Singled Out

[h1]Judge, Jury, & Executioner [/h1] Singled Out is a casual identification game developed by Matt Glanville. This was originally developed for a game jam, and was later expanded into the version that’s now on Steam. In Singled Out, you’re given three characteristics and you have to find the on-screen character that has all three (the galactic criminal) so you can pop them and make the galaxy a better place. Each time you clear a level, you’re given a more difficult level with a slightly longer time-limit. [h1]Positives: [/h1] [list][*]The art style is fairly simple pixel art but it’s well-made and actually being a little simpler for an identification game is beneficial. [*]The gameplay is enjoyable. As I mentioned you’re given three different characteristics (which can be type of hat, type of eyes, type of mouth etc.) and you have to find the character that matches so you can shoot them. Initially it’s pretty straightforward, but as you get further it gets pretty frantic as your eyes dart back and forth between the characters and the characteristics. I had fun. [*]The difficulty ramps up nicely while also giving you some extra time each level, so it never feels overwhelming. Though, the longer you take for each level the less points you earn for it. [*]It does actually have an end point, so there is something to work towards which is nice. This is a tough game and the fact that there’s an actual end makes me more interested in coming back and trying again compared to an endless game. [*]There are leaderboards, pretty essential for any arcade-y games. [/list] [h1]Neutral: [/h1] [list][*]Don’t go into this expecting to be engaged for hours at a time, this is more of a coffee break type game unless you’re really determined to get a new high score or something. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with this, especially considering it’s only $2, I just wanted to mention it. [/list] [h1]Negatives: [/h1] [list][*]The only issue I had with it was that sometimes that type of hat on a character partially obscured the body type they had, making it a little more difficult to tell which character was the right one. It didn’t happen often enough to ruin the game or anything, but it was a tad frustrating. [/list] [h1]Verdict: [/h1] A little coffee break game for less than the price of a coffee, Singled Out offers a good challenge with enjoyable gameplay. It won’t keep you entertained for hours on end, but it doesn’t need to. If you’re a fan of the arcade genre this is certainly worth looking at.
