that the player uncovers piece by piece. The presentation complements the narrative’s introspective tone, making the world feel melancholic rather than overtly hostile. Sound design further enhances the atmosphere. Subdued music, ambient mechanical noises, and subtle audio cues support exploration without overwhelming it. Silence is used effectively, allowing tension to build naturally as players move through unfamiliar spaces. When music does surface, it tends to underline emotional moments rather than dictate them, reinforcing the game’s preference for subtlety over melodrama. One of SNOWY MEMORIES’ defining strengths is its trust in the player. The game rarely overexplains its systems or story, instead allowing understanding to emerge through play. While this approach may feel opaque to some, it rewards patience and curiosity with a deeper sense of immersion and thematic coherence. The learning curve can be demanding, particularly in early hours, but mastery brings a strong sense of agency and accomplishment. Overall, SNOWY MEMORIES stands out as a focused, atmospheric 2D action-adventure that prioritizes mood, strategy, and narrative depth over accessibility or constant action. It is a game that asks players to engage thoughtfully with its systems and story, offering a rewarding experience for those willing to embrace its deliberate pace. For fans of sci-fi exploration, survival mechanics, and introspective storytelling, it delivers a compelling journey through a world shaped by memory, machines, and quiet existential tension. Rating: 6/10
You wake up as an android from a strange dream, and things only get stranger. Your supervisor summons you and reveals that it knows about the dreams you’ve been having. Before you can react, a trap activates, tearing you into pieces and discarding what remains as trash. Fortunately, a mysterious voice contacts you and tells you there is a repair bed nearby that can restore you to your former self. Now, you have a score to settle. At first, you’ll notice that the main menu is displayed in an Asian language, and you won’t find any language options in the settings no matter how you search. Strangely, the language selection—English included—only appears when you click the first option, which starts a new game. Your first task is to choose one of two available characters, while the other two are unlocked by achieving the bad and true endings. This choice is purely cosmetic and does not affect gameplay. The second obstacle becomes obvious when you start playing: gamepad support is missing. You can play with a keyboard, but it feels awkward because you need quick access to abilities to handle the challenges the game throws at you. The biggest issue is shooting; you can fire diagonally, but it feels clunky and imprecise. You can “plant” your feet to stop moving while aiming, but it requires pressing multiple buttons for something that should be simple. Although the mouse works alongside the keyboard, it only offers basic and secondary fire for each button and does not allow full aiming control. Movement follows standard platformer controls: left and right to move, up and down to climb ladders, and action buttons for jumping, running, and dodging. All actions consume stamina, especially dodge, which uses nearly half your stamina bar. This means you must dodge sparingly and only when necessary during combat. The gameplay itself is a surprise. Although it looks like an action platformer, it borrows heavily from survival games where resource management is essential. Your inventory is limited, and if you’ve played similar games, you already know the dilemma: you must leave something behind, use it immediately, or drop something you don’t need. Storage boxes are scattered throughout the world, allowing you to store unused items. These boxes are linked, so each one contains the same inventory, but you still need to backtrack frequently. Inventory management is also cumbersome because everything must be done manually. For example, your ammo won’t automatically reload when you run out. You must open the inventory, click on the ammo pack, and manually assign it to your primary or secondary weapon—while time continues to run. Everything occupies an inventory slot, including ammo, which has a limited capacity per slot. Add healing items and special gadgets, and you can quickly run out of space. Gadgets are essential because progress depends on them. The first provides a small mini-map and flashing circles that mark enemy locations. The second is a knife that serves as a melee weapon to conserve ammo and cut wires blocking your path. The third removes harmful fog. The map follows a metroidvania pattern, filling in as you explore. Icons mark everything you need: containers, locked doors, storage boxes, save points, and more. Save points, however, do not restore health. You must use a health pack or find a repair bed, which only appears in a few rare locations. Because resources and healing are limited, enemies do not respawn after you kill them—unless they are part of an event. They also don’t drop items, encouraging melee combat to conserve ammunition. However, melee is difficult because it consumes stamina. Dodge uses one chunk, and each melee attack uses another, leaving you quickly exhausted. Overall, the game is inexpensive and has some charm, but it is not enjoyable without a gamepad. There are also some frustrating bugs, especially the non-working full-screen mode: it works initially but reverts to windowed mode the first time you switch screens.
