Snips & Snails is an otome visual novel developed and published by Lacydigital. You take on the role of Lacy Snailes (whose name is customizable - otherwise, the game takes on the default, Lacy), a university student who runs an Arcane magic shop with her dad. The Arcane are supernatural beings, such as werewolves and vampires, and until the Reveal Act was passed, the Arcane had to hide in secrecy. However, now they are free to be out in public without being feared from humans. After Lacy has her dream/nightmare about her mom, who passed away years ago, Lacy goes to her classes as usual. As she's in the library in the afternoon, a student in her math class, Sullivan, approaches her, with the excuse of returning her notebook that she lost. He wants her to tutor him in the class, and Lacy agrees, despite her insistence that she isn't great at the subject. Once she arrives at Sullivan's house, Lacy meets Sullivan's two brothers as well as their ghost friend. As Lacy is encouraged to be more social by her dad and Arabella, her best friend, Lacy figures that this is a good opportunity to become friends with the guys and perhaps, even romance may blossom. I'll end my story synopsis here to avoid spoilers and all that. As for the gameplay, there are multiple choices presented throughout the story. The choices in the prologue will determine whose route you go on: Yuuto (the incubus), Quinn (the vampire), Sullivan (the caster), or Eryck (the ghost). Once you're on a route, then you'll go through chapters one through five. The choices you make determine whether you get the romance, happy ending plus the epilogue or the friendship/sad ending. In addition, there are bonus stories for all four guys that can be accessed as free DLC. There are Steam achievements although at the time of this review, they won't count towards a user's global total until the game is out of "profile features limited". Also, there are a few CGs (mainly, of Lacy kissing the guys) although no CG gallery. (Well, there are only four CGs in total, so that is understandable.) There are a few tracks although no voice acting. Now that I've gone over the story and gameplay, I'll move onto my critique. Snips & Snails is the developer's first commercial visual novel (I think), and as the store page described the presence of magic (which I always find to be interesting), I wanted the opportunity to try out this game. First, I enjoyed the story. It starts off a bit slow as we're introduced to Lacy and the four love interests. However, once you're on the chapters themselves, the pace starts to pick up. The love interests vary in personality, such as the hot-tempered Yuuto (who only seems that way initially because he and Lacy had a bad first encounter) to the mysterious Eryck (whose past is unknown). I like how Lacy interacts with the characters and how even once you're on a path, Lacy still interacts with the other characters. Back to the story itself, I enjoyed a certain part where
Lacy's Magicka powers (because her mom had such powers, there was a chance that Lacy could, too) awaken and how, depending on which route Lacy was on, she would have a specific power
. Also, as this visual novel is labeled as "adult only", there is 18+ content. It's mostly confined to optional
described consensual sex between Lacy and the guy she chooses
although this can be skipped. While I found some routes to be on the sweeter, slower side (such as Quinn's), others were more exciting (such as Sullivan's). Again, it depends on what happens at a specific point in the story. As for the writing, I felt that it had some pacing issues. For example, an event would happen and then either, it would be the next day or a couple of weeks after. It's not too big of a deal, though, since the story would go a little too slowly if it were to detail day-by-day. Also, I didn't notice any typos although it could have used some commas in certain places. (This might be the editor/proofreader in me being a little nitpicky, but it doesn't distract from enjoying the story itself.) As for the gameplay, I encountered a couple of issues. First, in regards to getting the romance ending for the guys, despite that I would follow a walkthrough for getting it and I would get that ending in-game, the corresponding Steam achievement wouldn't unlock. However, if I followed the walkthrough but simply went with alternative options for the last two or three choices (for the most part), I would then get that ending. I don't know if this is a problem exclusive to me since I haven't heard about anyone else encountering this, but I thought I should mention it. Also, when I played Eryck's bonus story, I encountered a Ren'Py exception error issue. However, I simply clicked on the "Ignore" button and then I could continue to play the story. It's a minor thing, but again, I thought I should mention it. As for the art, I liked the design of the sprites. They're well done, and I liked the use of colors. The backgrounds are pretty basic, but they fit well with the story's location. As for the CGs, they are beautiful. I like looking at kissing CGs and only wish I had taken those screenshots. However, they're very sweet and they show how close Lacy becomes to her guy. Finally, as for the soundtrack, there are only a few tracks, so there's not a lot of variety. However, there wasn't a point where the music suddenly stopped. (Some visual novels have that issue, so it's good that this one didn't.) I wish there had been one or two more tracks, but for the developer's first visual novel, I feel that the tracks present were sufficient and placed well with the mood of the story. Would I recommend Snips & Snails? For the developer's first commercial visual novel, I feel that it is well done, overall. It could use a bit of fixing with the above issues that I mentioned, but otherwise, I enjoyed the story a lot. The romances were wonderful and sweet, and I just have to say this. I'm glad I saved Eryck's route for last because his route has the most emotional feels. XD For the asking price, I'd say it's worth getting, as it took me over 8 hours to 100% complete the game. (That's with using the skip feature and playing through the epilogues and side stories.) Of course, you can wait to get it on a sale. Finally, I want to thank the developer for this review copy and hope to have the opportunity to play future visual novels from them. ^^
Flying free and writing reviews solely for The Introverted Gamer.
We is gooda after we playa tha gaima! Anyway, this game isn't bad. I mean I read all the GOOD routes... I dislike tragic or bad ends, so you wont ever see me do that. Mwahah. Right well... It is what you think. You have a female MC (Main Character) and she meets four "brothers"... Then you can choose whom to get with and make choices to see where you end up. There is also an epilogue and DLC... DLC is like an extra story... A wee story... Eryck's crashes -> just a heads up. (This was fixed already in an update.) IT'S... The game play... It's sorta peaceful. Like it's not dramatic or anything like that... It's just... Pleasant tone? I mean there is some stuff, but it wont hurt you in anyway... Also, maybe if I was younger I would enjoy this game more... Still didn't annoy me to read it. I had my fun moments with it. Guys (my opinion): Eryck -> He is one of a kind. I feel like his story gets cut short and it never gets to a point where you can do lewd stuff with him. Don't worry, I wrote him an ending like that. ;) Sullivan -> Blonde and I guess he is a good boy? I can't really say anything about him... He is just normal... Why did he go into the room by himself instead of asking his GF for it? Meh. Yuuto -> The Yakuza. Not really... But he looks like it... UM... I am guessing the mean guy who calms down... He is okay too... Shouldn't have played Eryck's route first... He is like the true route for me. Quinn -> Okay, the cute and shy one... That one wassssssss fine too. I thought his expressions were adorable. Also, the MC gets different powers on different routes... But on Yuuto's route... She doesn't do anything with her power AND some beep at school really take well to being slapped! That was... Interesting... Mkay... That's enough for you... OH AND YEAH! There is one CG for kissy kiss scenes. I thought the open mouth on Eryck's kiss was funny... Ah sheep, I forgot there were lewd scene. Okay so they are fine. Not overly detailed and NO, you don't have to read them... But why wouldn't you? :> Thank you for the casual fun read. YEAH! :D =) >:3
What can I say! I enjoyed this game a lot!!! Finished both endings for one LI
Quinn
and he is sooo cute and gentle. Will update the review once I finish the other LIs. What I loved: + Great writing and heart-warming plot. + A variety cast of love interests, with different personalities and well... 'ethnicities (?)'. As far as I read, each boy is lovable and unique on his own merits. + The interactions between 'me' and LIs are very natural and flow well. Nothing is forced, rushed, or out of place. This is rare for a shorter otome. + A very cute epilogue! + I love love the background arts in this game! What I would love to see (totally understand the game will not be 'perfect' on every aspect given its scope and budget) : + A larger variety of BGM + More CGs to unlock + A bigger difference between the happy end and the neutral end All in all, Snips & Snails is defiantly worth a play! Now... just wish our lovely dev would port the DLCs to the Steam version. :P Cannot wait to have all the boys' after-story in one package.
10/10 would give Yuuto a smooch..
Super cute! I hope to see more games from these devs. Also, Yuuto >>>
Snips & Snails is an otome game centered around a college student (nameable by the player, default Lacy) in a contemporary/urban fantasy world where supernatural beings—known as "Arcane" or "Arcs"—have recently become officially known to humans and now freely intermingle after a long period of secrecy. Most of that background doesn't affect the MC much, though, with the story largely centered around her interactions with the Alatars, a family of Arcs whose sons (mage Sullivan, vampire Quinn, and incubus Yuuto) all happen to attend the same college she does. (There's also a fourth LI, Eryck, the ghost who "haunts" the Alatar residence.) Major side characters include the MC's dad and her best friend Arabella, the latter of whom also grows closer to one of the boys. The story is fairly straightforward romance, with the MC getting closer to the guy of your choice, plus a subplot involving mysterious dreams that the MC starts having. Each route has a good ending and a neutral/bad ending, as well an unlockable epilogue and bonus story. There are also optional text-only sex scenes (no explicit images, text roughly as explicit as the average print romance novel). So, let's start off with the good things: - The art is nice, especially the CG art. - There are interesting things about the setting and worldbuilding. Even though generally Snips & Snails trends much more heavily towards slice of life than fantasy, for the most part I don't really feel like the fantasy elements have been wasted (which tends to be an issue with fantasy slice of life). - The sex scenes are optional, with no game penalty for choosing not to read through them. - There are a couple other not-story-affecting choices that I appreciated having (whether or not MC is a virgin, whether or not she drinks alcohol) just for story flavor purposes. -
Thanks for making the cute vampire bi, even if it only comes up at the end of a route that's not his, and his boyfriend's identity kind of makes the plot of a third route fall apart if you think about it
Unfortunately... - The writing just isn't very good. It reads like someone's first attempt at writing a story—and if it were just that it would be a commendable attempt. But this is a commercial game; you have to pay money to play it. - The script does not appear to have been edited or proofread in any way; besides the fact that there's nobody listed as an editor or proofreader in the credits, there are frequent typos and places where characters say things that sound extremely unnatural or awkward (where it doesn't make sense for them to seem unnatural/awkward). When the writing is the primary focus of the game, it needs to be treated as such, not as an afterthought like this feels. - The sex scenes in particular are extremely awkward—not just in writing, but also in staging. Because there are no CGs there, instead you get to see the LI's half-naked sprite do absolutely nothing through the whole scene (where the text makes it clear that he's very much not doing absolutely nothing). A black screen as the background would genuinely be preferable; just having the bedroom background with no sprites would work too. - The game itself feels stiff. Sprites rarely move when it seems like they should, keeping the same expression for long periods of time. There are conversations that go on and on with none of the characters on screen moving in any way. I'm not asking for the developer to go so far as to include animations or Live2D, those absolutely aren't necessary for a good VN, but just having the sprites regularly change expression and/or move across the screen can do a lot for engagement. - The game's hero banner spoils every CG in the game (and by extension a major plot point). This is a relative nitpick, but if you're someone who doesn't like having CGs spoiled, it might be an annoyance. In all, while there is some potential here, ultimately Snips & Snails falls flat in its most important area, and thus I can't recommend it. While the visual issues are inconsequential enough that I could overlook them in a better-written game, the script would need a massive overhaul or total rewrite in order to get to a level that I could recommend spending money on it. With all that said, there is enough potential here that, with practice and editing, I could definitely see this developer release a quality VN in the future! One particular story made me cry and I saw it coming too. Great Job and love the style!
Originally played on itch, picked it up again on steam. First VN from Lacydigital, looking forward to future games.
