honestly this game is just outright marvelous. there is a pretty sharp learning curve at the start, but once you get a hold of the basics you start to make some really cool transport systems. - what i personally made as soon as i started my second save file (after the first one being more of a crash test file so i could learn the game, which ended in me being over 1 million in debt lmao) i found a decently-sized city and set myself a goal: build the ultimate high-speed service. i made a HSL station with some express and regional tracks on the side (just in case), and first off made a regional two-stop service to a small town just east of the city. then i planned for the high speed tracks to go in the middle so it would do a setup like this: regional platform, high speed track, high speed track, regional platform then i planned another high speed line to two other cities off to the north, we'll get to those two later. just after those two i had another plan for that high speed line that went east. i decided i would make it go to the city on the other side of the map, which is the largest city in the entire map, and in the middle it would branch off to the city on the southernmost point of the map. i also made a tram system in that city that led to a small town just beside it. after that i completed the high speed line to the southern city and prepared the route to the western capital. next up, i got to work on the second and third high speed lines, the third of which would have its route all prepared for completion before the second's completion. then i did some fixes on the tracks like fixing absent links, applying railway signals and calibrating them, and electrifying everything so i could use electric trains such as the TGV (Spike Duplex, Atlantique, 4400 (POS), La Poste, and Haru PSE (Korail KTX-I?) variants exist in this game). i also used electrification on the regional train and used the British Rail Class 390 (ingame name is not the same) to serve the stops. oh, and about those two cities served by the second high speed line, i linked both of them to each other and to the station that serves them both, using a highly (not really because me still in mass deficit lmao) sophisticated tram system. currently i have completed the first and second high speed lines, along with shuttles that link cities from their city hall to their respective station - what am i working on right now let's see... the second high speed line is most definitely going to have a branch to another big city in the northeast, the first high speed line should soon be able to serve the western capital... ah yes, i'm also planning on starting a full-on freight system throughout the map. along with a bunch of other stuff lmao final verdict: absolute marvel of game design and gameplay, could use some improvements but it's already super good without em!!!

not as fun as it looks. and is quite complicated from when i first started.
You need to get the hang of it - a bit. After that, forget other hobbies. This game scratches your itch, if you love to plan, implement and improve vast networks, except of course you are one of the other guys (OpenTTD). Graphics and controls are a bit rough, depending on the "pakset". I'd recommend PAK128 German for my fellow germans, but as far as i know the original Pak 64 should do the trick for everyone who is not that interested in german trains or one of the other - most beautiful - paksets. I recommend it whole-heartedly for a specific group of players.
Despite looking similar and both being about transport, this game is basically the complete opposite in complexity and is clearly made for players who want real control and deep simulation. It does not hold your hand at all and can be rough at first, and if you have a bit of patience and actually read and learn how it works, it becomes genuinely fun and rewarding. It is an old-school FOSS game with tons of passion behind it, a steep learning curve like Factorio, and if you really care, you can even jump in, give feedback, or contribute to making it better yourself.

Pakset
経営ゲーとしてプレイするならばPak128やPak128.German、Pak128.Britainが無難です。

This review is for the Simutrans Extended version of the game, which is also free. I will add a guide to how to play that on steam at the end of this review. The standard version is great, but if you want really immersive passenger transport, then - well that is just one of the aspects of the extended that is... extended... I love this game. It has been my favourite game of this type over many years, maybe 20+. I don't play it so much these days - I just don't have the time, and my concentration is not what it was. If you have lots of time and want to play a game like this with a LOT of depth, then - well you have to try it and learn it. It will reward. It is still being improved and bugfixed, and the community which develops, plays and supports the game is committed and very friendly. Simutrans extended is by far for me the best way to play simutrans. It really maximises all the reasons why simutrans is above other transport/logistics sims, like TTD and even up there with modern behemoths like Workers & Resourses Soviet Republic. However, it didn't work out of the box in steam for me. The non-steam releases from the game site are free and work just fine, but if you want to have it in your steam library then here is a quick guide to how I run Simutrans Extended in steam. Download the zip for windows 64 from the forums: https://forum.simutrans.com/index.php?topic=16703.0 This zip contains both the windows and linux executables, and paksets. (at time of writing this) Unzip it somewhere. locate either "Simutrans-Extended.exe" (windows) or "simutrans-extended" (linux) in this folder, the complete path to this file is needed. in the launch options for simutrans in steam put: "replace this with path to executable in quotes" %command% ...And this is what worked for me. Hope this helps.
There is no explanation, no kind of tutorial, at least not that i could find. Everything is there but it´s unclear what to even do. Menues are PLENTY but nothing about this thing is Userfriendly AT ALL
