A review copy was provided by the developer.
🔶 Smoots Crazy Wave is a colorful arcade racing game 🔶 Nice gameplay, smooth controls and great colorful tracks. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3562515181 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3562514969 4 mains types of gamemodes : Race with items, Slalom, Battle Royale (And each race the last player is eliminated), and Time Trial. So a great gameplay, easy to control the boat, but the main problem of the game is the content, only 7 tracks, and take around 1 hour for completing the game, really too short … https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3562515707 Overall, a great arcade racing game with nice colorful tracks, but way too short (1 hour long) with only 7 tracks, only recommended on heavy sale. 💚💚💚 - Nice & smooth gameplay - Multiples gamemodes - Colorful tracks and nice level design ❌❌❌ - … But only 7 tracks - High price for this amount of content (10.79 €) - Can’t play a specific race with specific gamemodes (can only do a championship) - Lack of a career mode / thing to unlock in the game.
Smoots Crazy Wave is an arcade-style water racing game developed by Kaneda Games and published by JanduSoft, continuing the long-running Smoots franchise with a playful aquatic twist. Rather than aiming for realism or simulation-style racing, the game embraces a lighthearted approach that focuses on colorful characters, fast-paced competition, and chaotic power-up-driven gameplay. Players take control of one of the series’ cartoonish Smoot racers and compete in jet-ski style races across a variety of vibrant water tracks filled with obstacles, jumps, and shortcuts. The experience is designed to capture the spirit of classic arcade racers, emphasizing accessibility and quick bursts of fun rather than complex mechanics or technical realism. The core gameplay revolves around high-speed water races where players steer their racer through twisting courses while battling both the track and rival competitors. The controls are intentionally simple, allowing players to accelerate, steer, and use items without needing to master complicated driving mechanics. Because the game takes place on water, the racing physics include sliding and wave movement that create a slightly looser sense of control compared to traditional kart racers. This adds an extra layer of unpredictability to races, as players must carefully manage turns and avoid losing momentum while navigating tight corners and choppy water surfaces. Power-ups play an important role in shaping each race. Scattered throughout the tracks are item pickups that grant players various abilities designed to disrupt opponents or provide temporary advantages. Some items can be fired forward to slow down rivals ahead, while others can be dropped behind the racer as traps for pursuing competitors. These mechanics create the kind of chaotic and often humorous moments that define many arcade racing games. A player who is falling behind can quickly return to the front with the right item, ensuring that races remain competitive until the very last moments. The game offers several different modes that expand beyond simple circuit racing. In Slalom mode, players must navigate through a sequence of gates placed across the water while maintaining speed and precision. Time Trial mode challenges players to complete tracks as quickly as possible, rewarding mastery of racing lines and shortcuts. One of the more interesting variations is the elimination-style mode where racers are gradually removed from the competition after each lap, leaving only the strongest competitor at the end. These additional modes provide some variety and allow players to approach the tracks from different perspectives. Character selection also adds a modest layer of strategy. The game includes a roster of fourteen Smoot racers, each with slightly different statistics such as acceleration, top speed, and handling. Some racers are better suited for quick bursts of speed, while others handle turns more effectively. Although the differences are not drastic, they encourage players to experiment with different characters to find the one that best suits their preferred racing style. The tracks themselves are colorful and imaginative, featuring environments such as tropical islands, icy landscapes, and ancient ruins surrounded by water. Each location is filled with visual details that make the races feel lively and energetic. Some courses include hidden shortcuts or alternate routes that reward players who learn the layout of the track. Environmental hazards like floating obstacles, narrow channels, and sudden turns add challenge and force players to stay alert while maintaining high speed. One of the strongest aspects of Smoots Crazy Wave is its emphasis on local multiplayer. The game supports split-screen racing for up to four players, making it an ideal choice for couch multiplayer sessions. Racing against friends adds an extra layer of excitement, as the unpredictable nature of power-ups and close finishes often leads to intense and humorous moments. The game’s simple controls make it easy for new players to join in quickly, which helps maintain a party-friendly atmosphere. Visually, the game adopts a bright and cheerful cartoon style that fits perfectly with the Smoots universe. Characters are exaggerated and playful in design, while the environments are filled with vivid colors and animated details. The overall presentation is polished enough to keep the races visually engaging, even though the graphical technology itself is relatively simple. The soundtrack features upbeat music that complements the energetic pace of the races, reinforcing the arcade-like feel of the gameplay. Despite its charm, the game does have a few limitations. The racing mechanics remain fairly basic, and players looking for deeper customization or advanced driving techniques may find the gameplay somewhat shallow. Some collisions with walls or obstacles can also feel abrupt, occasionally disrupting the flow of a race. Additionally, the single-player experience can become repetitive after extended play sessions, as the core gameplay loop changes very little throughout the various modes. Nevertheless, Smoots Crazy Wave succeeds in delivering exactly the kind of experience it aims to provide: a fast, colorful, and accessible arcade racing game that shines brightest in multiplayer settings. Its simple mechanics, lively tracks, and chaotic item system make it a fun choice for casual racing fans or groups of friends looking for an entertaining party game. While it may not compete with larger racing franchises in terms of depth or innovation, it still captures the carefree excitement that defines classic arcade racers. Rating: 6/10
