sucks. Visibility of player and space: Sucks. Impenetrable shields: Sucks. Enemies spawning out of nowhere: Sucks. nonsencical cutscenes with no relation to the game: Sucks. Poor dialogue visualization and inability to recall the conversations so you find out what the hell is going on: sucks. Main character (you) is imbecile, no matter what you want or do. Sucks. It sucks being Russian.
Not bad, but shortly game.
I really wanted to like this game. Hell, I even pledged for it on Gamefound when it was first announced - although I admit, I was mostly doing that for the Tabletop RPG SlavicPunk: Oldtimer is an isometric shooter with some good ideas in it that is weighed down by several glaring problems: Annoying encounter design - there are essentially 6 enemy types (at least in as far as I got), 3 of whom are supremely annoying to fight. Turrets are ridiculously strong - you can't even properly get into range with your guns before you're torn to shreds. The 2 types of shield guys are just as bad, but in different ways - there is only one response: hack to stun, run behind them and shoot. That is assuming the game doesn't decide that the stunned enemy should still be able to turn to face you with their shield. Boring Weapons - the guns lack impact and don't feel particularly good to shoot. I ended up using the shotgun almost exclusively because it was the closest to actually impactful. Obtuse progression - you can buy upgrades for your guns. At least in theory. Assuming you figure out how much money you have and where you are getting it from and then find the one store that is in no way sign posted and then also find a random, barely distingushable "workbench" to add those upgrades to your guns. Mediocre story and awful VA - the story is pretty standard. Old private eye with a drug addiction roped into a shady job. This would be fine, if the writing wasn't trying to be so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ edgy all the time. But to add onto that, the voice acting is atrocious - I ended up muting the game in cutscenes at some point. Sluggish gameplay - you turn really slow on a controller and upping that in the settings seems to do nothing. Enemies are either one-taps or bulletsponges. All the added details in the maps are just there to block your (and only your - turrets will hit you through a car) shots and get in the way of movement. The dodge seems to do nothing and the amount of "stay in the zone to download data" type objectives I had got old real fast. There are a few good things though: the atmosphere is really good - they really managed to capture this extrapolation of Soviet -> Modern Russia -> Cyberpunk Russia. I actually liked the hacking - it's not deep, but it gives a little bit of something else to do and decisions to make in combat. Also the lockpicking and power generator mini-games were suprisingly nice - they hit a good balance of short enough to not be annoying, but difficult enough to engage a few neurons. If you have any interest in TTRPGs, I highly suggest picking up "Sibirpunk". It's made by the same guys, set in the same world and is an absolute treat! How they managed to make a TTRPG that good and a video game this bad I'll never know. Don't recommend.
I try not to be negative, but there are few points that make me sad: *Enemies spawn from the air, the same attitude to civilian NPC, they run and then disappear in air *During the hacking only, good moments are this circle thing, the guard-checkpoint is a joke, you can leave 1 enemy with melee, run around any. New one will not spawn and you can beat a timer (attached video below) https://youtu.be/G2_Jzo-o9eQ?si=lHi8f0vzpHQbaida *D### dream is weird, but ok, too blurry at some points. *Where are grenades/Molotov’s/emp etc.? Grenade launcher? *I respect melee-kill animation during the time outside of conflict zones, but why not in real combat situations, I want to cut clear some parts – no, enemy on high alert all time. *Is final boss should make me scared? Could better give her some gun. Or helicopter support? *Weapon swapping animation freeze, can’t change, need to restart level. Happened 5 times. *Why I felled under the map? I could walk, inject adrenaline, shoot. But had to restart – happened 3 times *? For what reason I need to buy lvl1/2 weapon upgrade, if I can jump to lvl3 skipping it and its enough firepower? *Cars don’t explode? + *I liked a moment with police break-in in a drug-lab, 100% copy of the scene from Grand Theft Auto San Andreas End of The Line, only with a better swat-team. *Turrets are nice! *Visual on a streets is more or less ok. However..here’s some gameplay on High settings on Steam Deck 256 GB LCD with 32 fps verage https://youtu.be/1H5tvEjftQc?si=EnNvi8IDxLU9Q2ia
Man this game needed a bit more polish before coming out because the DNA of very good is there, just sucks that there are issues. I liked how the setting is basically Warsaw (Mokotow Apartments lol) and a lot of polish jokes but why Endg dub? it's Slavic, not western. Shotgun and AR are awesome to play with but I see no reason for railgun and smg if dmg upgrade level 2 and inciendary ammo level 2 carry the game and there is no reason to use them. The city feels very empty and it counts as levels when traversing through it, I think side missions would have improved the barren feel of it. Enemies charging to their deaths and if they are too close prevent from shooting is annoying af. They also spawn before Janusz's eyes which leads to annoying hits being taken when trying to reposition. The enemy hacking could have been improved by turning enemies into allies like with the turrets, the most dangerous enemy in the game Why only one boss? Why is there no lore compedium in this game? Shut out to the composers, they've done amazing job I think if Red Squares played more Ruiner they would have made a really cool indie game. If there is a sequel I'll likely going to buy it.
